THEREMIN - Over The Rainbow

Музыка

This song was written by Harold Arlen for the 1939 MGM classic THE WIZARD OF OZ. It is widely believed to be the most loved and enduring popular song of the 20th century. It is played here on the 1929 RCA theremin that once belonged to the late Hollywood thereminist, Dr. Samuel Hoffman.

Yep. First became popular in Hollywood during the 40s to accompany scenes depicting disturbing dreams, hallucinations, etc. In the 50s the theremin began to be popularly used in sci-fi and horror films. One of the first to use it was the 1953 science fiction movie It Came From Outer Space. Cool instrument that can really create an eerie atmosphere.

The high-tech instruments of the past are so much more magical than what we got now. It's not difficult for a computer to make a song these days, but playing an invisible violin atop a cupboard in the 1920's must have been spectacular and awe-inspiring, just like it still is.

Lev Theramin could have simply built the instrument with a sine wave and it would have been pretty good, but he took it to the next level and designed a unique waveform with an organic character and beauty to rival any physical instrument. The timbre sounds like a blend of human voice and violin. Even without the expressiveness of the ingenious control interface, the raw sound is a masterpiece.

to my understanding their was revived interest in the 60's when Brian Wilson of the beach boys incorporated it into the top 40 hit, "good vibrations," but the popularity was short lived, my guess is that the Moog synthesizer which was all the hype at the time was able to produce similar sounds causing the theremin to fall into obscurity and as a novelty being as it is difficult to play, much practice and completely "by ear," many are lost without sheet music and other points of reference.
