Thank you so much for this lovely feature - I wasn't expecting my granddad to get in touch but I'm very grateful that he did! My nights haven't been too sleepless so far as Alannah and Orla are both still in hospital (the birth was 6 weeks premature) so I've got the house to myself! But they have both been recovering enormously well and surprising the doctors with their progress - I'm so proud of them both! My main job between hospital visits has just been getting the house ready, though Alannah very kindly gave me the evening off to watch this video with my family, who have come to visit to help with all the chaos! As for the puzzle itself... it was a real pleasure collaborating with Marty on this series of sudokus - he's such a talented and inspiring setter, and now a very good friend - and I'm impressed that you've jumped from the first (Mods, which was featured a couple of weeks ago) to the third! The fourth goes a little bit crazy...! The opening of this one is definitely easier if you happen to know the exact order of digits to investigate, but you did an excellent job traversing that particular gauntlet and showcasing the logic in the rest of the puzzle. We were particularly pleased with the near perfect symmetry, and with that final deduction involving 2s - I'm glad you enjoyed that too! I may have to put my "evil genius" (a reputation I'm more than happy to take!) sudoku construction a little bit on the back burner for a while... but I'll still be watching, and I'll be setting up Orla's LMD account any day now!!! :) --- I wrote this all before seeing Marty had already commented. I'll just add that I concur with his comments about how nice it is to watch you look for the best approach to solving this and that it's not always perfect, but the colouring system that you landed on very quickly was genius solving! Marty's kindly pointed out that I was the primary constructor for this and the 4th in the series, but his help with testing and feedback was much appreciated, and he made the first by himself as well as being the inspiration for the rhyming titles and therefore the series as a whole! Can't wait to get back to collaborating one day soon :D

Congrats for the children. ------ I have a question about the turquoise line. Both here and the puzzle from 2 weeks ago the following was true about them: If the line is at least 4 cells long and is in at least 2 boxes, than you can take the length of the line and deduct from that its longest section and that number will be the difference. So is this true for all these or is this just a giant coincidence?

@@kicsilaci That's not true or justified from the rules given in this puzzle. You could have a line that was 3 in one box and 1 in another, so 4 - 3 = 1. But there's no reason that line couldn't have a different of 2 or 3 or 4.

This was a lovely surprise this evening, totally didn't expect this. Will say upfront that Stu deserves full credit for this great puzzle. We collaborated on the series as a whole and both helped flesh out the ideas for all 4 puzzles, test them and make tweaks, but this particular instalment (part 3) and part 4 were designed by ThePedallingPianist himself. When I first tried it and saw that bit at the end where the double 2s were ruled out from being on the line, and finishing off the puzzle, I couldn't believe it! I had to message him immediately to give him props. Possibly my favourite part from the whole series. Simon did brilliantly at getting to grips with the quad circle logic... much quicker than I did! He even thought about it in exactly the same way that Stu did; awarding 'points' to cells based on how many digits they placed in circles. I felt like he had stepped right into Stu's brain when he started colouring up the cells based on points. Particularly impressed with Simon almost immediately spotting that 8 was the digit absent from circles and placing it in r6c7. I totally hadn't considered that simple way of doing it... I went around the houses, realising that 8 couldn't appear in any odd circles, and there weren't enough quad spots available for eight 8s, so that was the way I realised 8 couldn't be in a circle. You didn't let us down at all Simon, I personally would find it much less entertaining if you spotted everything robotically and immediately... the best part of these videos is seeing how you tackle things, how you mull things over, get stuck occasionally and then have a breakthrough. And this video was full of all that good stuff. So thanks once again for a great feature, thanks Stu for being an awesome person to collaborate with, and congrats on the birth of baby Orla :D

Thank you both for such a wonderful puzzle!! I started to watch but when Simon was reading the rules I was so fascinated I had to do the puzzle first. I saw the circle logic right away and using the counts worked out the 8 then 6 and 4 then 9,7,5 but that was just the beginning, the sudoku I found a real challenge and it took me forever to find the initial line could not be 2 2's!!

Simon is my favorite: "I'm not very good at these purple lines"

a small oversight at 48:50. simon said that r2c6 and r3c7 had to be the same, but they could have been a 3 and a 1. the only thing stopping it is the 128 triple in row 3 which wasn't mentioned

"I thought I saw something, but I haven't, bother, bother..." says Simon. All the while there is that turquoise stairway ending in a possible 46. However once Simon had figured out the line would feature two 4's... there was no way the last digit in the line could end up as a six. Later on, Simon places a 6 right above the 46-pair... ...I think there can be so much going on in these kinds of puzzles, it can become hard to spot what's right in front of you.

These videos wouldn't be half as fun if Simon finished the Logic he started... Is he just so excited to move on to the next idea that he forgets what he said a minute ago? Is he doing it so that more comments like these keep popping up? Who can possibly say? But yes, he does say something to the effect of "If this is a 6, that has to be a 5", rules out a 5 and then moves on.

@@jensschmidt I concur. I think Simon started thinking ahead, and just didn't think to continue the logic of the line. I find a lot of these puzzle require you to ask certain questions, or think along certain lines, which Simon is often very good at. However he doesn't always finish a line of thought, or at least the line of thought I was having. Sometimes it works, sometimes we point it out.

Every time Simon says he'll share the secret, dunno why but it makes me feel warm and special.❤

I could never solve any of these puzzles, but I've been reminded how much I love sudoku and have gotten back into doing puzzles. I love how wholesome these videos are, and they always make me smile.

You pointing out the punctuation helped figure out the sentence. Thank you for that hint. It made me feel good too be able to figure it out from that point on.

Simon really struggles with the equidistant-line rule.

Around 26 minutes, Simon literally says “one is always in [box 6].” He’s referring to 9’s when he says one must be in the box, but I think it’s really funny that the same statement (and intended path) is also be true looking at the literal 1’s!

I love these kinds of circles becoming more of a thing. It's always an interesting wrinkle to the puzzle, and this one was extraordinarily clever. Loved it.

Of all the people in the world, I 'converse' more with Simon and Mark combined than I do with all other people combined.

After 58:20 he is not very good at purple lines.

This was such an interesting and clever puzzle. It took me 52 minutes and change which I’m quite pleased with.

Was very happy to solve it more easily than I expected. Lovely logic.

38:00 for me. i usually most enjoy breakthroughs that aren't too nerdy or too "oh i need to color these specific cell regions to use set theory once and then it's just too easy" and this puzzle did not disappoint! the sequence of conclusions was quite logical but still felt like i was trying 😁 and once you get all the circle clues semi deduced it's quite exciting to fill in the grid using the other rule and pure sudoku... loved this one for sure, thanks to the creators and congrats!!

20:29 for me. Great puzzle, loved the twist in the rules when I read them!

33:53 for me. Found this quite approachable, having done the similar recent puzzles and knowing that the first step is always to count the numbers. I liked how the 5-cell line interacted with the line in Box 5; by forcing a 4 onto the Box 5 line, which couldn't then have a 1 or 2 (because 6 and 7 couldn't be placed on either end of the line), thereby eliminating the 41414 and 42424 options for the 5-cell line.

44:43 Giving it a second thought now actually places the 9, because those difference lines have interesting parity behavior (namely, each two steps on the line will result in a difference of either 2n or 0 from the starting point, which means evenly-distance cells on such a line will always have the same parity digit, therefore you can't have a 9 two steps away from a 4 or 6)

44:17 for me. One of the best 'circle' puzzles I've ever seen! Kind Comment.

I really liked how the turquoise difference lines created a sort of tutorial, sort of guiding you through the parity trick first, then how the length 3 lines must have both a digit higher and lower than their central cell. I did box 5 a bit more exhaustively after noting that the difference line needed a 4 on it, and finding from there that 468 was the only working option that had a 4, which I was both a little proud of but thought there was probably an easier way. I had an easier time with the break-in than I do in most puzzles of this difficulty. Very very fun puzzle!

Love to watch your brain work and teach us what you are thinking Simon. Another wonderful solve from you with all your panache!!

Quite an adorable puzzle. Simon made it seem so easy but that ending at 1:08:13 is absolutely brilliant. It took me a good 5 minutes to find.

I tought it would be way harder then it was! Discoving that 8 was not in the circle, and than putting 9,7,6.. in "their places" (imagine where they will are, not exactly putting them there) become very nice to do. Latter the turquoise lines become super enjoyable. Got in 26:37, thanks for this amazing puzzle Simon!

39:16 finish. It took me a few minutes to find the break-in (AFTER I placed my first digit), as I started on a similar thought to Simon. But once that first domino fell, things flowed quite well. Such an enjoyable puzzle. Excellent!

10 mins and broke the puzzle. Restarted more carefully, and then took 40 mins for me. Thanks!

40 minutes... once I understood that the even numbers are the break in, it made all sense and nicely fell into place... need to watch the video now to see Simon's struggles :)

Yeah. Best to start with 6 then 4, before moving on to 9 and 7. After placing all the "circle" digits, I think the correct path was to figure out the upper right line went 4-?-4-?-4, which forces a 4 onto the line in box 5. And if you look at that line carefully, there is only one way it works: 4-6-8 starting in bottom right. Then, the question marks in the upper right line are resolved. Then (with some sudoku), the line in box 1 can be resolved, and then the line in box 9.

1:06 Simon is usually proud - with reason - of his thorough Snyder notations, but he doesn't make use of them 😂

Finished in 36:13. Loved the break-in for this as it seems pretty logical once you thought of it. I messed up with an assumption about one of the lines, but was fortunately able to backtrack to my wrong assumption and work it through from there. Great puzzle!

I was so happy to figure out to remove the 2s from the line because they knocked 2's out of the center box. That's the type of trick I usually need Simon or Mark to help me figure out, but this time, I managed it myself!

I love being one of the favorite people. :3 I also love the phrase, "By Sudoku, of all things!"

At 59:40 minutes in, Simon says the 4 he discovered, (which we all saw should have been discovered long before), he says the 4 does nothing. In fact it place 4 on the line in box 5, and then the line has to be a 468 line. Can't be 432 because of the 3 in box 2, and can't be 456. Just another indication that trying to solve Sudoku while filming for an audience creates challenges.

Thought exercise: Imagine a 16x16 grid with the hexadecimal digits 0-F and the constraint that a digit N appearing on a circle indicates the digit N appears in N circles. The grid has exactly 100 circles, and one 4x4 region has 13 circles in it. What are the possible combinations of digits that do not appear on any circles? (Hint: There are exactly 5 possible combinations by my calculations )

1:17:04 - That was lovely. Some gorgeous logic and once you’d got your head round the rules it flowed very nicely.

I had a pretty different middle than simon. my logic was the same up to 38:48 except without thinking of 9s at all, until i had all the 1,2,4,6 and 8s already in the grid, which made it a lot easier to get that the red must be 9. From here, our solves differed a lot. the next thing i thought of were 3s. we have forced circled 3s in boxes 2, 6 and 7. that's all circled 3s, so none of the other boxes can contain 3s. not only that but all of the grey circles in those boxes are counted multiple times, so the 3s can't be in any grey circle. same goes for 1s. so every grey circle is a 579, and the red 9 tells us that a lot of them are even 57 pairs. so then i looked at 5s. we have a 57 pair in row 5 and in col 8, plus 3 5s in boxes 2, 6 and 7. that's all circled 5's accounted for. this means that the grey circles in boxes 1, 2 and 8 are all 7s or 9s, and that the ones in boxes 1 and 8 are the same. they can't be 7s, or they would break the 57 pair in col 8, so they're 9s, which lets us fill in every grey circle and gets us the same grid as at 47:00 in the video

This was my way, too. (Or at least it was on my second attempt. I made the error of looking at 9s early on my first attempt, and wrongly pencilled 9s in box 2 into the top two cells of c5. It broke eventually, but allowed me to realise 1s, 2s and 3s should be looked at after 8s. My second attempt was much smoother.)

Simon, it's actually more fun when you don't immediately catch on to what it is you "should" be doing to solve the puzzle. There's so many complicated stuff your brain goes through most of the time that's absolutely fascinating to me!

Every time Simon said "I know you guys are screaming at the video" in the past videos, it wasn't that bad, and I never screamed. Today, I did, I screamed at him to look at the turquoise Line like it was screaming with the answer. As always, it's lovely watching Simon stumble and find the answer with ways you don't usually think of.

Brilliant idea for a puzzle! :-) It would be nice though if the invisible quadruple clues were a sort of Fog of War clues as well, so that the white circles would be eventually filled up by the corresponding digits...

53:15 for me. A very challenging puzzle at first for me, but once I found the break-in it became a lot easier. The day this went up, I thought it was too complicated for my brain at this moment, but when I actually decided to do it, it was workable once I read the rules more carefully. And I got to use THE SECRET!

21:49 for me got all the thoughts in the correct order and it went so smooth, beautiful puzzle

That was almost my exact experience and time!

30:30 for me. This was so much fun! Love the circles and love the twist on the circles this time around

I managed to find the start very quickly, but then I got stuck in the sudoku part for quite a while, making my time of ~90 minutes rather than maybe ~30 minutes if I was actually good at sudoku. Thanks for the fun puzzle :)

Very clever setting. Enjoyed solving it!

The sandwich board "riddle" at the beginning reminds me of Aldous Huxley's response to the Mad Hatter's riddle ("Why is a raven like a writing-desk?"). His response was "Because there is a 'b' in both, and an 'n' in neither." I love this because the proper response to something that's only pretending to be a riddle... is something that only pretends to be an answer! BTW, I don't know how standard this terminology is, but Rangsk calls the trios of columns "stacks", and the trios of rows "bands".

Even though this is undoubtedly a brilliant puzzle, I get so much more pleasure watching Simon battle his way through it, while berating his (quite brilliant) brain for being slow. Little does he realise that mere mortals would take a month of Sundays to fill out this grid We’ll played to all involved. A joy.

Same Difference Lines are SURELY Simon's Achilles Heel ... My Goodness

The 34-to-128-to-XX segment of the equidistant line does have a situation where the difference doesn't require the 34 digit and the XX digit to be the same: 3 to 2 can go to 1, which can go back up to 2. This fails at the 46 blue-colored square, because the 2 would have to go up to 3 which is neither 4 nor 6. But, that is something which requires exploring to prove your assumption that the line bounces back up such that XX is the same as the 34 digit.

This is really cool puzzle series! I beg you to try the last one from this series.

Thanks for the recommendation. I solved it! Only the eleventh solver in the CtC software. Took me a few hours and three restarts. 😂 I'd missed the original instruction to remove the zeros from the completed grid for the answer checker to work. I was worried when it said it didn't look right. I went back to the LMD page and saw the instruction then.

When Simon said "if you had all the thoughts in the correct structured order" I was like that was me this puzzle. I instantly got what they were going for and so my break in was very fast. Of course I didn't beat simon's time overall however because I'm still not a champion level but I felt very cool and wanted to give kudos to both simon and pedaling pianist for a marvelously fun puzzle.

Love this vids, it’s my evening routine to get asleep! So goodnight!

3:40 I saw something similar before. It's not a question. 12:50 Since the digits in the white quad circles are invisible, they don't appear there. 27:00 The gray circles are limited to 579, so we a swordfish on two of those digits. 28:30 I suggest beginning with 1s and 2s, and then the remaining even digits, followed by 3s. Now I've done something wrong, because I've broken the puzzle. (Later: I found an alternate way to get nine 9s, and it entailed filling in all the odd circled cells.) 39:50 The simple way breaks the puzzle. 54:10 The line with the 4s ends in a third 4. That's the only way to maintain the difference.

Literally the only thing I figured out about this puzzle looking at it initially was that the 8 had to be in R6C7, and then Simon found it in a far more convoluted way, but I think in a way that demonstrated a much deeper understanding of the puzzle. My thought was just that 8 could never be in a circle because it could obviously never go on an Odd circle, and there were only 7 Quad circles available, and so there's only 1 spot for the 8 in box 6.

30:55 oh man, sometimes I don't understand why Simon simply doesn't make some experimentations. He goes straight to some general abstract proof.

The pub riddle reminds me of the other completely accurate sentence, "A word in this sentence is misspelled."

25:33 for me!! Don’t know what it is about the circle count rule but I seem to spot the logic for it very very quickly 😃

Finished in 56:52. I was pretty tired and when I got a bit stuck early on I wanted to just turn it off and go to bed, but the ruleset was intriguing enough to keep me going, and I'm glad I did because that was fun!

I picked up on the idea that the grey circles needed to be {579} early on, when I noted 1 and 3 were fixed in certain boxes. May have helped when trying to work out where 9 and 7 went. And yes, the order in which you think about the numbers and where they need to go is important. I latched onto 1, 2 and 3 early on.

You do not have to count the digits inside the circles to recognize that 8 cannot be in a circle: 8 cannot go into odd circles, and there are only 7 Quad-Circles total. There's simply not enough room for 8s, so it cannot be in any circle. This together with box 6 only having one non-circled cell (taken by 8) then tells us all the other digits have to be circled.

A delicious puzzle treat filled with awesome sauce and "what a jam"!

An Idea that just came to me while watching a different KZread channel: Cracking the Cryptic does COUNTDOWN

_" Each quad (ie black) circle contains [...]"_ Well, if they were black, the white digits written inside them would be visible❗ 🤣

This puzzle was an interesting one. The Quads & Odds part was far easier (just needed to focus on 6 & 4 placements) while the Mods one was super irritating to find the possible type of combination on the difference lines. Took me 42:38 to complete because of that.

This puzzle was as smooth as a fine single malt Scotch.

Under an hour. Really interesting setup. Edit: Ahh ignoring that line in the middle made that take much longer. You get a lot of information off of that one once you force a 4 onto it, which happens early and he never noticed. I also means that the digits on the other blue line cannot be 2s because they cant go on the line with the 4 without breaking another box.

1:18:35 for me, i "got" the puzzle much faster than Simon did but he's obviously much faster at sudoku XD

Fun puzzle, and not too hard. 20:36 was my time today.

I loved that one. A rare occasion where I just totally got it: 36:45.

Sadly, this joke doesn't work in German: "Was hat 3 Buchstaben, manchmal 8, aber nie 3 Buchstaben." Well, 3 = 3, so there's no "but". Ah, there's the solution: "Was hat 3 Buchstaben, manchmal 8, aber niemals 7 Buchstaben."

I will inform you that nothing has 7 letters. Simon took too long thinking about 9s when he should have thought about 1, 2, and 3. I also considered odds before considering 4 or 6, particularly on account of the 5 which had to appear in only two grey circles in r258c258 as well as appearing once at most in the white circles of each of b267. After considering positions of 123 in b267, you realize all grey circles can only use 579 after all.

48:53 Simon is wrong here. Theoretically 3-2-1 could fit-the third digit could be different from the first-but that combination breaks for other reasons (the 128 triple and as he notices later, the final digit having to be 4 or 6). It's unclear to me if Simon realized 3-2-1 couldn't work but didn't mention it, misspoke and said “number” when he meant “parity” as he uses later, or didn't even consider it. With how exhaustive Simon generally is, I'd presume the last option, but idk·.

These circle puzzles fold my brain in funky ways. Here I had to go through a few notation methods until I really wrapped my head around what was going on. (Settled on coloring cells based on how many circle clues they touched, edit: which I see is what Simon is doing too)

You could also know the 8 must be the odd digit out because 8 is even, which makes it so that it cannot go in a grey circle, as Simon mentions. However, there are only seven white circles, so you cannot have 8 in eight circles, and therefore 8 cannot be in any circle. Since 8 is even, it must be the odd one out. You can then use this fact with 6 to see that 6 must be in 6 of the seven circles, enabling you to get 2 sixes. I'm curious if Simon makes that deduction, I'm still early on in the video

There we go! He got it at 38:49 That took a while but that does make me feel smart :) I make tons of mistakes and am garbage at sudoku, so I'll take my victories where I can get them

"I'm not very good at these purple lines"... lol, yes, it's a bit painful to watch, and also those lines aren't even purple :-)

49:40 Simon didn't give a complete explanation of why these line must go high-low-high or low-high-low. It may be 321 in box 2 and 3, but then in box 4 that would put 23 which is impossible.

also, 321 is ruled out because if 2 is in r3c6, then 1 is in one of the two cells to its left in box 2. But I think actually Simon just didn't think of the 321 option, but it would have been very quickly disproven anyway

Nice rules. 80:24 for me, solve counter 1469.

Welp, I gave this three goes and hit a wall immediately each time. Watching the video! Edit: I lied. 56:52. I watched enough to see that r6c7 had to be an 8, which I figured out at some point before, but broke my solve. Restarted from there. I then got to the end but the puzzle said I was wrong and it turned out I mistyped a 2 in r5c5 and had to undo a lot.

First thing I tried was dark mode to make the white ink legible.
