@@submittedbymail I doubt most people can answer hard questions in few minutes. Hard questions are hard because answers are never straightforward requiring history, context, application and mis-application. If you have 2-3hrs interview like Joe Rogan podcast sure ask hard questions but be prepared for it to be a dialogue the interviewer needs to answer it themselves in the context for his personal experience. Now journalist asking hard questions is just a gotta tactic and clip cutting for headline fishing. Hard questions are meant to be explored because hard questions dont have clear partisan answers.

As a Minnesotan, the union leader is right: Expanding mining is only going to benefit the mining companies, but not the miners. Most modern mining is automated and doesn't need as much labor as it did in the past, especially if companies are trying to be cost-effective and competitive with China. Any expansion is not going to bring in nearly as many jobs as people think, and the little guy is going to continue to get screwed.

The union representative admits that local union representatives don't want to talk to the press about political positions because "they don't want to piss their members off."" Excuse me, I thought the union was there to promote the "members" best interests. I know it is taboo in some States to discredit the union but I have personally dealt with both sides of the union. There are the workers that pay union dues and there are the union executives who profit from those dues. What most working members of the union, those that pay the dues, don't know and will never be revealed to them by the company they work for or the union executives, is that when union contracts come due the executives of the union meet with company officials days before for the actual contract negotiations. When the meeting involving the working members of the union is scheduled, shop stewards, etc., the contracts have already been signed. The meeting with the working members of the union is only for show. It gives them the false pretense that they are part of the negotiations. Some may post that this is incorrect information but I have sit in both negotiation meetings. In the particular company I am referring to there existed both union and non-union facilities. The union facilities received less benefits and less pay than their non-union counterparts and these facilities had exactly the same jobs and existed in the same State. All non-union facilities received more pay and benefits than the union facilities. On top of that, the union facilities paid weekly union dues. The employees were aware that their sister facilities made more per hour and had better benefits. They were also informed that their pay and benefits would match their sister plants if the union was voted out but they never did. I truly did not and still do not understand this mentality. I ask you, who is really benefiting from your Union dues? In the original formation of the unions across America they were desperately needed but those days have long since past. All that aside, one thing is 100% sure. If you don't have a job because the government has deemed it environmentally unfriendly, there certainly won't be any negotiations over pensions, health care, or organizing. Your company won't exist and there certainly won't be a need for a union then. The union executives better wake up or they will find there is no longer any union dues coming in. Or, maybe the Democrats have made some " compensation" arrangements for their support. Just food for thought.

On these report, I understand that as European, some American conception are "weird" on European View. Saying that with Biden ( have moved too left their policies. Info from my country, we had NHS, an affordable college fees ($ 2 000/year lower if you income is low), maternity leave, paid vacation, a welfare nation, like most of European Countries, and nobody sayed that European Countries are a "communist countries". Obviously we criticize obviously the high taxes, or the disservices, or waste of momey, but nobody neither the most free-market party will propose to abolish these istitutions, like NHS, etc... reform yes, but not abolish. About question of miners, it's complicated, continuing to rely on coal, in not good, making the weather more crazy and more damangeous and causing a cathastrophe,I'll try also to to understand the reasons of miners, that they need of work in their community, and form most of them a eventual remansionment courses are too late, are more difficult to done. Gradual swap is also problematic, because in meantime the enviormental situation continue to worsening. The Polarisation of position of Democrats and Republicans done also due electoral purposes will not help to find a solution what make happy both sides, or make an acceptable deal by both sides. This also remind me a situation of my country: The ILVA of Taranto, there find that the industies produces to many pollution that caused a high incidence of cancer on the zone, findig that the industry don't comply the enviormental laws of the country making the risk of closure of industry due this... The problem is that was the one of biggest steel mill of Europe, initial this would be buyed by Acelor Mittal to make the industry open, but failed, not the industry was nationalized with 60% of shares owned by the state.

rightly said, I still wonder what makes U think humans can put an end to using IRON in the next 100-150yrs. It's indispensable at least for now! Instead of importing cheap ore from around the world while chest-thumping about shutting mines at home, the focus should be on better-extraction methods, responsible mining, pro-active aforestation, cleanup, etc!!

ᚠᚢᚱᛟᚱ ᛏᛖᚢᛏᛟᚾᛁᚲᚢᛊ ᛋ maybe it was a valuable skill then but not anymore. Everything is moving to automation and advancing with technology. This job will be replaced within 50 to 100 years becoming absolutely useless.

ᚠᚢᚱᛟᚱ ᛏᛖᚢᛏᛟᚾᛁᚲᚢᛊ ᛋ yet who’s making more money? A miner in a dead end town or a woman in gender studies? I know you wanna rip on gender studies, but at the end that’s actually gonna be more useless in terms of education and communication in this new world than a miner from the past.

And you have to understand that people have to eat. I agree we have to change the way we get our energy, but these families are not responsible for that. Big corporations and the government should have to develop a new energy strategy and get everybody into it. That's clearly not the case and in the meantime these people will continue to live on food stamps. Having to choose between the environment and feeding my family really is a no brainer

This mans a Coal minor at heart but obviously he's not seeing the shift in society, he didn't see it when Obama was president and he is still not seeing it under trump if he had he would have went to school and upgraded his education on clean energy which this whole country has been trying to shift towards for last idk 15 years. Instead he sat his fat ass at home and waited and waited and waited and complained for now almost 12 years and did nothing to educate himself. So his solution to getting coal jobs back is to vote for trump who still hasn't brought back any of those jobs back bcuz we are moving forward with clean energy. This man is the definition of stupid
