    I remember reading Simon Pegg's autobiography and that observation about Nic Frost's character being kept as a zombie is spot on to Simon's intention with him being a symbol of the inner child still being kind of there

    @@BoleDaPole "Dude thinking he's Shakespeare or something" damn, tell me you've never read a Shakespeare play without telling me you've never read a Shakespeare play. There wasn't even a single lewd insinuation in this comment, nor was it written in iambic pentameter. Were you thinking of his sonnets? That wouldn't make much sense either. What specifically was it about this comment that make you think of Shakespeare? Which word was too big for you? Was it "autobiography?" Maybe "intention?" Was Shakespeare just the first writer in the canon you could think of when a person on the internet making a basic textual observation ruffled your feathers? You having that reaction is really silly. People came here to think about a topic that interests them and you're trying to talk them out of it. You can be lazy, but don't be an advocate against thinking things through.

    I'm inclined to believe Hot Fuzz using a lot of cuts in it's action scenes is meant to be satire. Taken 3 has 15 different cuts on one 6 second shot of Liam Neeson climbing over a single fence. If anything, Edgar didn't go hard enough with the cuts. Also, got to say, the shift from motion graphics to live action camera work has come along nicely. Really dig the work you put into the presentation while keeping the motion graphics on the side. Your videos still have a vibe unique to you.

    What i love about Hot Fuzz is it's also a stark subversion of the "country-mouse/big-city" story or a Hallmark movie. A career-person from the city is assigned to a quaint small-town. The city-person is put-off by their cheery rural-values but comes to soften with the help of a new friend/love-interest. All with a city take-over happening in the background. Normally, the small-town is quaint, friendly, and kind like Maybury from the Andy Griffith Show. Hot Fuzz makes its small-town confining, dull, and fake-cheery. Their biggest crimes are mundane like an escaped-swan or an unsolicited living-statue. The townsfolk are obsessed with this appearance, to the point where they're willing to murder anyone who even adds a little bit of mud to that image. Hallmark movies make small-towns look like great places to live. Hot Fuzz makes them look like the exact opposite.

    it's kinda funny but technically is both, I mean, angel does soften by his cheery friend. He becomes less structured and stops following rules so much, wich, in hindsight, is kinda of a terrible progression by him being a cop. But, you know, those old town folks did in fact deserve it.

    Edgar Wright is my number one favourite movie director ever. The World's End is so underrated. It's the best one (to me) in the cornetto trilogy and its a shame that the film isn't that much appreciated by fans. Scott Pilgrim also has a special place in my heart. I can watch Edgar's films again and again without getting bored. He made me fall in love with comedy movies

I remember all dialogs but I only learned about its gags and references recently since I'm not a native speaker, I'm asian, and their culture came like 10-20 years late to my area 😂. But I love HotFzz and World's End more now that I've watched them.

    I think the ending of Scott Pilgrim works perfectly because it shows two characters willing to get over the past actions of each other and try again. The whole reason all of Romana’s past relationships are shallow are not because of how they started but because of how and when they ended. Ramona always seemed to give up on a relationship the second they got difficult or complicated, which is when they never developed depth. Scott and Romano’s relationship started in a very typical but genuine way. Guy asks her out, go on a few dates, see they have chemistry etc. their development gets halted when Scott has to fight the exs which is all a metaphor for dealing with the baggage of the past that Ramona has also failed to deal with herself. Once that is over, if they were to break up, it would start all over again and all that work of coming to terms with each other’s past actions would be wasted. The characters are not getting married in the end, they just want to keep trying with their relationship and see how it develops, something and Scott have not done with their past relationships. I think it does highlight their growth as characters well and Ramona clearly likes Scott’s vibe and personality and they have chemistry. This was better established in the comic but I don’t view the ending as Scott “winning a girlfriend” or him “being entitled to a girlfriend” because he is bringing something to the table that Ramona likes. She is also getting something out of the relationship.

  • @bugjams

    @bugjams

    6 ай бұрын

    Exactly. Saying Scott doesn't deserve Ramona is kind of missing the point - they deserve each other. They're both absolute messes of adults who still have growing up to do. Other characters mention multiple times that they're made for each other.

  • @clayjack9969

    @clayjack9969

    6 ай бұрын

    @@bugjams yeh exactly. Also they have grown enough as people to give a relationship a try and have done a lot of work to get over each others baggage. It’s the perfect ending. If it ended without them trying to make it work it would feel like the end of TLOUS 2, something he has also talked about on this channel. It would feel very unsatisfying, like the whole movie built up to nothing. I think the movie does enough to justify the ending as well. I think his interpretation comes from putting too much value on Ramona and relationships as a whole. Scott doesn’t get girls throwing themselves at him or unimaginable riches through a big music contact or something. He just gets to try a relationship again with someone who justifiably wants to do the same thing.

  • @MarioGMan25

    One thing wrt Last Night in Soho -i there is something to say about how the horror hits differently if you're a woman who has ever been in those circumstances (being drugged, being alone in a car with a stranger, being at a bar when some stranger older man starts talking to you). I often hear that Soho isn't really scary / horror and I get it... but Wright did a great job in other respects. Also the lighting / dreamy atmosphere made a lot more sense when i read that he was drawing from Italiahn horror and specifically Argento / Suspiria and its use of stylized colors.

    I don’t love Soho and it got worse the more I thought about it but I respect the hell out of Wright for listening to his main criticism of poorly written female characters and then turning around and writing his first female lead. Definitely shows that he doesn’t have a massive ego or sexism issue and is willing to push himself as an artist and do things that are outside his comfort zone. I just wish he would stop toning down his signature style that was so present in the cornetto trilogy and Scott pilgrim in order to seem more “mature and serious.” People love, watch, discuss and remember Scott Pilgrim way more then The King’s Speech which is what won best picture the year Scott Pilgrim came out. That’s what really matters. He’s never going to find fulfillment in pinning for the approval of the Academy.

    there was a comparison to Wes Anderson near the beginning because of recognizable style, which I get and agree with. But I always see Wright as more similar to Dan Harmon because of reliance/focus/manipulation of genres, tropes, and references. The biggest difference between Harmon and Wright to me is maybe crassness and length, since Harmon does his pastiches in episodes and Wright does his pastiches in movies.

    loved the video as I am a huge edgar wright fan! there were somethings in his movies that I was not clear about though that you made clear to me in the worlds end I saw him at the end of the movie kind of, back where he started because he is literally with the younger versions of his friends and not his actual friends which I'd hope he reconciled with, (especially andy), but now you made it more clear saying hes fighting for the rights of blanks which is kind of noble when you think about it i will keep defending last night in soho, I enjoy that movie every time I watch it it is technically brilliant and I do like the script, at the very least, for me, it had more interesting female characters, because he is lacking so hard in that department I am with you on the scott pilgrim sentimental rack, it means a lot to me, and continues to mean a lot to me and it was the first movie that made me more of a film bro for sure haha again great video I love what you do!

    I found Kevin Spacey’s death in Baby Driver to be so poetic because his character’s arc mirrors his own career. He started on top of the world, then he realized his career is going to be over, and because of that, he’s going to go out in a blaze of glory.

    Respectfully, I do not think Wright knows how to write women. I think that is what kills Last Night in Soho and it is visible with Ramona, Deborah and most of his female love interests...

    Worlds End is easily my favorite movie of all time, its so freaking good, literally everything about it. It feels like a movie that says so much but doesn't ever feel bloated. at leas in my opinion his magnum opus.

    Thank GOD someone made a video on this subject. I have been goosing for a decent cornetto trilogy essay that doesn't wank itself silly with film studies dropout critique and fawning over use of colour theory that the writer doesn't understand. Succinct and thoughtful. Thank you.
