Thermometer Review of Meater, Meatstick, Air Probe & Yummy

Can you ditch the wires and have one (or several) of these wireless thermometer probes hanging on your fridge for quick grab-and-go accurate readings in the kitchen or out at the grill? And if so, which one of these devices would earn the title for ‘Best Wireless Meat Thermometer Probe’?
We felt it was finally time to gather all the wireless meat thermometer probes we could find. We define a wireless probe as a meat probe that communicates via Bluetooth to send ambient and internal readings directly to your phone without the need for a digital base station. No wiring needed - simply a probe, charging station, and your phone.
Here’s the devices we tested and reviewed that fit the bill:
- AirProbe 2
- Meater + review
- MeatStick X
- Yummly
For more information, read the full article on our website: smokingmeatgeeks.com/wireless....
Video Timeline:
0:00 - Introduction
0:51 - The Probes
1:22 - Setting Up the Applications
2:45 - Using the Wireless Probes
4:02 - Accuracy
4:40 - Winners & Losers
Each of these devices probes, with the exception of Yummly’s, can be used in combination with multiple probes which report to a single device. Yummly mentioned in Aug 2020 that they were in the process of a software update that would allow for multiple simultaneous probes but have yet to release any such capabilities. The Meater boasts an estimator feature which we look at when reviewing the Meater + in this video.
It’s time to see if these probes can deliver on their promise to provide accurate readings at high temperatures for an extended duration.
It sounds too good to be true: a device stuck to the side of the fridge you could grab as easy as reaching for a kitchen knife. Shove it in cut of meat, and then toss it in a grill, smoker, or oven, and get all the data sent directly to your phone. All of this without dealing with a drawer full of probes, wires, and base station(s). My wife hates that I have a drawer in her kitchen dedicated to wires and electronic gadgets. These probes aim to change that.
To find out if they can deliver, we run them through a series of tests over a long day. Here’s the tests we conducted:
- Accuracy: For this we conducted three tests using a reference thermometer as the control against which to judge each of the probes. The most controlled test was conducted by creating a warm bath set to 140° using the Anova sous vide cooker. The next test was to see how the probes performed when being used to monitor a roast in the oven set to 450°F for the first leg of the cook then turned down to 325°F for the remaining duration. The final test was to place each of the probes in a pot of boiling water.
- Application: This was a collection of all the experiences we had with the application from installation, setup, in-cook, and post cooking throughout our testing. We focused on how intuitive each application was, the available features, and what it was like to navigate them.
- Range: To test their wireless Bluetooth communication ranges we paired each of the stations to our phones and left the probes on the counter and walked outside counting paces to estimate if their advertised ranges provided an accurate look at what one could expect when using the probe in a real-world scenario with obstructions between the probe (or in this case, between the repeaters that are installed in the charging station) and the paired mobile device.
Watch and see if these thermometer probes can be trusted for smoking your favorite meat, grilling or using them in an oven.
Sidenote: The AirProbe 2 advertises it can be used in an InstaPot or air fryers but we did not test it in these environments as there were several stipulations as to how it should be used which were not exactly clear to us when we conducted this test series.

Just received the Meater Block and have used to for 4 cooks so far. It nailed them all! A ribeye steak, Rotisserie Chicken, Try-tip, all three on my charcoal grill. Lastly a whole chicken in my stick burner off-set smoker! Again, nailed it and it was great to be able to see when I needed to add wood from inside the house! So far, nothing but praise!

One question I never see answered in the reviews but is very relevant to me; Is it also possible with the Meatstick X to use a phone to setup a wifi bridge and monitor your cook from the cloud? This is possible for meater but I cant find anything on ot for the Meatstick except for their pricey Wifi-bridge product.

Hey guys, Great episode with giving some good advice on wireless thermometers. While the information was solid, as a professional videographer, I found many flaws in your production and sometimes, the video was difficult to watch. So, to help you, I wanted to provide a few tips on how you can make your content more engaging for your viewers. 1. Cue in and out times: At 0:44 and again at 0:51 the intro/logo cuts in and out mid sentence, meaning it looks like Jacob was in the middle of a conversation when the scene cut to the logo. This type of cut is messy and makes you look like unprofessional amateurs, and I am sure you do not want to be viewed as that. Finish your sentence, pause for a half second before you cut or change frames. Do multiple takes if you have to but try not to cut from one frame to another while you are speaking. 2. Focus: Are you setting the camera up in manual focus? If so, do you have someone to help pull focus while you are in front of it? Here, at 1:59 this whole scene is out of focus and it was kinda hard to watch. If you have a decent camera that was made after 2019, it should have a 'Peaking' feature on it which will help with ensuring that your focus is on point. I am happy to help you with this if you need more info. If you are working solo when filming this scene, perhaps you could consider switching to autofocus instead? 3. Colour Correction: It is great that you are mixing up your videos with multiple camera angles, nice work! However, between 2:53 - 2:57 can you see how you have two completely different colour patterns across the two cameras? It looks like the first scene (side camera) is shooting in RAW and that the second scene (front on camera) has been given a bad LUT/filter or has had some poor colour grading added to it. Are they two different camera brands that you are using here? Usually, every camera model will have its own default colour balance settings and many of them are very different to each other. If you do not match these when using multiple cameras, you end up with two completely different colour patterns as shown between these mentioned time slots. I would suggest that you try to correct the default RAW colour patterns in each camera first and try to match both camera colour corrections to as close as possible. You can do this in post but this will mean a lot more editing time for you. 4. Distracting items: At 3:03, there is a noticeable round black thing (it looks like a microphone) on the bottom right-hand corner of the screen. I noticed this and for about 10 seconds, was trying to figure out what it was and because of this, I completely stopped listening to what Jacob was saying. It is good that the frame is nice and straight but distracting items will draw your viewers focus there and could disconnect from the information that you are giving them. Another example of this is at 3:14 where you can see the edge of the table and there is a small gap there. Had you moved the camera an inch to the left and cut out the gap, this would have been better and less distracting. 5. Fading: Fading from one scene to another is fine, just be mindful of when to do it. At 3:32, Nathan goes in for a big 'ol wipe of the nose or a brush of his top lip, not the most attractive image people want to see when you are dealing with food. Directly after that, you introduce a fade overlay. Perhaps you could have introduced this fade before he started lifting his hand to rub his face? Food for thought. 6. Take two: Surely you did multiple takes during the making of this video right? Well, just as the distracting items is a no-no, so are notes and pieces of paper with the questions that you are going to ask. Hide that *&^$%^ like your best meat rub in the pantry! While the notes page is clearly visible on the table, at 3:03, you can see Nathan glancing at it for a brief second right before the fade out. Could you have faded out earlier to prevent showing him even looking at it? Sure, I guess you could, but that note page should not even be on the table in the first place, in plain view for everyone to see. Again, this goes back to the whole amateur thing, you're not 12. Rehearse your lines, take time to practice and improve your presence on camera. 7. Reflections: At 4:12, you can see the downlight from the ceiling shining onto your phone. As you move your phone around, the light jiggles all across the phone screen and is very distracting. Reflections are the worst and the easiest way around this is to position yourself holding the phone and have a second person look thought the camera for any reflections before you start recording. If you are filming on your own and have no help, then film near a large window (with lots of natural, daytime light) and turn the ceiling lights off. 8. Introductions: It was only at the very end of the video, as it was fading to black, that you told your audience your names, Nathan and Jacob. While Jacob did give his name in the beginning, it was so short and so fast, I did not even hear it the first time around. You have gone through the trouble of putting effort into having a swish animated logo, and cool highlighted transitions between topics, you even went so far as to add in animations for water temperatures and little, funny, angry faces (4:34), yet you do not introduce yourselves at the beginning of the video (when you are both on-screen) or ever put your names (animated or text) up on the screen. Audiences want to feel connected to you and usually, in most countries, a handshake and a name is a good place to start. You have some great content here and you helped me to decide on getting the right wireless device (I ended up with the Meater +), so thank you. I hope that in return, I was able to repay the favour by helping you tweak your video skills so that your next video can be even better and more engaging for your viewers! Keep up the great work! :)

Rein, thank you for the time you took to review the scenes and provide much needed feedback. Some of the problem areas you annotated we are are aware of, but hey, being on camera is much hard, some can pull it off better than others. Being able to deliver content straight though in one take (that is meaningful) is challenging for me (Jacob). As a result, many of the hard cuts are basically us trying to make the best of a bad situation in post. However, there are several things you mention that are within our control to improve on such as lighting, focus, and the set; as per your request we will look to improve on these to provide better content for you and the reset of our audience.
