Thermalright Macho Rev.B and Le Grand Macho RT Review

Ғылым және технология

A double review checking out the Thermalright Macho Rev.B and Le Grand Macho RT! These are designed for CPU TDPs in excess of 240W, but how does this translate into performance with regards to a 91W 6700K? And can they defeat coolers like the D15S and Dark Rock 4?

    the thing about the large fin spacing in the Macho is that it's better for a) passive operation and b) lower fan speeds due to air friction being non-linear. edit: large fin spacing also helps prevent dust accumulation from nerfing fan performance. quick fan clips mean easier de-dusting.

    Stellar review. I will say: the question I'm trying to answer is which one works best with the current crop of enthusiast 8-core chips, ideally overclocked. The 2700X and 9900K pull ~150W stock and ~250W at a reasonable overclock. To your point earlier: a 6700K at stock voltage in a game test probably isn't much over 75W, so it's not clear if the performance hierarchy is representative.

    Man i dont get tired of watching your videos, really impressive presentation, by far the best reviews i seen of any cooler, and this two thermalright machos was no different. Really enjoyed the testing of the B and A fans, a little confusing but its fine, i got a laugh out of it, again never seen reviews with such dedication as you do them, keep them up, i really hope your channel gets more attention as your work should be seen for more people. Personally in my own testing, Macho RevB and LeGrandMacho are very similar on full rpms, but where the LeGrandMacho wins is at lower rpms, the bigger surface area allow better dissipation under very low rpms, that said, its not a big deal either. To me Macho RevB and Mugen5 are the best coolers at $50, and at $80, the NH-D15 and LeGrandMacho are among the best coolers, weather its worth the extra $30 its up to each user, to me its not worth it, but i can see some situations that might be worth it. One cooler that im going ask you if you could review is the upcoming NH-U12v2, its not out yet, but Noctua showed it at CES2018, saying that it will have the performance of the NH-D15 with a smaller factor, i do think Noctua should send you a sample for free, specially if they watch your super high detail review, impressive video footage, and well presented review.

    Haha, thanks man. The A and B fan testing was so stupid, I double checked the numbers with the documentation and realised I'd mixed them up somewhere along the way. I even had separate containers so that didn't happen... Nice to know these coolers have their performance advantages at other RPM ranges, they've got to be doing something different with all that fin surface area (I'd really like to see how they'd to with the new 9900K or even Threadripper CPUs (although that would need a new mount). I'd really like to introduce half speed testing to the reviews, but time-wise it's not so viable which is just a pain. I've logged down the NH-U12v2 on the cooler list with your name on it, and I look forward to checking it out, any idea when it'll be on the market? I think I actually spoke with Noctua before on review units and they said it's not something they do. But I presume they sponsor videos where they provide a pile of coolers for a project here and there - not something I'll require for quite some time haha. Thanks for the continued support, and I hope you enjoy the Level 20 VT review!

    Great review! I have the HR-02, from 10 years ago mounted on a Core i7-3930K OC at 4.6Ghz 1.385v. While gaming, the hottest core is 71C. With Prime95, it is more like 78-79. I’m trying to get to 4.7-4.9 at around 1.4. As the HR-02 is rated at 200W TDP and the RT at 320, I Think it Will be a Nice upgrade as my CPU at 4.6 is pulling 240W, it will get near 300 at 4.8-4.9.

    Great review! I want to see do a review on the Thermalright True Spirit 140 Power. Its also got a crazy size but in a different way, its super tall! 172mm. Its got 6 heatpipes but theyre bigger than all of the heatpipes you see on these coolers - theyre 8mm instead of the standard 6mm. Just curious to see how such a cooler would hold up compared to these. Plus its got a ridiculous TDP of 360watts which makes me question it :thinking: I suspect that you'll see similar results to the large coolers you already tested. They're all overkill for a relatively low TDP CPU like the 6700k. Gotta test a threadripper or some HEDT intel CPU :P Shits expensive tho

    I have the macho rev b and the macho 120 SBM both are great coolers and thermalright doesn’t get enough respect compared to be quiet or noctua. The macho rev b is a $50 dollar cooler and it cools great and is pretty silent. Im in the market for a cooler on a spare 5820k asus x99 pro rig im building and i thought about the nh-d15, dark rock pro 4, le grand, sythe ninja 5, or maybe another macho rev b or x2. Im just not sure if the le grand will fit the macho rev b was pretty close to my gpu and i have to use the 1st slot for 16x and the only other slot for 16x is 3 and my cables get in the way. The rev b kept it cool at 4.5 ghz and i used it for a 2700x build. I had an h100i v2 with it but the pump died. And i just want to try one of the bigger air coolers and i was leaning on the dark rock pro 4 just because i hate noctua’s colors. But its nice to buy the same family of coolers to have extra mounting hardware. Great video could find much like this on both. Is the macho rev b wider than the dark rock pro, and whats wider the d15 or le grand thanks

    Blooming brilliant! I wanna try 1 of these. I wanted the Rt for a Z590-i iTX but like you pointed out, for mine, I have an open frame but a ledge too close. 15mm above rear I/O or a 5mm lip inward at 12mm high. I remember when ThermalRight gave you an adhesive to stick backplate while you work & a simple "X" folding plate that centers on a nib. But we used to have stiff springs so maybe now you can clamp down better then before. Video was Ace m8. I like the lighting, & colours. That standing case is brilliant as well. I been looking for something like it. ThermalTake? Sound was good but mayb4e just a tad low. (:

    Specs say the RT is a 159mm tall assembly...the drawings on Thermalrights web show the top of the fan matching the height of the cooler protrusions. In your review pic, the fan seems to extend above the cooler stack beyond 159mm. Is this accurate? Can the fan be positioned lower on the cooler stack? Ordering one to fit into a case with 158-159mm clearance.

    There is room to shift it up and down, you can move it below the level of the heat pipes if you need it to. Is there a specific reason you're going for the RT over other coolers? It's certainly a showpiece and has a high TDP ceiling, it would be interesting to know what your use case is.

    Noctua is great but they're pissing me off with having 2 separate versions of coolers, one for Intel and one for AM4 socket. Others have shows that you can have an universal mount and still have good performance...but hey, gotta sell them mounting kits.

  • @AVTechy

    @AVTechy

    5 жыл бұрын

    jake legg It would appear so. However if a few millimetres was added to the fans we were testing it opens the market up, and something better could be found. But as we found with the Le Grand Macho RT, bigger coolers aren't necessarily the most efficient for "low power" CPUs. Noctua have clearly done their research with this, and hence have a reputation for high performance coolers (and the colour brown :P). Last Second Bloomer The AM4 mounting kit situation is a bit annoying, but they will send them out for free with proof of purchase. I can only assume that (at the tine of initial manufacture) they were not included with every cooler since there were so few people using AMD systems it would be a waste of resources, money, and energy to manufacture one for every cooler (knowing a small percentage of people would use them). Do they ship their new cooler designs with AM4 brackets as standard nowadays (if not, they really should)? Ideally we could pick exactly which socket we would use and have only the mounting hardware for that sent out (I don't know about anyone else, but I'd prefer to not manufacture steel components that won't be used). However I get from a convenience standpoint that it would be better to have support for both right out the box. And a Universal mount would do the job perfectly.

    Nothing is more silent than the Mugen 5 but if you want to cool something like a Ryzen 3900 or i9 9900 you have get something bigger to stay silent over years. Something like a Noctua D15S, DarkRock Pro 4 or LG Macho RT and of the big ones the LG Macho is the most silent! A Thermalright True Spirit is even more Silent but it's closely 180mm which only fit in few cases.

  • @AVTechy

    @AVTechy

    5 жыл бұрын

    In all honest it really doesn't matter between the two. Personally I'd go for the Mugen 5 since it's so much easier to manage. The 6700K hits about 110W on Prime 95 which should give you an indication of the cooling performance in comparison to the 8700K (minus two cores of course). The Mugen 5 will have plenty of head room to cool and overclock the 8700K. Gaming should be your highest load on the CPU, I don't think you'll see higher than 50°C with a light fan curve, but you could choose to go for a more aggressive fan curve (anything below 60°C is perfectly reasonable though), or use the money from the saving and add another fan to the cooler for quieter operation. Hope that helped, thanks for the subscription, and I hope you enjoy many videos to come. And of course if you have any more question don't hesitate to ask!

  • @AVTechy

    @AVTechy

    5 жыл бұрын

    No problem, I'm happy to help out :). If it was me I really like the fan that comes with the Mugen 5, and if I wanted to make it look good and I was on a budget I would go for another one of those fans. But if you're not too bothered by looks you can go for pretty much any fan with a "Ball bearing" and matches the general brief of your system. In fact if it was me I wouldn't add another fan since a second fan won't gain you much in terms of thermal performance (CPU coolers don't generate a lot of resistance). But if you wanted to swap the existing fan out then there are some factors to consider. Fans are quite a complex subject compared to how they appear on the surface. There's two levels of performance to take into account - airflow and acoustics. You can go for a fast fan with high airflow and higher noise levels, or a slower fan with less airflow and lower noise levels. You can of course go for a fast fan around 2000rpm and use a fan curve to keep the rpm's low until the system get's really hot. On the whole the noise levels are dictated by the bearing type and the speed of the fan. Or go for a slower fan around 1200rpm and never have to worry about noise levels. To be honest this probably isn't helping :P I'd recommend fan around the 1200 - 2000prm range with a ball bearing (or any variation), and one that has plenty of positive customer reviews. A few good video reviews are great, but a mass of good customer reviews is very valuable, and they don't generally steer anyone far wrong (as long as it's from a trusted site of course). My best advice I can give you is to work with the existing fan that comes with the cooler, and if after using it for a while you realise it has to spin up too fast and becomes really noisy then you should probably look into getting a second fan. Let me know if you have a certain specification of brief for the fans you want, and I can come up with a few suggestions for you if you want. If you wanted to get new fans straight away, would you be looking to go for two new matching fans, or a single fan to replace or add to the existing fan?

    I have. The ninja does a little better than the D15s but not as well as the D15 in thermals. Also, good god is it huge. Also the front fan of the ninja gets in the way of ram just like the D15 but the D15 front fan can be mounted in a way that it sits in front of the ram allowing the front fan to be used for cooling the cpu and also providing cooling to the ram. The ninja fan has a little better clearance over the ram in its intended spot but you can't stretch it past the ram if you need to. In most cases I would go with the D15s or the mugen 5 rev b unless you do some crazy overclocking in which I would recommend the D15. The ninja does look really cood though.

    Good coolers, performance wise. It is largely due to their fans (TY-147), which are one of the best universal (CPU/case) fans on the market. It's a shame they have such shape, which limits their usability... That mounting is more complicated than it needs to be, though, and they're not among the small ones. Mugen 5 is still my favorite of the bunch, being smaller than the rest in that group, cheaper and having great performance.

    Quite right, certainly very capable coolers, but I really haven't got the hardware to put them through their paces. Like you say, their mounting is way too fiddly to compete with other solutions, and their sheer size makes them pretty much pointless for most people to use. I still haven't announced whether I'm using the Mugen 5 or NH-D15S yet. I'll need to get onto that soon.

    @@AVTechy which cooler would you recommend (air) for the i9 9900k and a meg z390 godlike (I can't figure out what case to use since its EATX...need a good air cooler/case combo) any suggestions?

    From what I've reviewed I can recommend the Noctua NH-D15S/NH-D15S and the be quiet! Dark Rock 4/ Dark Rock 4 Pro. I would recommend the Scythe Mugen 5 but I think you'll be better off with a larger cooler. Frankly any coolers that compete with the Dark Rock 4 and NH-D15S will be great coolers, so it's a case of picking the best performer you like the look of.

    Silly millennials... back in my day HSFs attached with spring clips until Intel decided mounting the processor on a glorified Atari cartridge was the thing to do (Pentium II/III/Celery). Honestly, if anyone actually remembers the old clip system, they should also remember the motherboard stabbing that happened when some poor sap's screwdriver slipped out of the slot in the clip. I personally love the screw on systems, I just believe the hardware should be affixed to the HSF base in some way, not free floating for the installer to juggle while tightening multiple screws. A good mounting system now days is as refreshing as a tab on the old style spring bar clips... you didn't have to risk damage from a screwdriver slipping. Lol

    its bad review, cos it was tested on open stand, this cooler show much better results in case with good airflow.

    Yeah these are comparative results on a consistent test bench. If I were to use a case the volume and free airflow area would change with each cooler which would be inconsistent. But we can disregard the entire review as bad based on a disagreement of the testing methodology sure.

    Why are Thermalright fanboys always so salty? They always went full denial when seeing their favorite coolers lose to other brands. I owned True Spirit 140 Power (the one with six 8mm heatpipe) and le grand macho rt, the former is absolute trash, my STOCK 10700k almost thermal throttled under load. The latter is a bit better but still nothing impressive.

    Conclusion: don't buy the Macho rev.B if you have arthritis ravaged hands or are a useless millenial. Otherwise you can grab yourself a 50 dollar cooler than performs on par with 80 dollar noctua and dark rock. With one (1) fan, mind you, while other ones have 2. You can add another one for 15 bucks, I wonder what the performance is then, hmm?

    Or if you want a cooler that's had the edges rounded nicely so they're not sharp. Or has a little more build quality. 2 fans won't make that much difference. I've only ever seen a few degrees knocked off under full load with a second fan. But saying that I've only tested this with the Hyper 212 Evo and Freezer 34 eSports DUO. No disrespect, but I often find arguments aren't strong when the word 'millennial' is used. This cooler could be worth it at $50 sure, but I had to spend £90 to get hold of one of these since there aren't that many this side of the pond. So from my perspective it wasn't worth it at £90, but £50... sure, pretty good.

    @@AVTechy You are the one who brought up millenials in your video. In any case, the reason you gave not to buy this cooler is pretty silly. We can see in the video it took you whole 10 seconds to lay the parts on top of each other. Maybe that equates to minute or 2 when you have to check the instructions. It's not silly to bring it up, mind, as it is an inconvenience thermalright could do something about. But enough to not recommend the cooler? That's taking it way too far. PS. I believe silent pc review tested earlier revision of this cooler with 2 fans and gave it high praise in that configuration.

    @@arpakyna arpakyna Sorry, I thought you were being serious about the millennial's comment, I certainly wasn't in my video. The reasons I gave were things that were inconvenient, and weren't present in other coolers. If I wanted to install these coolers in an upright case it would be a huge pain in the butt. Whereas I can install the NH-D15S upright no problem. With all the parts that need assembling, inside a case if a couple of the parts dropped out into a complete build as a post build upgrade, it could be annoying to have to deal with. Again these aren't frustrations found in other products. The other coolers also have a higher build quality, are smaller, and have a nicer finish on the whole. These coolers certainly have the potential to perform better than other smaller coolers with two fans since they are so large, but price to performance wise I don't think there's much in it. But for those who just want performance then it couldn't hurt to add a second. Anyway, the frustrations and lack of build quality in comparison to other coolers, and the minimal performance differences mean that I wouldn't recommend these over other offerings. Just my opinion, and you are of course entitled to have a different one.

    I wish you would slow down a bit. You talk and act like you're in such a hurry, but really why? Most of us are going to spend a lot of time researching a product, and you do your viewers a disservice by skipping over pertinent information. You showed us that the RT cooler hangs over IO ports on a mini ITX motherboard, but what about the rev. B? What does it look like?
