They Animated Trombone Correctly!?

Музыка

This video brought me back to all the wonderful lessons I had with Andre Hayward at UT Austin :).
KZread determined this video to be endangerment to children, so if the comments are disabled that would be why. A confusing decision to say the least, considering other similar videos with way more views have comments enabled and are not considered to be endangering children?
Thank you Pixar at Disney and the Animators behind the movie "Soul". They actually went out of their way to hire Andy Martin to play trombone and animate everything correctly... more or less. Still a couple of very nitpicky discrepancies but I guess we can let it slide... Get it? Especially since I missed a couple of small details myself, but I blame the faulty transciption I was reading because I don't like taking responsiblity for my own actions.

Yeah .... They did not do motion capture. Or tracking. I am a 3D animator(don't bother looking at my KZread channel everything is private). Pixar doesn't do motion capture. What they do is referencing someone from multiple angles. If you are a animator with previous experience with an instrument the better, but if not you still study the movements you put the keyframes copping the timing of the reference, then you look at the arches you can exagerate, then add anticipations, the correct ease in, ease outs and that's it. You adjust the curves for the automatic in-betweening that Maya makes. Its a really well though and manual and suttle exaggeration of real life, motion capture can't do that

It doesn’t surprise me that Disney is so true to detail like this. Coco’s guitar playing was accurate even to the vibration frequency of the strings. In Soul they actually mapped out the movement of the tendons in John Baptiste’s (the musician who did most of the music in Soul) hands as he played piano so they could make sure it looked right animated onscreen. For all its faults, Disney sure puts in the work for the important details in a story.

I was the only tenor sax in band until I taught my friend to play it so she switched from clarinet. No instrument is masculine or feminine. True, most of our brass were boys but many of them were friends before band who wanted to hang out. The most notable trombone we had in middle school became a drummer in high school and was even better (he switched because of his friends being in percussion.) I think of him almost every time I see a trombone though. He only had a finger (technically two fused on one side) and a thumb on each hand and knowing he could play an instrument or two at such a young age for me really showed me how inclusive music can really be. It also cemented the reality of if someone really wants to accomplish something, nothing will stand in the way as long as the person themselves believes they can. Don't give up your instrument because you are worried about what it implies. Love the experience and if another instrument catches your eye, feel free to try it. I took piano lessons in elementary before I played tenor and when I stopped the latter, it was because I had no soul; I am a technical player, which doesn't work well with jazz.

Pete Docter was very particular about getting Soul's musical scenes accurately, so they actually tracked jazz musicians and used it to animate the characters, and Jon Batiste, who wrote original compositions on the piano, actually played full sessions for their reference. It's remarkable the amount of effort they put into it really.

In the last clip you can really see how the rigging just follows the position of the grip instead of being a good arm movement. It's a lot of work to do both realism and avoiding the uncanny valley. They had a fantastic focus on the important part. To explain the animation. You give models a skeleton of ridged, not bendy, parts that deform at the joints. Then you basically tell a joint to move to a specific position in specific time. You can tweak the speed and these animations have a lot of work, especially in the face to deform naturally. That effort making the face and all is so immense that doing it right on the limbs with cloth animation is just way too high of a scope.
