KZread determined this video to be endangerment to children, so if the comments are disabled that would be why. A confusing decision to say the least, considering other similar videos with way more views have comments enabled and are not considered to be endangering children?
Thank you Pixar at Disney and the Animators behind the movie "Soul". They actually went out of their way to hire Andy Martin to play trombone and animate everything correctly... more or less. Still a couple of very nitpicky discrepancies but I guess we can let it slide... Get it? Especially since I missed a couple of small details myself, but I blame the faulty transciption I was reading because I don't like taking responsiblity for my own actions.

Yeah .... They did not do motion capture. Or tracking. I am a 3D animator(don't bother looking at my KZread channel everything is private). Pixar doesn't do motion capture. What they do is referencing someone from multiple angles. If you are a animator with previous experience with an instrument the better, but if not you still study the movements you put the keyframes copping the timing of the reference, then you look at the arches you can exagerate, then add anticipations, the correct ease in, ease outs and that's it. You adjust the curves for the automatic in-betweening that Maya makes. Its a really well though and manual and suttle exaggeration of real life, motion capture can't do that

I really love the detail of the trombone case. I know it’s simple, and sounds kinda silly, but its like the same case that I used to see everywhere in my middle school band hall and its super nostalgic for me
It doesn’t surprise me that Disney is so true to detail like this. Coco’s guitar playing was accurate even to the vibration frequency of the strings. In Soul they actually mapped out the movement of the tendons in John Baptiste’s (the musician who did most of the music in Soul) hands as he played piano so they could make sure it looked right animated onscreen. For all its faults, Disney sure puts in the work for the important details in a story.

I was the only tenor sax in band until I taught my friend to play it so she switched from clarinet. No instrument is masculine or feminine. True, most of our brass were boys but many of them were friends before band who wanted to hang out. The most notable trombone we had in middle school became a drummer in high school and was even better (he switched because of his friends being in percussion.) I think of him almost every time I see a trombone though. He only had a finger (technically two fused on one side) and a thumb on each hand and knowing he could play an instrument or two at such a young age for me really showed me how inclusive music can really be. It also cemented the reality of if someone really wants to accomplish something, nothing will stand in the way as long as the person themselves believes they can. Don't give up your instrument because you are worried about what it implies. Love the experience and if another instrument catches your eye, feel free to try it. I took piano lessons in elementary before I played tenor and when I stopped the latter, it was because I had no soul; I am a technical player, which doesn't work well with jazz.

Yes. The animation and the movements match perfectly. Thank you very much for sharing. Guess who is going to watch this movie within some minutes. 🤟🏼😁
He's so good doing the trumpet! Keep up the great work!!
Pete Docter was very particular about getting Soul's musical scenes accurately, so they actually tracked jazz musicians and used it to animate the characters, and Jon Batiste, who wrote original compositions on the piano, actually played full sessions for their reference. It's remarkable the amount of effort they put into it really.
This makes me super happy. Much respect to pixar!!
Pixar was always really good about making sure the sounds, visuals & movements of everything they did were accurate to an incredible depth- the sound of an instrument being no exception. Of course this is so spot on. ❤
Brilliant. Good work to the animation team.
In animation we don't animate based on nothing, we always use reference. In a film environment like this for anything technically complicated we get people in and film high quality reference. For speaking / moving we usually film ourselves and use this as reference.
The girl who voiced Connie goes to my middle school!! She’s actually super nice and was ‘discovered’ at a school play.

In the last clip you can really see how the rigging just follows the position of the grip instead of being a good arm movement. It's a lot of work to do both realism and avoiding the uncanny valley. They had a fantastic focus on the important part. To explain the animation. You give models a skeleton of ridged, not bendy, parts that deform at the joints. Then you basically tell a joint to move to a specific position in specific time. You can tweak the speed and these animations have a lot of work, especially in the face to deform naturally. That effort making the face and all is so immense that doing it right on the limbs with cloth animation is just way too high of a scope.
Truly one of the last greats for Pixar ❤
my dad knows the guy who played double bass for souls and they filmed him as well during recording so they could copy his movements exactly. that's what they did for all the instruments

As a former trombone player (not professional just for school), I’m glad that they were accurate with how fast the characters arm was moving since you would realistically have to do that to quickly change notes, especially when going from B/F to E, D, or C
She stands up when she gets lost in the music. Such an amazing detail :D
I used to play in my school band. Started in 6th grade. Left after sophomore year. Now that I'm a senior, thinking of bigger and better things, I realise I would give anything just to play with that group again. Trombone was never my favourite to listen to but I'm so glad I picked it up. I never knew they were the best years I could ever have.
I am glad they did all the instruments accurate. They love music.
Pixar animators spent weeks filming at Berkeley college to get all fingerings and slide positions accurate
Wow this makes me wanna bust out my old trombone again! I haven't played that thing in years but I used to love just playing around to see what sounded cool
I love Soul and I hope they make a sequel
That’s the crazy thing with soul, everything, even during Joe Gardner’s “zone” improvisation, was animated perfectly down to the frame.
A movie about music can’t be wrong about how instruments work
So nice to see some actually good animation to match the music on my instrument
I love this as a child trombonist this will keep me motivated when I feel like quitting 😊❤
The hardest part of playing the trombone is not the articulation… *it’s reaching to the 7th position on the slide perfectly*
*I saw a behind the scenes clips about Soul. No tracking was used. They just studied musicians very carefully, in order to animate the characters. 🥰❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️*
great movie. those two scenes brought me back to wanting to play tbone again. just nice!!
I never thought I'd see the day an instrument was animated correctly ❤❤❤
They animated the trombone correctly but you are not supposed to puff your cheeks.

Tbf, the character is like 12 years old. It could have been intended to show that while she's good, she's still learning and her technique still needs work.

@@BambiTrout yeah that's true bro
Pixar has always been obsessed with getting little details right. I remember holly hunter spent 3 months learning military pilot lingo so she could use accurate terminology during the plane crash/SOS scene
I can’t beleive you can just mimic it like that! Cool man
I knew why something just felt right when I saw the instruments being played throughout the movie! There's so much attention to detail
i loved the music-centered parts of this movie, and really all of the segments in real life. the animation, emotions and storytelling were just on point! but the soul world bored me so much :(

Yeah the "real life" world is more interesting than the soul world
Trombones are the one instrument I would expect animators to get right
As a beginner trombonist, I am glad that the animators took the time to see how to put together a trombone, what the case looks like (on the outside) and how you play it.
The video description is just pure *Gold*
On faster passages the animation lags behind, but ti still gets there. Better than 99% of musical animation.
The amount of work people put in from animation to editing, sound department Is LAUDABLE
OK I love this movie I watched it twice and cried both times and this is amazing thank you
I was a first chair trombone, and seeing this just fills me with so much joy! Makes me miss those days.
That's what sets apart Pixar from illumination (besides Pixar having actually great stories with an animation quality that improves on itself): they do care enough about what they are telling to actually do their research.
I've always wondered how you get to decide which notes to play when recreating a passage that they get wrong since only the position is clear and several notes can be selected on each position I know there are less notes available in the very low register but if it's mid or upper then what's the criteria?
Man this made me remember about trombone-drum vs violin animation fighting over a coin.
I am glad that they finally animated whatever instruments in this movie :)
I know it’s not the same movie, but in the Bonus videos of Coco, they showed how they animated the guitar playing scenes by copying the musicians!

It’s a technique called rotoscoping. When done right, it can make musical scenes look incredible. There’s this anime called Kids on the Slope that does rotoscoping, and the animation on the instruments is fantastic.

@@Caddynars i didn’t know that! Thanks for the info.
The only thing that’s wrong for the Thromebone is that your cheeks can’t be puffy

Unless you're circular breathing, but yeah, she doesn't really look to be doing that though
As a trombone player I love that Pixar showed how amazing and wonderful the trombone sounds, it really is a beautiful instrument when you play it right.
They put so much effort into soul making it amazing 👏👏👏👏
The fact that 99% of people just think you suck/are annoying/being weird is also accurate for musicians. Music is only appreciated when it's listened to. Sometimes it's like shoving paintings infront of blind people.

Most people do not care that much about music. Just singing and poetry.
I swear the 2nd one beginning sounds like the burning memory song
I'm not surprised that they would animate it well, this is the animation studio that dressed up one of their coworkers in a chef suit and threw him in a pool just to learn how to animate wet clothes for Linguini in Ratatouille. Pixar is in a league of its own when it comes to this kinda stuff. As a guitarist, they did a fantastic job animating Coco's guitar playing too! Lovely playing too!
It's pretty amazing how someone can play the trombone for real, then someone copy the movements into an animation. It really does put me in a state of awe. Especially with the tech we have these days like mocap and mocap suits...even them little green dots blow my mind every time! 😂🤣😭
