The man on the right at 5:58 is the Japanese legend Funky Sueyoshi, who lived in North Korea a time, while creating a "School of Rock" in the June 9th school in Pyongyang. The all-female student band took it very seriously and there are some of their videos on KZread. They look so cool with those old ass instruments.

Yeah, that's a late 70's model Yamaha super bass, probably with the original strings. Thanks, I was wondering how it got there. Japanese guitars and basses from that era are excellent instruments with their own feel, and I snap them up whenever I see them.

Sueyoshi wasn't allowed to say the word 'rock' or use any existing songs, so he had to write all new songs and material when he was teaching them to play.

Musicians express the music. We don't need to watch musicians expressing themselves - you don't know them, and you can talk to them or read about them. If they want to express themselves, they can just be themselves, like asleep, they don't need to hide behind an instrument. Instruments are musical instruments i.e. instruments of music, not instruments of individuality.

Probably a rich kid in pyongyang that studied computer..hackers.. Most of the elite defectors studied in pyongyang tell that they can connect outside but you cannot tell it to anybody even in your closest fren.

Thanks Davie. I have a connection with this. Im an Australian musician & have played in bands for years & have my own recording set up at home. Ive always had this story to tell of the best bass player I think Ive ever seen. I was in North Korea around 15 years ago and one evening my Government minders took me to a show. It was a theatre type show with a live band off to the side, the show was quite good but I think I spent more time looking at the band and their bass player who was a girl around 18 yo because she was just amazing with her bass and just looked out with a almost bored look, whilst playing this ridiculous stuff. I still can't say Ive seen a better bass player. :-)

While you were there, did the Government Minders feed you? Did they ration food well to you? You know, that is just a facade, because the more you ate, the less other families ate. But I am sure you spent time in the homes of starving North Koreans while you were there. Did they provide you with food? So you took the food from a starving child just to go back to Australia and brag about how hunky dory everything was, just like they wanted you to. There comes a point, Westerner, that you are going to have to see North Korea for what it really is. An Army that does not even get in a year what you take home in an hour, actually dying of starvation, 10 years in the military away from their homes. Yes, that is why many South Koreans are just trying so hard to get into North Korea. Yeah, right? Just because your plate was full doesn't mean you know the real North Korea. Go to all of the videos of the defectors from North Korea and challenge them on how well you know and appreciate North Korea and just how much the government fed you to hide the truth from you.

Im not as naive as you think, I know what goes on there, Ive met with malnourished NK Army officers. and I know the problem for hospitals in treating oesophageal injuries from starving people eating the bark from trees in country areas. You said "Just because my plate was full doesn't mean I know the real North Korea," You don't know me or what I was doing there and what I know about NK, Im guessing I know a bit more about North Korea than you maybe? so I don't appreciate your sarcastic & condescending comments of me.
