@@Vorance if you ask me, this looks like some weird prototype DS Lite. My original DS broke in half because of the lackluster hinge design. Nintendo sent me a check for the full price of a brand new DS Lite. I bet Nintendo realized how weak the hinge was for the DS, and decided on the wider hinge design used in all later DS models.

I didn't even know there was a difference between a DS and a DS lite except for the shell. I actually got a DS lite back when I was 7 and I never knew the regular DS was even a thing.

lmao, same here, I mean I figured out a couple of the differences myself when I played mario 64 DS (because it mentions a thumb pad and a wrist strap, neither of which i had on my DS Lite so i assumed there had to have been a different kind of DS) but i had no idea the charger and screen brightness were different from the lite

Reminds me of a similar thing with the Dreamcast in which a Chinese manufacturer took old stocks of the systems, put them into new shells that had LCD screens built-in for use of traveling, and called it the Treamcast

Are you sure you're not thinking of the Japanese McDonald's DS that was given to employees to teach them to work there. It came with an exclusive game that wasn't available to anyone for ages but it was bought by a KZreadr and the game was put on archive.org. Look at Nick Robinson's youtube for a more detailed story

you may be talking about the Japanese one as was already stated. The shell of the DS is so nice looking and the MD logo on it makes it even better. The exclusive game itself has been dumped and has an amazing sound track and decent gameplay for a game that was only meant for training.

there is actually a ds lite XL prototype behind Nintendo's closed doors. had 2 game slots as well instead of just 1. turns out they thought it was too thick, and eventually that became the dsi.

The entire purpose of this is to repurpose E-waste in a cost-effective manner. Replacing the screens entirely defeats the purpose. Also, the ML is just a new shell for the DS, so yeah, it's bigger than the DSlite, but still roughly the same size as the original in the case styling of the lite. You'd have to keep the screen size of the DS.

This is a great concept. I'm surprised this sort of reshell of the og DS isn't more common. I'd have probably gotten this instead of something like the DS Lite. If there was a better screen mod as well this would be great.

Wow! That's so weird but cool! Imagine this was released in an alternate universe!

that a refurb board in that ml version there, and what the marker is indication of. could possibly also had been a way to repurpose broken systems where the shell just wasn't salvageable for some reason, and just combined the internal parts that still worked from two or three other broken ones into the working ones. would probably make the most sense financially actually because the alternative in that case is no profit. EDIT: otherwise i don't think they necessarily just converted a bunch of perfectly working older ds models just into the newer shell. even at the time it wouldn't had made a ton of sense. the old original models have enough value where it wouldn't be worth the gain just putting a working one into a new shell for no reason, so i'm sure there was some reason we don't know.

ML stands for Manos Largas. That's Spanish for large hands. This was a special version of the DS created for the Mexican market to be sold to kids suffering from Large Hands Disease, thus the larger footprint.

I originally had the “Main Land” thought to, and that it might have been an early short live version of a redesign for the market, but by this point iQue would have been the name on it instead of Nintendo, even on the case, so the fact its not listed as anything but a DS ML and still has the regular Japanese menus and startup makes me think this is possibly just a re-casing of old leftover DS boards to make them look more like the DS lite just to sell off old stock maybe.

I actually really like the original ds model. It looks futuristic. It would've been awesome if they made a new 2ds/3ds xl but with the ds design and backwards compatibility for gba/gbc/gb games.

Years ago I meant to pick this up from AliExpress but just never pulled the trigger because I was sure it would be real!

This may look like a knock off or third party DS But then you realize that it's officially licensed, produced and made by Nintendo

I was expecting it to be a "DS Lite XL." That is, I thought it would have the larger screens like the DSi XL, but without any of the upgrades that justified the "i." But when he opened it, there were the original sized screens so then I was really confused.

A man who will examine a piece of tech to discover what it is, even going so far as to take it apart to look at the motherboard and compare it to an original. And he looks and sounds like a young Jacob Rees-Mogg. You are definitely in my top five now sir. Right alongside LGR, 8-Bit Guy, and Technology Connections.

Personal thought, giving that NDSL was officially sold in China (the iQue DSL), it's possible that before that was a thing, a version of original DS was planned and probably got into test production, but was ultimately scrapped because DSL become a thing. Either there was some stock shells or the mold that wasn't got used was found and reused, and now there's this weird shell. Otherwise it's hard to imagine who got such a big dedication to model this rather accurate mold.

I unexpectedly find myself one of those eagle-eyed people. And I want one.

Your videos are the reason I've gotten into retro moding and repair. I've learned so much from your videos. Thanks for the hobby.

I knew exactly what it was when I saw that hinge, that's actually really awesome. and if it doesn't cost much at all to buy these weirdly genuine DS's you could actually shell swap it back to an original for a fraction of the price the DS actually costs.

To be fair, this would be a amazing shell replacement for a cheap way to replace perished and broken shells or for thoses that dont like the shape of the original ds and want it to look more like a ds lite...

There was a certain revision of a DS Phat that lets you install the DS Lite firmware so you have the different brightness settings. Google it.

What about making a custom version of this? Any way to replace the original screens with something bigger? Maybe from the DSi XL if the motherboard allows for it? I love the Idea of the Gameboy Macro, but hate that the GBA carts aren't flush with the console. A custom Gameboy Macro ML would fix that with or without the screen replacements. Just spitballing.

I assume this DS ML is one of those iQue thing that's going on in China. Around the 2000s, China has "weird" restrictions that don't allow game console to be sold as is. Nintendo managed to circumvent the restrictions by marketing themselves as iQue in China, and I suspect this is one of the byproduct. Edit: Then again, the Nintendo 3DS was marketed as iQue 3DS in China, so maybe they dropped the iQue moniker in this one.

The iQue 3DS was officially iQue 3D Multimedia Interactive System, though, which also "wasn't" a game console. It got a very limited game library for being region-locked with nobody got the interest to release game on it, though, but fans did managed to got Nintendo to release Pokemon Sun/Moon on it, years after there's anything released on the console. That's said, the Switch in China is just Nintendo Switch Game Console, and it actually could be considered a success despite online features are region locked.

(PS2 in China was Sony Computer Entertainment System I think, also "not" a game console. Though giving that pretty much no game got released on it, maybe it should be classified as a DVD player.)

To be fair, quite often Japan does XL as LL, when talking about clothing sizes. But then sometimes they do XL too. It's kinda confusing. Signed, an XL / LL -sized clothes-wearer.

I have an original DS with a beat up shell and it needs a new battery and screen... I'd love to have a shell like this to just swap it all into!

Of course it doesn't get any love. The screens are awful, very washed out, inaccurate colors, appalling viewing angles, has just two brightness settings ('on' or 'off') and it really detracts from real world usage.

I would hazard that ML meant Modern Lite since it's using a new shell and presumably new parts.

the Chinese Nintendo DS was branded "iQue DS", and was a licensed product.

I'm probably just gaslighting myself, but I swear I heard about these shells about a decade ago, when a used game shop was chatting with me about the failing hinges on the standard DS. He said that it was like a DS Lite that took HGH.

to be fair, there is ALOT of ds and ds lites with broken hinges so this is actually in my opinion a good idea

ML stands for Mainland? Just a guess. Nintendo systems wasn't legally allowed to be sold in Chinese the Mainland at the time. Maybe the different shell was used to bypass regulations to get them onto the grey market (without Nintendo's permissions). I'm guessing these were left over on the production line when Nintendo announced the old DS was being discontinued and they weren't even sent to be assembled into the proper shell yet.

I have an original DS which has the same screen brightness and brightness settings as a DS Lite. I had to flash a custom firmware to do it and only some original DS models will work with this firmware.

Once they stopped manufacturing the old DS Consoles they probably, as you said, got left with tons of old units. How do you sell old hardware when you have new hardware out already? You disguise the old hardware in a new body and sell it at a lower mark than the new one. Could have been a good move originally and if Nintendo where behind it, they stood to gain a fair bit

Maybe they're remanufactured, and recognized the shortcomings of the original DS shells. Would be a good way of recycling good internals with bad shells.

I bought this for $30 and took the internals out and bought a non working original DS with a near mint shell for $40 the motherboard was fried and swap was easy now I have a brand new looking original DS that I only spent $70 for totally worth it in my opinion for the parts alone.

I vaguely remember hearing about this. It only released in Asia. It's called ML because it stands for "Mega" large instead of the usual "xtra" large because that's usual for Asia. It was only in production for a little bit. That's all I remember if my memory serves me correctly. I could be completely making this up in my brain. I don't know.

I actually really like the idea of this! I always had a problem with the DS lite because the GBA cart would stick out, and I had a problem with the original DS because of its design. This is like a good inbetween. I think a good idea would to sell the shells on there own as a mod kit. If you coupled that with the later revisions of the first DS that uses IPS screens, for me that would be the ultimate original style DS! Thoughts? Edit: apparent an IPS phat DS doesn't exist and it's somthing I think I made up in my head lol but I still think a mod kit for this would be pretty cool

I didn't realize that the original DS had the same charger plug as the GBA, I thought it had the same charger as the DS Lite. (Which was my first handheld) For a while there, I thought it looked like an early DS Lite engineering sample! Also, funny how on the label they have the circle for the 'i' in dsi without the 'i' in it. Certainly a good find!
