I think it’s stupid that caring deeply about city planning is ever ridiculed, why wouldn’t you want to critically think about the place you live? Also there are so many social implications that city planning deals with including environmental and social justice.

I used to have a similar obsession with maps more specifically, I created fictional countries and linked up their cities with train lines and motorways. I think this obsession came about due to the old gta maps found in game cases, I used to like driving around, walking, talking in the scenery, using bikes both motorcycles and bicycles and of course LS Transit trains. People always thought it was weird to enjoy a game like gta without the activities most associated with the game. Considering people always labeled me as Autistic it’s nice to see others I can relate to.

My son, from about 7 years old, filled ream after ream after ream of A4 paper with maps…. Imaginary city maps, just like yours… with suburb names, street names, train lines, stations, etc. etc. etc. he went through packets of texta pens, but only used certain colours, He was obsessed with speed limit signs and coordinating them with my car speedo, from the age of 3 ( so no speeding allowed by mum), and built town scapes out of paper, toothpicks and cardboard from around 6-7. He’s now doing urban planning at RMIT in Melbourne. I love how his mind works… He's on the spectrum too. Your map drawings bring joy to my heart. You are so much alike in that respect. I'm not autistic(as far as I know) but I also had this obsession with mapping cities, topographic maps, and zoning maps, mostly at school during boring classes, and at home when procrastinating homework. I drew some city maps with lines representing roads in different colors for collectors, highways, etc. And colorful zoning maps for neighborhoods. This too after playing Cities: Skylines. But, I was also obsessed with transportation as early as elementary school. I remember drawing huge cities from aerial views on several pages attaching them together, and then calculating the population. I remember planning an airport, several bus terminals, and shopping malls, and even drawing each individual parking lot. I was also drawing and designing airplanes, and I had an airline company with my friend. We also drew money and tickets. All during boring classes in elementary school and after-school daycare. And that kind of was my way to also get friends, cause they'll be interested in what I'm doing and would join me in drawing the maps(although it would take them time to get what I'm doing). Anyway, I'm glad to share my "obsession" and see that I'm not the only one doing it!

The reason for my interest in city planning is actually because almost all of us live in one and face the challenges of a city daily. I live in a huge city where getting around is a chore and being constantly on the way from one place to another is normalized. My goal to make my commute faster by choosing different ways to travel or going at different times just evolved into thinking critically for a way that one city is planned. I never had a special interest in city planning before my long commutes, but after realizing how even a small amount of rational planning can affect the life quality of thousands of people I began to have an interest in it. This gradually evolved into my interest towards sustainable city planning with a design point towards pedestrians and greenery . All of those interests peaked when I started playing CS1 during the Covid outbreak. I believe that most of us do not see cities just as concrete jungles with huge housing and accommodations, but rather as evolving pieces of history and culture where one gets to experience all of it from the first hand. This realisation has made me appreciate all the cities I visited where the absurdities or the planning choices could be explained with the countries culture and history. As a side note I really appreciate how you structure your content around explaining your background towards this specific interest, since it reminds me of how there are likeminded people who enjoy city planning as much as I do. Looking forward to your future videos!!

And for people that call it weird, I say to them, well I could out causing mischief in the community, and getting into trouble, which would you rather - a mapper who keeps to himself, or an anti-social lout drinking in the park with his friends. I use to draw maps all the time as a kid. I loved looking at them as a kid reading history books. Ive played cities skylines and transport fever so much because they inspire so much city and regional planning. Even my job is planning for a large town. My degree was in Geography and GIS. I spend a bulk majority of my time looking and manipulating spaital data for a municipality. If there was one thing I was born to do it was to make maps. There is no doubt in my mind that I am a natural cartographer. It scratches that weirdly obsessive itch. I also have ADD which is funny that you mention it too. I've been asked if I was autistic before. Could be but never diagnosed as such, so I can't really claim that label. Yes GIS is awesome, I've just started learning QGIS at uni this year. It was my first subject - what a subject to throw you into. I slowly got the hang of it, but I found getting the shapefiles from govt websites into it, quite challenging, but once the data was in, the mapping was great, especially the drawing of polygons over maps, and how it makes auto legends. Your job sounds great, a large town, what a responsibility, Yes creative minds are all unhinged, but I'll take the label - I dont wanna change. Thanks for watching, appreciate it.

I almost cried with this video. I’ve needed to find my old notebooks after this video. I’m exactly like this. I’ve created a 7 line metro system city to my city, with all the details (costs, rolling stock, colour of the lines, name of the stations, integration with the airport and many more). I was diagnosed with autism some months ago (I barely knew what autism until then). I’m so happy that I am not the only one

@@cityplannermismanages the Unicode standard is the international standard for encoding text. The reason why I can put 㤨, ⤠, ❉, and ꩀ all in a youtube comment together is because a bunch of computer scientists and linguists agreed on a way for computers to interpret binary as all sorts of writing systems. for organizational purposes, the whole standard is split up by writing system. for example, all of the greek letters are grouped together (Greek and Coptic block), as well as the common chinese characters (CJK Unified Ideographs block), and so on and so forth. Some writing systems actually get multiple blocks, but that's besides the point. I tried to write out all of the unicode characters sequentially, and I wrote unicode characters (letters, basically) until I got to the Tibetan script. It kept me occupied for a bit during quarantine, but I eventually got bored.

I probably would have gotten more into it if I hadn't been really dissuaded by my parents and the few friends I had at the time. I honestly don't know why everyone around me was so against me drawing city maps, but my parents really disliked me doing it and told me to draw other stuff or took away my paper and sent me outside. Over the years my biggest interest has become world building and story telling, and mapping out fantasy and scifi worlds as I write stories for them is always going to be an important and enjoyable part of the process.

It’s only 14 pages or something but it’s interesting that we have the same tactics of drawing highways first! I’m really impressed with the amount of detail in your maps and I can relate to the struggle of coming up with names. My capital city’s name may or may not be completely copied from a Spanish city. I love that you share your work, I have but on a way smaller scale.

One suggestion that I have is to keep the same scale maps as your notebook but have a much larger canvas like an old school classroom map the size of a wall. You are not alone I can say that much. When I was younger I used to make a lot of maps, especially when I was at school. It is interesting seeing the differences between your maps and my own. My maps never got as detailed as yours and even my later maps never got as through, detailed, or neat penmanship. I am jealous looking at your map because it looks so much better in many ways than the various maps I made, with all of the detail and coloring and how nice they look! Mine were always sort of rough but legible. While I had all the fun stuff like highways and train systems I didn't go into the detail of shopping centers and uses of spaces as much as you did, even though I probably should have. One interesting difference though is one detail that I was heavily fixated on was the numbering of the blocks which seems to be absent on your map. This makes sense since as a kid I was very much fixated on numbers and so seeing these big streets spiral out into big numbers was very compelling. Especially the little streets that could versus the big streets that only last a bit. I think my biggest map is about 88 pages. I have some other maps that are also pretty big I think. I had a bit of a habit of sticking with a project for like a couple of months to a year before starting up some other random city to see if it caught my fancy. A lot of my maps tend to be somewhat incomplete because of that. Your map is much better at considering the layout of the city and all of the actual meaty city stuff that had to do with cities and how they look and function. I had a downtown (sometimes) but I didn't think about how it functioned with other elements. Train lines just sort of went where I wanted them too. Same thing with trams. So for example one of my big maps has sort of redundant and too close another train lines wth a lot of east west lines, but new north south ones. Highways had the opposite problem with a lot of north south highways but few east west ones besides the outer ringer which was the gimmick of this map. I never really understood that when I was younger and making maps on paper and so a lot of what I did was mimicking the places where I lived (The United States) which meant a lot of sprawl and highways! Speaking of highways all of the various exits on them and the ordering and pathing of highways was really interesting to me so I tended to have a lot more highways than a good city should. To be fair, so does most of America! That is another interesting difference because it is clear the effect of where one is born and used to seeing on their maps. My maps are unmistakably inspired by the United States with a lot of straight grid like patterns mixed up like the messy mix of street grids that comprised of where I grew up. While you mention a lot of Sydney influences on your maps. I do remember the difficulty of coming up with names for places. Because omg so many streets. When I try to make maps now it's hard to channel that same magic but honestly I just took words I liked, or names of cute things like animals or just shoved letters together and called it a word! It went decently well I feel like. It is nice to see that someone had the same obsession that I did. It was interesting because no one really had the same interests I did. I didn't know other people who read the county map book for fun. Or who made these large maps. I remember other kids were curious about them, and I know one teacher of mine liked them and was impressed. I think I didn't care enough to really hide it and I wanted to draw them so I did. They were fun to draw. I should draw and make more maps now, actually thinking about the nature of cities and what works to create an effective successful city. Hopefully this comment finds you well and at gives you some support that you're not alone in this extensive mapping journey.

I love the scrabble book. great resource and awesome patterns to observe. looks much nicer than some scrabble learning tools. fun to do it by hand too

OH MY GOD! I used to do something similar at school when the teacher was teaching, never got into trouble. But yours is on a truly different level of detailing.

This is incredible!!, one thing I've always wanted were books organizing words by all sorts of different categories but I can't for the life of me organize lists, charts, tables, etc... I would be extremely proud of this, thanks for sharing it with everyone. Again, super cool stuff, made me happy to see the video

There was a guy in my class that used to do this in black pen. I sat behind him and I could literally just watch him for hours. I hate that I was too scared to talk to him, we both had autism, but mine is the under stimulated kind, his was the overstimulated kind. I was also pretty good at masking, and he wasn't so he got bulled a lot before I knew him. By the time I'd met him, I was sure he would rather not talk to anybody at all. It was him who got me interested in cities, grids, and planning. Watching him before and after class map out our city of Chicago in such detail made me want to try it too.

I also liked to draw maps as a kid. Not to this level, but I would've been blown away if you had showed me this. Well, I'm still blown away now. Like creating an entire city with merely a pen, paper and your own imagination, this is so cool.

When i was younger i used to draw metro maps, i really liked it, i even created a ficticious country, with its airports, islands, highways, ports... Even made a map for its capital city detailing its streets, train stations, green areas, highways... But then i see this and, its just beautiful, just a dream, the fact you put all that dedication into building this atlas of a city with that degree of perfection its just mindblowing. Congrats!

I feel funny about this, and I mean good funny. I like that you showed us something so precious :) I feel honored! And damn it's a hell of a work (although I am terrified by your streets being so close to the coast. Erosion!! )
