The general rule for understanding Stewie is that they *CAN* understand him, but it processes differently depending on who it is and what the situation is. While it does often change for comedy, there are a few constants: Brian can understand Stewie do to the bond between a child and his dog. Chris can understand Stewie because of their brotherly bond, though he just doesn't care about his genius. Peter has flat out admitted that he "drifts in and out" when understanding Stewie. Lois and Meg can't understand him for the most part, though of course that changes based on the joke. Close friends (Cleveland, Quagmire, Joe, etc.) are in the same boat as Lois and Meg, though they are a bit more likely to understand if Stewie acts weird. Everyone else can understand Stewie normally.

Meg does know that Stewie has a time machine tho - in one episode she admits to Brian that she knows about it and can hear it because their rooms are next to each other

also those who are not that close but have a one degree seperation (Like Cleveland's ex-wife loretta) don't fully understand stewie but can get the gist of what he's saying. THis is a specific rule stated outright in one episode.

I think the reason why these older episodes are so good is because Seth was actually involved in the writing process as opposed to later seasons when he took a backseat

yeah, now they use flash & a lot of motion tweening... which. can be a good tool but not when you use it for almost every movement lol

The animation in seasons 1 to 3 was a lot better than in later seasons. The characters actually looked alive and animation was more fluid.

I keep forgetting there was a time where I didn't hate Family Guy. I used to love watching re-runs on Adult Swim as a kid, but chalked it up to me being well, a child. But these old episodes actually aren't bad. Better animation, characters, jokes, and even a touch of sincerity.

When they talk about old Family Guy being better, they're talking about the *QUALITY* of the cutaway jokes, not the quantity. Notice how in classic episodes, the cutaways are a bit more zany and off the wall, while in modern episodes, it feels like Seth MacFarlane venting his biggest frustrations of the week.

Well, to be fair, the early seasons also actually had involvement from Seth beyond doing his lines. That might have something to do with it.

Everybody but Lois can understand Stewie, the joke is that sometimes it seems like Lois understands Stewie because his body language still reflects normal baby behavior without the context of what he says

I think what I like about earlier Family Guy is that the characters’ personalities are more subdued. Even Stewie being an evil genius psychopath is way calmer than what he is now.

Fun Fact: Seth McFarlane is huge Trekkie in real life and has played character in one of the Star Trek shows. So his show The Orville is literally him geeking out about sometning he was passionate about.

Season 1 was very different from the other seasons. Like how Meg was originally voiced by Lacey Chabert. I guess her acting wasn’t “fetch”ing enough. Audience: Booooo!!! Thank you, thank you! I’m here all night!

I actually think he used to be a great representation of a disabled character, that was until they just turned him into nothing but a punching bag

I think the reason early family guy is praised is even when it’s somewhat mean spirited, the majority of it is the family genuinely loving and caring for each other through thick and thin. However, it also makes it just another Simpsons clone, which is why I think they took the route of making it a lot more mean spirited, but that just becomes draining when you see they’ve gone from a dysfunctional but loving family to just a group of people that would do the absolute worst things imaginable to each other without blinking. Like you know your show has stooped low when Quagmire of all people is seen as the sane (albeit hypocritical) one when he berates Brian for all the awful character traits he got.

I looked it up, and the jonestown ‘drink the kool-aid’ reference happened on a Saturday. The day of the actual tragedy was also on a Saturday. If that was on purpose, great attention to detail.

How can these guy not notice that Season 1 Meg is voiced by a completely different person (Lacey Chabert)? And not even early FG is immune to being biased towards celebrities like Hanson (with Taylor being mentioned in a later episode very tastelessly).

I need to be able to talk about the fact that I failed my driver's test twice. And I'm a farmer's kid who's been driving tractors since I was 12, so people gave me enough grief for it. I have been in so many dangerous situations and come out clean, but they gave me no remorse. First time I clipped a curb (they described that as 'losing control of the vehicle"), second time I ran over a 6-in tall cone they had put right behind one of the rear tires backing out of a parking spot. These first three quality seasons are the series backbone. After cancellation in 2001 Adult Swim kept it alive alongside DVD sales. These original seasons were good enough to have the show come back in 2005, and maybe that's not for the best in all honesty. The show drifted so far from it's old level of excellence it's unwatchable at times
