In this Timex Galli S1 38mm review video, I analyse the fatally flawed rerelease of this special watch designed by Giorgio Galli.

Amateur watch repairer here: it's most likely a bezel release (that being said, the finish does look a bit iffy). On most watches, you pop the back off and the movement will fall out the back. On some watches, you have to remove the bezel to get the movement out of the front.
@MrMadvillan
2 жыл бұрын
It’s unfortunate because it’s a detail that’s in line with the vintage aesthetic and has been very common since the advent of the watch bezel. Most dive bezels also have a notch for the same purpose but are less noticeable. I bet who ever pressed the bezel on had to do it twice, as the marring suggests a downward pry as you would to remove the bezel. All of my vintage pieces have the same mark. It’s simply a misunderstanding compounded by poor costumer service.
@Andrew.W75

It look like a release cut out for the bezel, some of my vintage pieces have these, although they are more common with a front loading movement
@sleepinglysithia

I had a watch in the past that was front loaded. It had a notch like this. To get access to the dial or to remove the movement from the case you’d use a case back knife in the groove and pop off the bezel. The crystal came out with the bezel. The watch still had a case back but the movement and dial could not come out the back. I wonder if that is what Timex were doing here?
@hairypieempire

It's definitely for removing the bezel. Panerai have the same slit for removing the bezel but it is a lot slimmer and cleaner in execution and its on the side by the 10 o'clock so it's barely noticeable than if it was positioned between the lugs.
That customer service is totally unacceptable. It will always make me think twice about buying a Timex now.

I just received the grey dial version. There isn't any hole or even slight indentation on mine, so perhaps they tweaked the design. Really a beautiful watch.
Well, it looks like Timex sent a watch with a flaw to the WRONG GUY! LOL I'm really loving this piece and I'm hoping yours really does have a manufacturing flaw rather than a design flaw. I'm really hoping to find out more about these watches.
I have that hole too but mine is wayyyy more subtle than what you showed in the video. It's only a cut-out on the top piece while the lip of the bottom piece remains sharp. I didn't even notice this feature until I saw this video. I love everything about this watch except the strap that came with it.
This video highlights my main gripe with Timex. They charge high prices for sub-standard QA and materials. I think Timex's resurgence over the past few years due to releasing their Q-line and Marlin line has convinced Timex they can coast on the first appearance of their watches instead of focusing on a long-lasting appeal that will get a wearer to keep pulling out a Timex from their watch box.
@thomasmathes5019

The Q's movment is garbage, I sent mine back within an hour after receiving it. The movement was impossible to set properly, the minute hand would jump forward or backward when you pushed in the crown randomly. Users on watch forums griped about it. But their standard fare quartz watches on the otherhand have always been quite nicely made for the price. I bought a Expedition North recently and was quite impressed with the overall quality, even the leather strap.
That gap on the bezel is to aid in separating it from the case if it needs to be disassembled. Similar to the lip on a pressed on caseback.
@zoltandiveki5233

Indeed. My MIDO commander has one too, albeit not as prominent as this on the Timex
That hole isn't a mistake or any QC issues. As some already stated, it's a cutout for easier possible removal of the bezel with the crystal. There are other watches that feature it too, for eample my Studio Underd0g Watermelon has it to...

@@seybertooth9282 That's right, but there must be other reasons for this with certain case constructions, I think (cost measures one of them, for sure). There's also a reason why this crevice is located at the 12 o'clock position: the wearer just doesn't look there much often ;-) I didn't notice this on my Underd0g until a few weeks ago...
@MrMadvillan

@@seybertooth9282 Not really. its the only way to design for a top loaded crystal or a one piece or monocoque case. You’re not going to push a domed crystal through the back of the case. You could do without the notch but come time to change the crystal and you end up making a notch anyhow. either way, it’s extremely common in vintage watches.

Maybe, but there appears to be abrasion ("botched rough edges") at that point.
@MrMadvillan
2 жыл бұрын
@@seanferguson5460 3:31 you’re right on that. my guess is that the bezel was installed incorrectly or it didn’t seat properly and it had to be popped off again. there’s a gasket or tension ring holding the crystal and they can throw off the bezel if not seated. it’s unfortunate, but also a reminder that these are cased by hand.
I’m presently looking for one of these to add to my collection. I’m surprised to hear that rotor wobble/noise is an issue. I’ve noticed it in the 8000 series Miyota’s but never in the 9000 series movements of which I have many. Thanks for the great review Ben!
I have owned this exact same model and color Timex Galli S1 watch for 2 months. I've enjoyed the watch and was impressed with its looks. After viewing this video, I decided to examine my watch. Surprise! My watch has a similar detent in the bezel ring in the same location on the 12 o'clock side. However *the detent on my watch is so thin as to be extremely difficult to see*. Without watching your review video, I would have never noticed it. It appears to look more like a trick of light or shadow on my watch. My watch has no witness marking or distortion to the flatness as appears on your lower case. Had you reviewed my watch as your example, I don't believe you would have noticed the detent.

Shame about the shitty customer service. You'd expect better from a company that's obviously trying to position themselves in Seiko/Orient territory. It's inexcusable, as I've had a couple of issues with $40 Casios and they've replaced the watches no questions asked and haven't even wanted the faulty one back.

Sorry,, but a Timex for that price? It had to go wrong! It´s just not their league. The so called "customer service" is phenomenal indeed. I wanted to have a manual for one of my Timex...I am now waiting for ONE YEAR!!! Btw: Great vid, thanks for that!
Looks like it's got a snap-on bezel, and the 'cutaway lip' is to aid the use of a penknife. This feature was quite common back in the day. With a rubber 'O' ring this shouldn't compromise the water resistance at 50m.

Reviewer should have known this. So long.
The gap is there to help insert a tool-knife used to pray up to top ring of the bezel. It's intentional. This kind of thing is quite common. However if there are dents or scratches there you can assume that your watch has already been opened by a person without a real clue what he is doing.
Timex's sweet spot seems to be the Waterbury line.. $50-$80 range.. below that you get some real junkie pieces. And above that the value seems to drop way off for what you pay. Their higher end stuff, the Marlin line for example.. 30mm water resistance, acrylic crystal, cheap straps, for $250... Insultingly poor value. Their Navi XL's are a real banger though.
I love this watch, particularly the green dial, but it doesn't seem to be on their website for some odd reason.
That Titanic gash you refer to is almost certainly a watchmaker's access point and looks to me as though they noticed dust under the dial and had to remove the bezel to remove the alleged dust (in a panic?) hence the damage..........................

Orient used to have a 37.5mm handwound dress watch in their Orient Star range up until about 2016. It’s virtually impossible to find now.
That hole on the side is there to get bezel and christal open. It was a usual functional design on a lot of 60s Grand and King Seiko watches. I dont mind it at all exept the scratches ot comes around it free of charge. But boy o boy what a great design of the case! It is totally alike AP code 11
What are your thoughts on the Waterbury?
Could you review the LCA reissue please
I feel like they completely discontinued the larger sized model. I’ve been wanting the 41mm blue but I haven’t seen it for sale.
It's looking like watch manufacturers are bringing mechanical watches back into fashion (if that's the right word) or perhaps it's because people are getting fed up with replacing batteries every couple of years or less. I'm a lady with an abnormally slim wrist wearing a mechanical/auto skeleton watch (it's a ladies one but the dial is 36mm) and, despite it being large, it really looks good on my wrist. I love it. My son bought it for me as an early Mother's Day present 😁
I have the blue dial and it also has this 'crevice' although on mine it looks intentional and finished well, no rough edges. So this may be part of the design or due to manufacturing.

Based on what I've seen on KZread, Timex is a brand we all love to hate. Not to say Seiko is any better lately for what they are doing, gouging customers. Instead of developing new premium models, they retired the "old" and re-issue as "new" with not much more than a higher price. They are too busy taking money than looking after customers. They have too many to spend time caring.

Hi . Please tell me your opinion on indian watch making company. Titan watchs
Wow what a lovely design 🤩
Sorry to disappoint you, but that case architecture and fabrication was created years ago, not by Gali (Timex), but by Invicta... For which they won a Red Dot award and introduced at Basel (Baselworld)
The slice on the top ring at 12 is made to fit a watchmakers knive to remove the crystal assembly.... standard industry practice, they could of slimmed it down a bit though and not make it so apparent.
If I had a major QC issue, my first contact would be the retailer, even if gray market. I probably wouldn't expect great response from Casio or Seiko either.
The protracted resolution is the reason I won't risk buying a Timex. Too little, too late, Timex. I was sooo close to buying a Waterbury GMT. Such a shame.
Do you have relatively small wrists? I have good sized hands and big wrists so a small watch looks really weird on me.
