What I want to see is a Star Trek series where the captain is an alien, for the whole series. In fact, I want a Star Trek series on a Starfleet vessel where most of the characters are aliens. Like.... the captain is a Bolian, first officer is a Trill, the chief engineer is one of those three-limbed beings, main science officer is an Andorian, maybe whoever is flying the ship is usually a cetacean (not technically an alien but eh), and just for funsies, the doctor is a Cardassian woman. (Maybe Cardassia is on its way to joining the Federation after everything that happened during the Dominion War?) And then too I think it'd be fun to have a Tellarite ship's psychologist (who actually knows how to do the job properly.) I'd even like to see an exocomp that isn't a bad joke. Then there could be cool cameos like in some episodes they rendezvous with a ship full of Horta for some reason or other. (Maybe there's a Horta colony on some planet that's considered too hostile to life for most Federation species?) Alternatively, a Star Trek series where the whole ship is run by dolphins and other cetaceans.

I agree that that would be a cool idea. The reason I think they never did this is they want the main characters to be relatable, so there always has to be a heavy human presence. But my interpretation of the Bolians has always been that the whole point of having them is that they are psychologically as close to humans as possible, with any significant differences being their appearance. As such, if you as a writer want a non-human captain, pick a Bolian if you want to play on the safe side. All major races are psychologically different. Andorians are too temperamental, Tellarites are cute jerks and Vulcans are unemotional, et cetera. All major alien races are usually psychologically different to appeal to a certain aspect of humanity in the audience. Andorians appeal to our emotional side, Tellarites appeal to me as a Dutch person (we like being direct), Vulcans appeal to our autistic brothers and sisters, but Bolians are basically just those easy going foreign neighbours who you invite to your barbecue. They don't look like you, but they behave like you.

Much like the Gorn, the Bolians were probably never a really fully developed species or culture for the Star Trek Universe. The producers just needed some alien race to stick in an episode here or there, and went with a cheap visual look, filling in information as they went as was convenient. "How should Bolians look?" the special effects make-up artists inquired. "Well, we're working on a budget, so let's keep it cheap. Make'm Blue-colored and just give them a couple of ridges that might be cartilage along the head. Humanoid, of course, so we can just stick them in normal uniforms or clothing without sending the costume department into over-time, which isn't really in the budget at the moment. Damn Unions and their regulations," said the Executive Producers as he turned and walked out the door to his next meeting. I have no proof that this is what happened, but I bet this was basically the conversation.

I remember reading somewhere that the Bolian’s physiology is SO different, that when admitted to the Federation, it was learned that Federation plumbing had to be heavily fortified if any were on starship. There was some mention of an incident with a Bolian onboard a ship that essentially made it inoperable because of the incompatible plumbing. I’d always imagined that the bifurcation was an evolutionary remnant that allowed their face to split and show some terrifying visage to frighten predators. I STILL think that would be a cool idea and maybe some show runner will run with it,

Regarding Bolian Federation membership: I always considered the Federation, well, federative - especially in the socialist sense. That means all member planets are still autonomous and can have their own foreign policies. Today's nationstate federations, like the US and Germany, are much more centralized, and for sure the Federation's political structure is written widely different by different writers, but that inconsistency doesn't mean in my opinion that Bolians aren't members of the Federation, just that some authors know more about the conceptualization of federations. You have decentralized federations today as well, but mostly associations, cooperatives, labor unions and so on rather than nations.

You forget the most obvious real world analog, the European Union. The European Union is a sui generis organisation comprised of many nation states who have transferred some of their sovereignty to the EU and how much depends wildly on the policy area. In some areas the European Union has sole authority (the customs union) while in others the individual member states have still much autonomy, like foreign policy. I honestly think the EU is a model for future planetary or even interstellar organisations. Not an exact blueprint, but the EU has shown that there is much middle ground between a completely integrated supranational authority and loose nation states.

The member states of the EU still have much autonomy over their foreign affairs and multiple other policy areas, have their own languages and cultures, but are at the same time so heavily integrated we use the same currency and I can cross the border daily for shopping if I want to (fun fact, people near the Dutch-German border actually do this when certain products are cheaper on the other side).

like the klingons these were taken from bolaster and seeded as colonists to be slaves until war on bolaster caused them to abandon the distant colony which was a pet project of the affulent anyway. which is to say they were simplefolk intended to be cultivated as slaves. furthermore some xeno intervention made it impossible later on and for the longest time they assumed the colonies destruction. which is to say what happened to Bolaster? I have no idea. is it a current thing or a destroyed or abandoned one?

I’d imagine any colonies started with out the support of a fleet would be quickly raided by the many different space pirates. So a small generation ship lands, starts a colony then some jerks come by scan the planet and steal all tech. Then they either develop through their own Stone Age into modern tech. Or they die off and space collects grab up anything that remains. I think that’s a pretty good explanation of how races end up on one planet where they aren’t from. We also need to consider it may not have been a slave or worker situation. You are an advanced space race, you scoop up some dumb humanoids and put them on a planet where they do some job for you. Or you’re in a zoo or something.

Maybe its time for a bigger, over-arching 'how does the Federation work' video? It seems to me that several groups that already had colonizing space civilizations maintain their own fleets (even if their ships look Federation), like the Vulcans, Andorians, etc., and like the humans maybe have a few members of other species serving aboard their vessels, and they each patrol their own regions of space, so this would make the Federation operate more like ancient Rome with 'semi-autonomous provinces' (a 'republic'), and in the aspect of its military, more like NATO (ships from different 'nations' do joint ops for the greater good). Thus, there could actually be a three-tier system in place: Full members (smaller, single systems would likely join this category), 'allied members', who are Federation *and also* mostly autonomous (which would explain season 1 TNG Klingons, I guess), and actual 'military allies', which would be situational depending on the conflict, and mostly temporary (but does lead to a 'type 2' member eventually, if all goes well). Thus, like NATO members, if the situation isn't dire, the Federation need not get involved in smaller conflicts (refer to the Falkland Islands war between GB and Argentina - NATO stayed out of that because GB didn't need our help). That would explain how groups like the Bolians have their own, private struggles - everyone doesn't need to be involved in everything. Great video as usual.

THG does *sort of* have a Bolian main character in the form of Mot, but he is only in a small number of episodes through season 5 and 6, with subsequent Barbers being other characters passed off as the same character. Bit of a wasted potential and idea imo, I mean Mot got cut from an episode, which suggests to me there was conflict within the studio over the character. Which is a shame. A nod to him in Picard suggests that by 3999 he has a successful barber business post his time on the Enterprise D.

i feel like Bolians would be a nice addition to Star Trek Legacy. They are a polymanogamus species, presumably bisexual though not necessarily. they are at least a laid back, outspoken, sexually liberal species, and it feels like there are many relevant story possibilities there. Every Star Trek has an alien character, and i want the next one to be bolian. Their time is due.

They are basically progressive humans. I think that if you want an alien as a main character for the purpose of having an alien on the bridge you shouldn't pick a Bolian. By all means pick one, but you can basically interchange any extravert human character for a Bolian. That being said, I don't know how this is interpreted across the world. I am from the Netherlands, and Bolians are basically Dutchmen on a good day. Maybe American culture is different in that aspect.
