It’s upsetting for the consumer, but for long term sake it is quite beneficial. The more we are encouraged to stray from goods that are environmentally unsustainable, the more action and research goes into making goods that are both ideal to consumers and environmentally sustainable (ideally).

It is. I suppose the goal is to further make people stray from unsustainable meat practices through higher prices. It would be best to offer government incentives to big companies to involve environmentally sustainable practices at the same time in my opinion…To mitigate consumer costs. Although I’m personally unbothered by meat/milk prices (I’m going vegan), many people regularly want to have meat for cultural dishes.

@@rairotaichou1861 no I get that, but in the grand scheme of things would you rather have carbon produced through cow farts or through the tailpipe of a car. I’m not for banning cars either but it just seems obvious it’s a lot more natural than cars. And a lot of the agricultural emissions come from the change in land use aswell as transportation and processing of other things such as grain. Cows alone only makeup 17% of agricultural emissions. (Granted a larger portion than many other options, but still minuscule considering butchering a cow has a-lot less emissions compared to a huge factory processing grains for pasta, or feilds being torn apart to flood for rice, creating the same methane gas from decomposing plants in the dirt. We can go neck and neck over what’s more important but jacking up the prices on food doesn’t seem to be the right way imo. Some things that could be banned or heavily taxed that would make more sense could be cruise ships as they produce >3x the amount of greenhouse gasses than all the cars in the cities they visit. For example a cruise taking place to Mexico would pump out more emissions in a day than every car in a major city of Mexico would in several weeks. Just seems dumb that that’s a complete luxury that people can afford to pay more to use, when compared to food which many people can barely afford to pay for now.

It'll just mean that individual non-big non-multinational corporate ranchers either have to fold, or move out if they can't keep up with the tax. Guess what takes their place instead? The big multinational ones, and the price of that tax is where the consumer is going to foot the bill. Passing the buck, charging the bill. Old hat strategies since even before the British EIC and the Dutch VoC.

Higher prices dissuade the consumer from purchasing cow products. Since the profit margin is lower, farmers are encouraged to use other livestock, like chicken, which produce only about 1/5th to 1/10th the carbon footprint of cows per kilogram and almost no methane. The funds could also go to tech industries, green infrastructure, public services, science grants, etc. Taxes are very effective at changing behavior.

I can't imagine paying that much per head of cattle for a "fart tax," but I do know one thing for sure. Denmark is about to lose access to its beef market if this goes through. You can only push farmers so far before they just shut down. It's a hard enough job as it is.

The goal should be to reduce taxes as much as possible. Not create new reasons to tax people. This is why I hate governments. They have no idea when to stop.
