​@@liberide2192 it's not common but I am sure you can do a literal translation. In German media a literal translation for school shooting is used. There is nothing special about combining the words school and shooting, it can be done in any language.

I believe most Europeans have the same/similar opinion about America and Americans, but it’s not that we don’t like you, it’s the common arrogance, ignorance, and unfounded need for superiority most people experience (myself included) that set us off, which is unfortunate. With that being said it is EXTREMELY refreshing to finally see someone open-minded and down to earth, and I do not doubt that people will be gravitating toward you since most Europeans are curious to know more about your culture. That's also why cheerleaders and the commercial ads are such a big thing - they're simply part of the show. And when everything is just a show and everyone knows it's just a show, then people are less likely to hurt each other over it.

European football-fans are quite good at pretending that football is not just a big commercial circus over here. And yet... it is ;-)

To outside observers, US daily news appears entirely dominated by politics. In Europe, from the UK to Greece, criminal trials cannot be covered in media between the day someone is committed (arraigned) and the end of the trial. Elected politicians cannot get involved in the judicial process, or they'd lose their jobs. It seems there is no independence in the US judiciary, but everything is politics.

Generally, unless editors can prove there is a public interest in doing so, newspapers are not allowed to print: • information which might identify a victim of sexual assault; • information which identifies a friend or relative of a criminal, who is not at all relevant to the court case • information which is protected by reporting restrictions or might be in contempt of court.

@@aidyg My son, a practicing barrister in England and Wales, assures me that there are broad restrictions on what the press may discuss concerning possible evidence, details of the prosecution case, personal details of possible witnesses, on-air debates on guilt or innocence, and any personal issues concerning court officials' families. Sub judice rules are very strict in both British judicial systems, in order to protect the integrity of the courts' proceedings. Never once in my 70+ yrs have I seen a government minister or an officer of Parliament discuss the merits of a criminal case before trial, except when they were a witness, the victim, or the accused, or a member of their families.

As an American who once lived in Amsterdam...I agree with ALL those comments.

Yes - Europeans, Australians, Canadians are so much more informed about and caring about the rest of the world than most Americans I'm sure you will have an amazing time in the Netherrlands and look forward to seeing it.

The thing with cheerleading, is that looking hot is part of the sport. It's a beauty pageant with acrobatics, and don't get me wrong those are difficult tandem acrobatics, but it is so painfully obvious that one of it's primary goals is to be eye candy. To be frank though, I find the whole concept of pep rallies and cheerleading utterly weird, but that's just my opinion. It's just kinda wild thst you invented a whole sport because of the frequent breaks in almost all American sports, especially American Football.

Hello Joel. I toured US for three months and loved it. I went to Netherlands for work and found them very direct, but as a blunt Yorkshireman myself I cannot really say that was anything new. If anything, having gone to Netherlands for work, I would have said they are equally as open to the charge of over confidence in their own ways being best.

I agree that other countries know more about our country and how it is works than we do. When I travel overseas for my job, I hear how we judge others, we aren't tolerant of anyone who is different, and we think we are better than other countries. They also say, we come to their country and complain how their country doesn't measure up to the US, we are arrogant, we try to make them speak English in their country, and we feel we should not have to respect their country laws and rules, just because we are Americans. This is sad how unaware we are how the rest of the world sees us or if we are aware, we don't care.

In soccer competitions things indeed can get rough, that's why they seperate the fans of the teams. This doesn't happen in the other sports though. And hooliganism has nothing to do with sports. These are kind of fight clubs who affiliate with a soccer club but are just into fighting. They often don't even watch the game but provoke the other fight club (or the police ;-)). When we talk about America, a lot comes down to the political aspects in supreme court. How Roe vs Wade became undone and creates so much misery! The USA are becoming a very harsh environment for women. We truly do not understand why the justice system is influenced by politics on such a large scale. And why the "land of the free" chooses to subject itself to religion so much.

Love your videos and you will survive in the Netherlands just fine. I live in the south and we are "too Belgian" in the other parts of NL and "too Dutch" (I hate it when they call me Hollander in Belgium 😉 ) when we visit Belgium but we survive just fine and so will you. And if you visit NL and want to explore Maastricht or even the "Dutch Disneyland" Efteling just give a shout out 😀 Locals almost always know best

When you wanna travel to Europe, think about the night Trains. An old European thing that made his comeback last years. And it's nice because it doesn't need travel time

Slowly but surely there is more awareness among Americans for what is going on outside their country. I think this platform has contributed hugely to that development, as it's a lot easier now to share experiences and opinions. I think the next challenge will be to separate the BS from the useful. "First hand" experiences are always limited and subjective but they are a good start to opening one's mind to what's out there. (edit: language)

Kindergarten? No, there may be some schools that do that, and kids might pick it up from tv and games, but most Dutchies learn English from when they are 12 years old (middelbare school)

My advice would be if your in the Netherlands, dont just go to Amsterdam, go outside the tourist places. Go to Breda, Nijmegen, Arnhem, zwolle and so. There are so many more beautiful places and not so expensive as the tourist places everyone goes to. Enjoy your stay.

I don't know how long you will stay in the Netherlands, but I hope long enough that being honest is not intended to be offensive. But you seem like an open person who doesn't follow the rules but lets everything happen and then decides!!

I think most people judge others from a perspective of stereotypes and you cant blame them if they dont know much about you in the first place exept for the news who only reports on drama. People only treat you well when they know you personally so you shouldn't take the critisims of these people too much to heart

the people interviewed here live in a mostly heterogeneous society compared to the states, if they had the large diversity as america does especially in the cities, then they would be just as divided if not moreso, the problem I suppose with america is that its at the forefront of alot of things, specifically because of the wide mix of ethnicities and thoughts, it is dealing with these types of clashes and challenges within the population first before other countries around the world would inevitably have to deal with them, once their population becomes less heterogenous through mass immigration - everyone praises japan, and south korea and even the dutch as seen here, imagine if they had the differences in population makeup and background we had, they for sure would not be having it as easy as they are now where everyone in their society just goes along with the mass opinion on everything

Well, not sure if you have ever been in the Netherlands? Almost a quarter of the population is an immigrant or has a parent who is an immigrant. (And yes I fact checked that.) And that is of course not taking in account third generation immigrants.

I think in general every country has their good and bad side, good and bad people, you can't judge a person by what country they are from. I met Americans who were down to earth, awesome and very nice people. Yes the interest in the world can be better, but America is so big tbh you dont need to know a lot about the rest of the world, you got almost everything there. Anyway hope u have a nice stay here in our tiny country and im sure you'll get along with almost everybody, as i said u got aholes in every country, but most are pretty decent.

I feel that the English language has created a cultural ghetto in the USA. They turn strongly inward, few people know about external things. Because of the size, a different American culture is emerging. That's why I'm happy for this channel!

The main reason why many Europeans have such a strong opinion on the USA, is that the American culture is not alien to us, we all watch US movies and series and even news stations because many here speak English as a second language and because US politics matter to us as well since they are currently the only remaining superpower. While on the flip side, many Americans are totally oblivious about the rest of the world, not just because they are ignorant or don't care, but just because their country is huge compared to European countries and the concept of speaking another language is not as common as it is here. There's enough Americans who never left their own state, let alone the country. Over here in Europe going to another country with a different language, different culture and different politics, is seldom more than just a few hours drive, or even hop on a train. As for the political situation in the US with the conservative and liberals hating each other: that's what you get for having a 2-party system that's so cemented, that new parties with fresh new ideas don't stand a chance. To be honest, you can't even really call that democracy when all you get to choose from is your personal lesser of two evils. Just my 2 cents, from a Dutch living in Germany

The rumour about Americans beeing stupid I think comes from decades ago when it was a big thing in EU media that they couldn't point out their own country on a map of the World. They thought it was like Russia because it is a big country. Well I like JPS videos. Greetings to him from Sweden.

Americans have always been divided, when I the media say, oh they are so divided, it reminds me either they haven't got a clue or they are pushing a narrative. The Dutch have some divisions. The farmers just waged a major protest against snobbish politicians who want to hamper how farmers provide food. France just had major protests against the government, or have we already forgotten. Spanish society is so divided they have at several separatist movements beyond the Catalans. In the 1930s French society was so divided that there was a phrase "Better Hitler than Blum." Leon Blum was a very nice, solid, incorruptible socialist politician who was Prime Minister for a while. (Those people ate their words.) And I love these European countries who only 80 years ago couldn't wait to see Americans and British + Canadians. And until 1991 they were afraid that Americans would close the bases and go home. Before you judge people, you had better see for yourselves. Some of them talked about racism! Until the recent increase of migrants the only European countries that were remotely diverse (meaning non European countries) were the United Kingdom and to a lesser extent France. America has always been diverse and because human beings tend to like to be with like, it has caused problems. But these countries are no where near as diverse as the USA. I just looked up some stats. The Netherlands have a population of around 17.7 million people. In the United States our Asian-American population is just over 24 million people. There are more people of Scottish descent in the USA than in Scotland. I know the United States has some major problems, but these folks are judging us based upon news reports and incomplete data. Most countries used to have the ability to purchase guns, until more ivory tower politicians decided ordinary folks shouldn't be allowed to have personal protection while politicians are allowed. And I guarantee you that everything these folks have heard about Trump is based upon half truths and half sentences. I know he is not a politician, but that is part of his strange appeal to people who are sick to the back teeth of politicians. He has several times in his career been honored for his help to minority communities, including by Corretta Scott King, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton (but that was when he was a democrat). He was close friends with Oprah Winfrey for decades. Hilary Clinton said he should run for president, I've seen the interview. But then he became a republican candidate -gasp European leaders don't like him because he called them all out on their lack of commitment to the NATO Alliance, which in the past few years has suddenly become so popular among the EU nations that thought they could have an EU army and send the Yanks home. Only the UK, the other most hated nation in Europe, meets its obligations...barely.

"Joel" can be usefully used to counter the epithet "Trump" when asked for one's views on the USA.

Polarised Politics is not unique to AMERICA,,, it’s everywhere,,,,, but I’m convinced that no good can come from this kind of research and then travel with a preconceived idea of what you think might happen. Or how people might think of you as an AMERICAN. you will be judged on your natural attributes,,,not your passport…. You are a good communicator and very personable so go with an open mind.

I find it funny that everybody they say that they eat a lot of food, but I think that german people eat more, but its all fresh.

America has a lot of great things but its people are afraid to open their mouths to make it even more great!!

As a dutchman i really do not understand America anymore. I've been there a couple of times albeit some decades ago. But the devision is played out by everything, Media, multi media, schools and churches. Of 400 milion Americas are Trump and Biden really the only options? You can either choose bad or worse, and nuances are off the table. Either you are a liberal woke communist or you are racist christian extremist. Holland is definitely not perfect, but having multiple parties to choose from, ending in coalitian forming is a better form of democracy.

As soon as a Dutchie starts talking about Donald the Clown counterask: who's gonna be your Next PM? The Great Blond Leader Wilders (pronunciation: "Willders") ? The hate in The Netherlands is getting more and more extreme as well, though it's not as bad as in the USA - yet.

Irish here. My first thoughts of the USA would also be extreme division, especially within politics. So much so that I feel like for too many people and politicians consistently put party before country. That and paranoia/fear, it strikes me that there is an overwhelming culture of fear and distrust of your fellow man.

Thanks, this was very interesting! I've been to the US on holidays four times, and twice on business. And I've been all over western Europe, as well as Australia and several countries in Asia. I've lived in northern Europe for over 50 years. In Europe we see the US as "bigger is better", "mine's better than yours" etc, we have the image which Americans have given us. I'm a Formula One fan, have been all my life, and the US is going to turn it into entertainment, instead of a sport. There are so many YT uploads about "What Americans think about ......". Who cares? Hope you enjoy your visit to the Netherlands, you'll enjoy it. And you seem to be a person who listens rather than talks - that's very un-American!

I agree with a lot of criticism on the U.S. but the rascism we have, I'd argue is only highlighted because of how much of a melting pot this country is. I would wager a good amount of european nations have a greater degree of bigotry but it doesnt get highlighted because they are much more homogenous.

Hypocrites. Many people may have strong opinions about the US, while at the same time american fashion, music, movies and TV series are more popular than anything else. A lot of trends that we follow originated in the US, like christmass, Halloween, Black Friday, 420. People sometimes forget how heavily our way of life is influenced by all kinds of things from the US. Despite some cultural differences we're still a western society with western vallues. And when it comes to politics, our society is also heavily devided at the moment. Where you have Trump... we got Wilders (Netherlands). Which is kinda like the same in some sense. So people here may have strong opinions about the US, but we do not do much better ourselves at the moment. ;)

I do agree with that lady about the cheer leading though, I find it sexist. I’ve never seen male cheer leaders!! Do they exist???
