These Designs Were Pitched for the World Trade Center Site.

Фильм және анимация

These are more than 20 designs pitched for the World Trade Center site. Many were designed by the who's who of the architecture world of the early 2000s. While many had ideas for what should be built at ground zero it was eventually narrowed down a few proposals shown later in the video till finally Daniel Libeskinds Freedom tower was selected in 2002. A year later he would team up with David Childs of SOM to revise the design. Childs would evolve the design in 2005 to what would eventually be built with the complex sticking to Libeskinds masterplan. The Tribute of light concept would eventually be realized yearly as an art installation off site ontop of the battery park parking garage.

Same here. I just wish they made the two towers of light a permanent part of the site because that was the most powerful post 9/11 reminder of what happened especially when you saw it nightly on the news... EVEN as a Canadian, I can sympathize and understand the desire to keep the site clean of buildings. It seems weird after a tragedy of this scale that you'd want to build anything at all near such a "mass grave" but what they did do in the end was the best solution.. Build around the OG tower footprints and make the waterfalls a feature of gathering, reflection and yes mourning...

Anything that basically was hollow, half built, wonky in structure as to even suggest collapse or deviancy from normal operations, or came up shorter than the originals is doa and it’s a small miracle we got wtc 1 as is. And most of this goes for wtc 2 proposals as well. What the hell was “spread”? Like the splat of a jumper. Office da is a starter design I like but yea…. Liebeskind was chosen for a good reason. The grand majority of these designs are absolutely terrible. No sense of proportion or harmony in relation to their environment, and even worse is that they don't respect Yamasaki 's vision of human scale. The concept of Twin Towers 2 sounded cool at least. My personal take would be similar but a bit modernized. Make twin towers but with materials inspired by One WTC. glass buildings, with similar scale and floor count (or with 90-105 floors as the sweet spot). But now that One WTC exists , I'd really love to see Foster+Partners original concept for WTC2, which is almost universally considered the most aesthetically pleasing version. Unfortunately that doesn't seem to happen due to politics and the complicated situation of tenants in nyc right now.

This is one of the most fascinating videos yet because of just how many formal proposals were made, never mind their complexity and buildability... OR controversy... Never was there more feet-dragging and controversy over this site and rightly so. I do think what was built as probably the Greatest compromise in architecture known to date and that's probably a good thing that they "Mean Girled" the site by splitting it up between architects and phases so that they do look cohesive and yet distinct and with the addition of housing soon will be a truly 24-7 global district for the ages... As a journalist AND skyscraper fan seeing this project slowly come back to life over the last 20+ years since that awful day has been fascinating. It was also a cool 30th birthday to be in NYC on a Circle Line Boat Tour the day they lifted the final piece of the spire into place...

My personal choice was the skeleton version of Childs/Libeskind just before the final design was locked. I loved the open air steel lattice work which reminds me of both the Eiffel Tower and Beijing's Bird's Nest... It brings you all the height and drama of the original twins with none of the structural or safety complexity of having visitors and tenants above a certain height... Much like China has now locked into its national building codes after a few record-breaking towers with great designs but not well thought out economics or safety plans...

My personal pick would be the initial plan by Foster and Partners. I love how it keeps with the idea of twin towers, but it doesn't just copy the original design, it has it's own unique and sleek geometric design that gives hints to the buildings that once were. Simply beautiful.

I would have made Twin Towers but fully reflective glass and have a light system that can change for different occasions, with a special one only appearing on the anniversary of 9/11. The only difference in placement would have been using the empty space between the original towers footprint, so they can still have a memorial with pools like today. And instead of OWTC have the museum built there.

  • @loganbaileysfunwithtrains606

Nah special light system just means some ignorant person would use it to fly something like the Palestinian flag and be completely tone deaf at what that means in context to the buildings

I’d love to see the different old Chicago World Trade Center proposals at the NYC WTC site. One of them looks really similar to the OWTC too They were much bigger than the Twins and having one bigger and taller building would’ve been better than one same-sized building like OWTC. It feels incomplete. Also I love that version of the Tribute in Light and how it actually shines up from the footprints. I’ll never understand why they didn’t do it like that

The visual impact of the twin towers was not only that they were the tallest buildings, but that there were two. The new single WTC 1 gets lost in the mix of other buildings. The single building leaves no visual effect even though it is taller than the originals (1776’).

They honestly should have just rebuilt both towers exactly as they were but with updated safety standards. Would some have seen this as insensitive? Sure. But it also would have been a great message of defiance.

  • @setusername8275

What really annoys me about most of these designs is that apparentely these architects are much more bothered about "proving themselves" by creating the most "unique" (actually ridiculous) designs and not give a damn about respecting Yamasaki's original design, which has become one of the, if not -the- most recognisable landmarks in the US. I thnk what those architects and also lots of (probably mostly younger) people, who like to shit on the original Twin Towers' design don't get is how genius the original complex was. Yes, one of the original towers by itself would've been rather boring looking, but the way both were positioned together with that certain offset made them so interesting to look at, because they'd look different from any angle, even though both towers were pretty much just two mostly indentical, tall boxes. These towers were really complimenting each others' simple design and thus created an interesting design alltogether. For me personally, the original World Trade Center has always been the embodiment of beauty in simplicity. And so, in my opinion the only reasonable solution would've been the Twin Tower II.
