Scoot Henderson was tied as favorite for Rookie of the Year a few weeks before the season but now he’s nowhere to be found. This is a look at what’s gone wrong for the number 3 pick and how much hope he has for the future.

The people who didn’t like the miller pick obviously didn’t watch him very closely in college. Dude was the alpha on a very good Alabama team, was a threat to shoot the ball from any spot on the court, and his open 3 point percentage (where a defender is 7 feet or more away) was around 50-60 percent. Dude is that immediate 3&D rookie who could develop into a severe bucket getter as he gets used to the NBA

Yep, he’s the prototypical wing every team is looking for. I never understood why people thought scoot should go over him. A small guard who can’t shoot and plays no defense? Yeh….I’ll take the 6ft 7-8 wing with a pure shooting stroke and a ton of potential on defense over that any way

Casey you are correct! Learning the PG position is hard enough but trying to learn it on an NBA level makes it almost impossible.
The problem is a lot of people said the Spurs should have DRAFTED HIM OVER WEMBY, and a lot of people said he was the most ready NBA prospect in the 2023 class, that is why people call him a bust.

What was actually said is that if it wasn't for Wemby, Scoot might have been the #1 pick. I'm still not sold on Scoot, but I am willing to give it a year or two. I am still not seeing what everyone else saw, even watching his G league game,
Great work as always, top notch nba coverage. You dont push hype for clicks
Great video. Very informative and well presented.
I like how you dig into history to make points about today. Ie Hornets draft pick vs Scoot 2 years ago...

Great video man!
Amazing vid as always
I'm sure he will bounce bad, but this just shows you it doesn't matter how good you are in the G league or in college or overseas your game may not translate as well as you think it's just crazy to think that you could be the man and then you can't but it will take him time I'm sure he will bounce back
Spot on analysis per usual, PG is absolutely one of the hardest positions to play in sports, similar to a QB in football. Controlling the tempo and flow of the game at NBA speed is something that takes time and development. Where a lot of these ROY candidates have experienced PG's that are actually helping make their case by getting them the ball in transition, and setting up great looks at the basket for easy buckets. Scoot has an incredibly high ceiling, and he's got a work ethic and maturity to match it. His defense is already fairly impressive, whereas Dame was essentially a turnstile. If Scoot can become a solid three-point threat, he's going to be difficult to manage for defenses next year, as defenders sag off him and clog passing lanes, not only because he's not a consistent threat from deep, but he's so explosive that playing close coverage on him, he's always a threat to blow by you. He was destined to go through the school of hard knocks this year, but he'll come out the other side better for it. I expect he'll make a significant jump in his sophomore year, similar to Shaedon. The Blazers are exciting, and that combo of Shaedon and Scoot could be an exciting tandem for years to come. Mike Schmitz is very good at evaluating NBA level talent, and I don't think he missed the mark with Scoot.

Being a rookie point guard is hard enough, especially at 19. I remember being super excited for Gary Payton when I was a kid, and being disappointed that 1st year thinking he was a bust. I would not sweat it but he should have been coming off the bench from the jump.

People think everybody should instantly be really good players. Scoot putting up numbers similar to Brandon Ingram did his rookie year. Ingram didn’t get going until the end of the year once he started to get use to the league. He carried it into the next year
Love that you’re saying give him time. He has the right mentors and attitude. He needs time to settle in. He’ll get there
I watched a video today about the 2020 bubble at the beginning of this video without meaning to he explained why the bubble is harder. Fans make a difference, good or bad. They're very much needed.
He got shut down during his gleauge stint. I was hoping to see him in Austin but he wasn't available last season. I see the speed. I didn't get to see his shooting.

The problem with A.M. Hoops is he always sees the problem. LOL Give him some time bro. Not all rookies are the same.
To be fair, Scoot has been good in other aspects of the game like assists and rebounds. The major issue is shooting and I think is just a matter of time until he blossoms in that aspect. He started with an injury which didn’t help and hasn’t even played 30 games. Give time and he will be great
This is why I subscribe!
Amazing content keep going. NEVER BACK DOWND NEVER WHAT?
Scoot is easily my favorite rookie right now and I hope he plays better later in the season
You said if they suck on the Ignite they get more minutes, and they don't have to worry about getting benched. You could say that about any star in the NBA, especially high drafted rookies who teams hope will eventually be good. If teams want to draft players regardless of how they perform in the G League or college, isn't that a lack of incentive as well? A lot of 1st round picks play 1 year of college, and it doesn't matter how well they do; they're already shoo-ins for the 1st round because they were highly scouted in high school. They also play by different rules with a different 3 point line. The G League is meant to replicate the NBA. A lot of the guys there already played in college, and some are even 1st round picks. There's a championship too. Let's compare his first 11 G League games to his first 11 NBA games: 2021-2022 G League showcase: 24.4 MIN 14 PTS 10.6 FGA 43.6 FG% 17.4 3P% 5 REB 3.6 AST 2.6 TOV 3.1 PF 7-4 W/L 26.5 USG% 2023-2024 NBA: 25.1 MIN 9.2 PTS 10.1 FGA 35.1 FG% 20.5 3P% 2.6 REB 4.2 AST 3.2 TOV 4.2 PF 5-6 W/L 23.4 USG% To me, this suggests that the stats carry over. Maybe players get more coaching in college, but I don't think you can blame Scoot's NBA performance on the G League. You're responsible for your own improvement.
I’ll give him 2 to 3 seasons before evaluating if he’s a bust or not. Like you said, raw rookie and playing at the toughest position (PG).
The numbers and stats are there to provide info and aid the coaches in decision making and should not be an indication of bust. You still have to look at the player beyond the numbers.
Man you really do a great and professionally insightful job on all of your vids.

Those points you made about the G league vs college are very valid, made the G league alternative sound like a terrible idea lol
I have faith in Scoot. I feel like he should really work out with Steph his mentor during the off season. Work on his shooting, handles & off ball game. Seeing how the Blazers have some guys who stay glued on the rock. Scoot can still be effective off the ball.
Jaime jaquez junior has been amazing… maybe make a video on how much of a steal he was for the heat
0:20 Wemby is not just the tallest player in the league but has also been playing pro ball since he was 15 and the Spurs 1st option on offense. Generational Talent. Henderson is the Blazers 6th man. Yeah he was the 3rd pick but he has WAY better vets in front of him right now. And the role he is filling is needed.
Scoot’s gonna be a badass, and he’s improving every game.
I had so much confidence in Scoot. I feel so dumb thinking he would be better than Wemby before. Not that I doubted Wemby but I really thought and its still possible that he would have serious injuries with that height and frame but after seeing him doing yoga and all types of crazy stretches he night actually stay relatively healthy and have a long career and they were right that hes a generational talent. His team knows what there doing. Scoot shows me not to put much stock in anyone coming from the g league although I thought the Thompson twins would be bad to start coming from whatever that program they were at was but Ausar looks like he's gonna be amazing, already an elite defender. I still think Scoot can become an elite pg but he's not what I imagined he'd be, thought he would come in killing it.

It's funny in that Bucks game with all the misses by his teammates on good looks. Basketball is such a rhythm game and what that says to me is that his teammates don't know what to expect from an erratic Scoot play-to-play, which is obviously a big fat negative for your PG. If you don't really expect to get a pass then you're not totally prepping for it, so when it comes you (even if it's a great look) it can be a little surprising and you may not be totally prepped to catch-and-shoot. Part of why guys like Trae, Halliburton, and even Tyus Jones are so successful is their teammates expect and are prepared to become involved at any time. Those guys are legit PG's, orchestrating their team's music on the floor. As Scoot's teammates get more familiar with his tendencies they'll probably make more shots, but the question about whether he's really a conductor has yet to be answered.
Nice dig early at Trae, let’s also mention that he hit a clutch floater right in Wemby’s face and won the game.
Its the beginning he will get better
-A top 5 pick becoming a bust is more common than not. -it’s still very early in his career.
I'm glad you had that ending lol

I think people forgot that it takes time for some point guard. Lonzo for example average 10 7 7 in his rookie year if you wants the whole game he was good but it didnt translate to the stats sheet until after a couple of years when he finally got his 3s to go down and then injury happened

The next step that us basketball culture need to take in order to gain quality basketball again, is to get kids to stay in college at least two years.
