My bettas have adored my red cherry shrimp. They watch the shrimp antics, but don't eat them. Bettas are the most intelligent fish (OK, that's not saying a lot) and they like the diversion. Occasionally, a larger shrimp will decide to "face off" with a beta, and the fish just stares like "I can squash you like the bug you are." Can fish laugh?

Oh you’re so lucky! I named my beta grinch as he has killed everything I tried having with him except for my snails! He made me want to upgrade his tank to a planted tank because he was nipping his fins. I said you know what your tank is plain and boring and I went all out. I am learning along the way with plants and now all of a sudden earlier this week I found isopods and such in my tank and first thing KZread said is it’s a sign my tank is doing great. I am so thrilled about this and my betas tail grew back nicely and doing amazing now. And now I’m just starting up a 20 gal and looking for micro fish ideas and just fill it up with a heavily planted nice piece of wood decor and just enjoy the tank.

While these fish can go in smaller tanks, I highly recommend a 40 breeder with small fish for anyone with the space. It's not necessary for sure, but they are a relatively affordable tank that anyone can get into, while at the same time, having lots of space when stocked with small fish. I've got a densely planted 40B with loads of yellow tiger endlers, blue dream neocaridina, three reticulated hillstream loaches, otocinclus, orange rams horn snails, and Malaysian trumpet snails. It's such a wonderful tank! Always something to look at, and tons of life and activity. I filter it with a large marineland hang on back (also very affordable) that's loaded with sponge and ceramic bio media and has a large prefilter sponge, all from aquarium co-op.

I hit the petstores just as they opened for the first time after being closed for a long time from the covid related city shut-down. I meant to get a few more blue neon tetras to add to my tank, but the only ones they had in stock were very small and young borderline fry. So I ended up taking home what turned out to be two mystery fish and two blue neon tetras. After they grew up I figured out that they were white cloud mountain minnows, and they have since become my favorite nanos. Their personalities are off the charts and they are just as pretty as the neon tetras.

I have a shrimp in a 10 gallon tank, black rili shrimp, and I put two mystery snails in with them. My population of shrimp has clearly been declining. I haven't seen a snail eat a shrimp, but I've talked to others who say the snails will gladly eat a molting shrimp if they happen upon them. So I would suggest two snails is too many in a 10 gallon shrimp tank, and for anything smaller than 10 gallons, I wouldn't put any snails in at all. I'm cycling a tank right now to move the snails out in hopes my shrimp population will rebound, given I just saw baby shrimp in the tank for the first time just yesterday!

Also, if we're going "nano", I'd have said Pygmy Corydoras, instead of just any Corydora. They are much smaller and ideal for a little 10 gallon nano tank. In fact, if you had a small school of both Chilis and Pygmy Cory's, you could probably even push it to a 5 gallon tank.

Would have loved to know what a nano tank is - is it 5gallon? 8 gallon? Also, how many fish of each? I'm thinking of getting 5-6 neon tetras (and no other fish) for an 8 gallon aquarium Is that too many?

Hello love the information you guys give out. To much bad stuff out there. Had a quick question. I kept Electric Yellows for years in a 125 gal tank. Keep up with the filter and water changes and had no problems. Recently started dialysis and moving to a senior/disability community of apartments alone. I am able to get pets approved and have already eliminated a dog because I just don't think I can care for it properly. A cat has crossed my mind as well but a small aquarium could be the answer. I'm talking probably 15gal on less. I've always been fond of neons and white clouds...etc. But my question is a 15 gal or less a home that is good for these types of fish. I know they tend to school. I also know not to overcrowd. Any ideas or links to prior videos you can recommend?

Instead of making the tank be nano, I much prefer the fish to be tiny in a big tank. You can keep the fish in groups they're more comfortable in, and they have more room to behave naturally.

I have a 29G nano tank, none but the pepper cories & kuhli loach are longer than an inch. A bigger tank makes for much more activity and interaction between the fish and the environment.

Nice video! Really surprised chili rasboras weren't on the list they are the perfect nano fish. I agree with most of the choices except for the neon/cardinal tetras they get quite a bit bigger than your typical nano fish and really shouldn't be kept in a nano aquarium if you have an appropriate sized school IMO.

Bettas are highly territorial. If they are the only thing in the tank they'll be very aggressive with new "intruders". However if you add a betta (preferably the less aggressive females) to an established community tank, they will not consider themselves the alpha boss and will be chill.

So I got a 3 gallon nano tank for shrimp/frogs and wanted it planted. So I bought plants online and in a local store and ended up with all these baby fish I didn’t know what they were. 3 goldfish and a white cloud ( a few fry died) so I got a ten gallon to grow out goldfish till they got bigger and could go out in my 300 gallon “pond” where my original “fair “goldfish and plant “ bonus” goldfish live. So then I got 3 (1 died) white clouds to keep company. Duh! Now my goldfish are getting big enough where they NEED to go to pond ( dirty buggars I can’t keep parameters) and I have these 3 white clouds. So I’m thinking shrimp and some more white clouds and some pearl danios or guppies for 10 gallon with a few shrimp? But then I saw cories and I thought what about 3-4 corries (small) and 2-3 more white clouds as one is a bully and the other 2 have to hide too much, and some shrimp? Too much? The tank has done well with goldfish and plants have survived and growing like crazy so I’m hoping that’s not too much? Help!
