Have a 2019 Forester. Bought it new. Nearly 100,000 miles. Zero issues. I change engine oil and filter every 5,000 miles. Burns no oil. Averages 30 mpg. I'm really happy with it, although I wanted an RAV4, but my wife preferred the Forester.

@@Embarrassed4U Subaru are nicer to drive but these days I prefer reliability. My ride is a 2004 Sequoia. Boring and heavy on gas but very reliable, and picked it up cheap.

I'm 67. my 2013 has been burning oil since day one. the wheel bearings were so bad it sounded like a P-51 fighter plane was chasing us. took me a little over 2 hours to change both back ones. did a good brakes then decided to do the front! now it stops on a dime and I can hear the wife when she's talking....to bad..

I've owned both a Subaru and Mazda, and both were solid and made it well past 100k. I've owned even more Toyotas, but now that Toyota (and Honda) are pricing themselves as premium brands, those days are probably over. Also very happy with my V6 Frontier that I now have (because Tacoma prices went into geo-stationary orbit). Thanks Scotty.

My 2018 2.7 Tacoma access was $ 28,500. plus tax. In American bucks it was about $ 22,500. EXPENSIVE !! I only have 40 Kilometres or 25,000 miles and it's worth 45,000 now because of inflation and because it's not a crappy GM or Hyundai fire truck. lol If you marry a cheap easy girl it will cost you half a house when she bangs the neighbours. lol

Some Toyota four cylinder motors had a problem with oil burning years ago

Hey Scotty, people often neglect to change the pcv valve on these Subarus causing most of the oil leaks. Change that thing every 60k miles they’re cheap and easy to do.

my stability control actually worked quite well in a snow storm when trying to get off an exit full of snow.

I had two Subaru outback’s (98 and 09). The handling was outstanding, but I had to have the head gaskets done in BOTH of them. ($4K each!) Love/hate relationship to be sure. Now a Lexus RX owner and never going back.

2010 forester 208000 miles all original parts. Works smooth. Also heated seats means heated windshield wiper melt pads

I do have 2015 Subaru Forester with 194k miles. Running good still.

Shhhhhh! There's several Subi-haters in this forum - they'll wet their pants if you tell them this!

On our third Subaru Forester. Had an ignition coil go, and it took out both catalytic converters. Subaru replaced both free of charge. Had an air conditioning hose leak cost a few hundred to replace. No other problems. Loyal to Subaru!

I just bought a 2023 Subaru Forester out right so i didn't feel the need to spend another 10 plus grand for a Honda or Toyota vehicle loaded with sensors which is new to me since my last new vehicle was a 1998 pickup truck which i fixed most of it's faults myself but modern technology scares me plus at my age i will be happy if it last 10 years since my last 2 vehicles are still running good 1994 dodge dakota/1998 dodge ram

Scotty, this is the FB Engine with the same RVT gaskets on the cam carriers. You can tell because of the top mounted filter

We drove our 2011 outback 11 years and 255,000…engine was great! Our current 2018 crosstrek has 148,000km…been flawless. Our 2022 forester I expect to be just as reliable.

Here in England the 6 cyl boxers are reckoned to be the best of the lot, certainly my experience, chain drive on the 6 pot too. Our 2.5 turbo Forester runs great, still looks new at 15 years. Subarus need decent maintenance or they will give trouble, its neglected cars that go wrong, spark plugs are horrible to change but normal maintenance is easy, how many other cars still have 3 dipsticks under the bonnet, engine gearbox and front diff. Our Forester even has its own spin on oil filter for the auto gearbox, no need to take the sump off, just refit a new oil filter same as you would doing an engine oil change. The downside to them is they arn't good on fuel, but nothing grips or drives like a Subaru, try keeping up with one on wet twisty roads, can't have everything.

I've owned a 2012 Impreza with well over 100,000 miles and have never had one problem. A great little car and it has the best all wheel drive system made.

I bought a 2017 Impreza brand new.... my first and LAST Subaru! All-Wheel drive was the best ever.... but I had 7 recalls, the rear brakes got messed up and wore the rotor down so they gave me new pads and resurfaced the rotor under warranty. The infotainment system never worked that good. Rust bubbles in the black paint after only 2 years, heat shield rotted away and rattled... coolant was below the low line and the dealer gave me trouble when I asked them to fill it up. The cvt transmission never felt right... you could feel it skip and jerk even when I had cruise control on. And the final straw was when I was driving on the freeway and went to pass someone and when I slowed down the engine made a loud knock/ticking sound and that never went away. I only had 52,000 miles on it so the engine was still under warranty.... but at that point I was done and traded it in for a different brand. Never again Subaru!!!

I am on my second Sub Forester. First one was a 2012 I put 165,000 miles on it it used a quart of oil every 1,500 miles. I now have a 2022 with 15,000 mile not problems at the moment. I like the all wheel drive in it because off the area were I live. I believe my next vehicle will be a Corolla hatch back, better fuel economy.

Hey Scooty, I have a 2004 sti with 189,000miles still original engine, no oil leaks and no oil burning at all.

Thats not true about the H6. I have a 07 legacy H6 and NEVER had a problem with that engine. I'm at 204thousand and no issues.

I think a big factor is the person who owns the car and how they treat it. Even a Honda or Toyota engine will blow up before 100k miles if it's abused/not maintained.

The engines themselves are alright, it's the poor cooling due to the small engine bay that causes issues. People that drive carefully tend to do much better with them, but you really never know how well a car has been maintained when you buy used.

Most people I know have had very good luck with Subaru.

We bought a new 2012 Impreza. The CVT and engine have both been replaced in 2016. Subaru stood behind their product even after the warranty expired. These were replaced at 65k and 95k. Has been running fine ever since.

I would think Subaru is still better than Mitsubishi or Nissan... awhile back Scotty said highly of the CrossTrek and Outback...

I have a 15 Forester I've had since new and have 135,000 miles on it with few problems. The 2.5 engine uses about 1/3 qt/5,000 miles between changes. So, no reason to be afraid of Subaru engines.

Scotty is always on the money.. The latest advice from Scotty that I followed, was to replace my brakes with Akenono ceramic pads and high carbon rotors. Braking in my Camry never feltr felt better! Thank you Scotty..

My 2016 Forester is serving me well so far. Gets pretty good gas mileage as well.

I have a 2019 Nissan Rogue SV 2.5L 4cyl AWD. After doing 80-85 on the GSP, I get roughly 29mpg when rated for 32. I prefer AWD simply because I drive in certain conditions better than FWD. My opinion. I'm looking at a Subaru WRX, Forester, Honda Civic, Toyota Camry as my next car.

I have 2 Forester's and daughter has one and happy with them.

subaru H6 engines are the best of all subaru engines. EZ30 doesnt have problems. but still the most relaiable are phase1 EJ´s, like EJ18 or EJ22

First year of the fb series engines. And yes they still consume oil if poorly maintained.

I got 179k miles out of my 2007 Subaru Legacy but I did have to replace the head gaskets before 100k and they were leaking pretty badly again. Anyway, I just traded it in on a '23 Mazda 3 Premium AWD sedan. It's a nice upgrade!

That K series in that CRV is bulletproof. Not like the Honda 1.5l turbo series these days.

Subaru doesn't use silicone to seal the engine components instead of gaskets, they use RTV. RTV's life expectancy is about 40 years. It's fine. The important thing is to do your regular maintenance and change the oil and filter regularly (like 5,000 miles). Also, change the CVT and diff fluids every 5 years or 60,000 miles. That will also help prevent issues with the CVT (if equipped).

@@Mach141 it's not "regular" silicone though, in the way people talk about it. It's use as a gasket is actually common.

Scotty, that Honda CRV has the K24 engine- don’t trade it in , the engine will run for at least 300,000 miles . I don’t think the new Honda 1.5 turbo engine / CVT Will last after the warranty expires.

on our 2012 they put in a stupid fuel economy gauge despite there being one on main display rather than a temperature or oil pressure gauge.

Older year Subys had issues with HG and rings.

Subaru's are fantastic cars. If maintained properly they will run forever. I find them too be very easy to maintain and work on. Everything is easily at hand. I've worked on dozens and never found any to use silicone glue. Honda's and Toyota have their own issues as do every manufacturer. I have a 2007 Forester 227k mile. Only issue was gasket oil leak. Simple fix. Also have a 2013 Impreza. 169k miles. Only issue is catalytic converter needs replaced. Can't beat them in the snow ❄️.

2007 subaru forester AT 200k miles. Only basic maintenance. Burns no oil. 2018 Kia soul + 160K AT. Burns 1 quart every 3k miles. Adhering to severe operating conditions.

I’m a Subaru technician, the newer boxers are completely junk. I’ve had to pull the engine on a wilderness forester with 12k miles to reseal the cam carriers

I got an 06 sti with 183k miles and still runs like a champ, been seeing the talk on subarus being bad for years now but no issues owning mine since 2016. Wonder if it is something about the newer ones

I get 26 in the city and 32 in the highway with my 2015 Forester

Earlier this year I spent $8,600 at a dealer to get various things repaired or replace for my 2009 Outback. I know my car isn't worth that much in good condition but I wanted to give it one last chance. Unfortunately, even though I asked them to fix whatever was wrong with the engine, it was running just as badly as when I brought it in and it is getting a lot worse so that really screws me.

And, this is Subaru's fault? You were HAD, dude, and ANY DEALERSHIP can potentially do that to you if you let them. And, if your Outback was in decent condition, your car was worth more than what you think.

scotty CAREFUL that's a 4EAT not known for lasting long without routine service ,you said before subaru has weak transmissions, seems like it was holding the gear kind of long but then again wide open. scotty forgot to mention these are a later version of 2.5 it has timing chain yet still interferance. 4,480 lbs.

I like how scotty shows that they rust proofed the car properly at the factory. At the dealer when you but them they try to sell rust proofing. In 27 years I've owned 12 cars, 5 of them Ford the rest were real cars and 0 rust on body/frame in PA. I've had exhaust rot so they need to build them with lighter stainless. No reason for cat backs to weigh 40lbs on a 4 cylinder when stainless weighs maybe 15lbs and won't rust

I wouldn’t say the Subaru engines are lower quality … they are more apt to require service because they are more complex.

Do you think Subaru wiuld go back to using gaskets? If they do i would consider getting one. If i didn't need a pick up truck.

My Subaru and all the Subaru I had ran great . If you have any car over 100.000 miles you it should be payed off. And you are crazy to keep them .

Bought a 2.5 non-turbo Impreza brand new back in 2006. Multiple head gasket replacements--along with other issues--some years later have turned me off to Subaru forever.

My mum had a 1995 Subaru Forester for 35 years until it started having multiple issues, even though it spent a few expensive visits to the repair shop. Car died when my mum died in the 35th year.

Other channels clearly tell, it's STRICTLY only the EJ25 = 2.5l engines having the gasket problems, but none of the myriads of EJ20/2.0l (or even smaller ones).

I got a Subaru Forester with 180,000 miles on it. And it has become a real money bucket. Those parts aren't cheap.

My stepdad's head gasket in his outback blew, I can't remember the milage, but they are known for doing that, those boxer engines.

Besides the n/a 2.5s because of using graphite head gaskets instead of the MLS head gaskets used on the turbo version, none of the other variants of the Subaru boxer blew head gaskets any more frequently than other engines.

I owned a 2006 manual transmission Subaru Forester before I got my Toyota solara 5mt. I had to replace wheel bearings at 150k miles. My 2002 Sequoia 4wd is perfect at 253k miles. So, there's that.

The new ones are much better. Thank God Subaru fixed the issues. Wish Honda would fix their oil diluting engines and Toyota with their oil burning 4 cylinders....

I have a 2012 Forester with 83,000 miles. one bad strut-had to of course buy two was the biggest expense. Why can't they make a screen to prevent leaves from getting inside the engine compartment? It's the only thing i know how to fix however.

The thing with Subaru - on the plus side, you can pull an engine fairly quickly with basic tools - think the last time I did took a hour or so On the bad side, you have to pull the engine (or at least get everything loosened up) for several things you wouldn't ordinarily need to

Iv known many of those engines do 200K plus without issues, but they are not forgiving with abuse. Toyota on the other hand are bullet proof and you really need to drive them hard without oil and coolant for them to go south. Honda just lost being up there for burning out engines due to bad manufacture with the new recall of 250K vehicles.

Smart fellow. There's two very old Outbacks in our neighborhood, both way over 200k, and the owners are happy with them.

I was deterred from going Subaru after my 1st and last experience with a 2014 Impreza. It was burning oil. Dealership "fixed" it. Dealership tech forgot to tighten belt for cooling pump. Car overheated....back to shop. Still burning oil...back to shop. Lease came to an end and so was my relationship with that Impreza.

Something not adding up here- the water pump on the 2.5 is driven by the timing belt. My bet is a head gasket issue

This is why you never buy cars from a dealership, it's basically a scam. The people who work there are usually felons too. Worst cars I've ever owned came from dealerships, the best ones were bought from ppl who own the car at the time.

SUV's are station wagons, the name change is for marketing purposes.

Scotty, I love your videos but I have to tell you there’s Subaru out there with 200 up to 349,000 miles is the highest marked Subu vehicle it’s all about maintenance oil change into and preventive maintenance. Honda had many recalls many problems, so has Toyota.

My folks just bought a new one because BOTH there 15-20 year old ones now have BLOWN head "gaskets"..

Had a 2003 outback 380 000km and completely dry engine

I'm not sure I would take a single example of an engine needing major work as proving that Subaru engines aren't built well. I still have a 2001 Forester and still drive it around almost every day. (Wouldn't take it on a long-distance trip, though.) Just bought a 2024 Forester to replace it. I'll miss the cassette player in the 2001.

Subarus must have thier oil changed every 3000 miles. They are very sensitive to oil. I had one blow up at 5000 miles between oil change itbwas my fault I got busy and forgot and when I remembered I couldn't get it in to get it chang÷ then while passing i/ through a rod 4000.00 dollars later I change the oil every 3000 mile like clock work.

I bought a brand new 2013 Forester that burned a quart of oil every 1500 miles. Dropped it like a hot potato after a year of owning it. Never again.

Do the 2014 Foresters have the same gasket glue problem?

Always had trouble with the Subaru boxers. They had issues of blown headgaskets at lower mileage. It was the way they were engineered. They copied the VW pancake engine and put water jackets around it to be water cooled vs air cooled. Had coolant flushed and replaced one time at a goofylube and they failed to to bleed it by elevating it to get air bubbles out of it. Headgasket blew after 20 miles due to hot spots from air.

I have a friend we both have H6 2004 Outbacks mine is a LL Bean Wagon and hers is a limited Sedan we bought them new around the same time both are H6 and hers has 480k miles and it’s on its original engine and transmission, mine has 96k miles I don’t know that mine will ever see 150k miles in my lifetime, my friends H6 Outback Sedan has been a phenomenal car for what it’s worth she’s going for 500k miles

Subaru still makes a compelling value play here in the Northeast. Need a safe all weather roomy vehicle to haul 2 kids and a dog around town and up to the mountain's cant beat Forester for 28k with heated seats and AWD.

I have a 13' legacy 4cyl(149k). It does have a temp gauge. It has been burning oil the past 30k miles. A half-quart every 1500-2000 miles. I need a new catalytic converter, and I have some tiny rust on the roof I want to get addressed. It's a nice car. Hasn't left me stranded like my bmw used to.

i have an 07 Pontiac G6 with 155,000 miles and it’s been great, a few little things and a new cat, but it still runs perfect, 0% fuel trim
