    The truly incredible thing here is that if you ask Google how long it takes to drive from the Red Ball to Portofino, the answer is 42 hours. We just reached the point where it is possible to drive long distances in an EV as fast as the math says is possible in an ICE car.

    @BuddyHandsome Absolutely. I regularly commute from NJ to CT and occasionally take the Cross Bronx Expressway, a 6 mile stretch of highway that is usually perpetually congested. Except for late March of 2020 (when the Cannonball record was set) when I set an unbeatable personal record of 5 minutes 50 seconds to cross, a blistering average speed of 59.45 mph. Usually it would take me 30-45 minutes minimum to transit the Cross Bronx.

    ok maybe that's some of your secrets..but did you figure out the optimum speed to drive if you are stopping only at V3 superchargers? it feels like with drag increasing and range decreasing, if you pass a certain speed, you're losing more time during charging stops than you are saving by driving faster ?

  • @fridaybot

    @fridaybot

    2 жыл бұрын

    You are correct certainly there is a optimum point of speed vs charge, tesla with all their data must allready know. For us its difficult to obtain enough data to find the perfect speed. Also the charging capabilities are the most important factor for EV long-distance driving. 250 kW is good (1000 km/h) but there are now 360 kW but not even Porsche taycan can utilize more than 260 kW...yet. the first car than can charge at 350+ kW for more than a few minutes will take the record. The best would be to ad and modify the battery system to use 2 different chargers simultaneously basically doubling up the battery packs much like the extra gas tanks but much less convenient. That way 2 chargers if cables long enough park in between get 250*2= 500 kW then it starts to get real interesting.

    I get on my soapbox about this on any video about EVs. We need a charging standard!!! This is not going to work if we have a patchwork of charging stations that only work with a particular manufacturer. ICE vehicles all have standardized fuel ports to enable them to utilize ANY fuel station in the country (possibly the world, I think they use the same standard everywhere). We NEED that for EV's.

  • @wehooper4

    @wehooper4

    2 жыл бұрын

    Tesla is the only one that's manufacture locked. From here on out basically everything else in the US will be CSS. Newer Tesls can charge via VSS with an adapter (analogous to Apple Lightning with USB-C). So what you really need is more third party chargers.

  • @ZiggyTheHamster

    @ZiggyTheHamster

    2 жыл бұрын

    We've had a charging standard for a long time. Only Tesla doesn't follow it. Any other EV will charge with CCS. Some EVs and PHEVs older than around 2017 will have CHAdeMO, but I have never seen a charging station that didn't have CCS and CHAdeMO. PHEVs generally can't DC fast charge, so they have the top part of the CCS plug only. This part is known as J1772, which both Tesla and everyone else support. Though you will not be charging a PHEV on a road trip, but rather only at a place like a mall which you'd expect to be at for a couple hours. In Europe, Tesla is forced to use CCS like everyone else is, though only Teslas can access the Supercharger network, just like here. That said, there are several different sizes of fuel nozzles even in the US, and they're not generally compatible. A semi truck diesel nozzle will not fit in a passenger vehicle diesel filler. A gasoline nozzle will fit in most diesel fillers, though. And a passenger diesel nozzle doesn't fit in a gasoline filler most of the time. Weird fuels like E85 and >93 octane also frequently use a different size nozzle, meaning that some cars that take E85 have to have an adapter so the E85 nozzle will insert. Some older cars and motorcycles aren't compatible with "enhanced vapor recovery" nozzles as used in California and other states and require the user to hold the nozzle just right to get it to pump. I would say that EV charging and gas station fueling standards are just about as universal. Think about Teslas as diesels in that analogy.

    Trying for a round trip cannonball record only makes sense if you live near LA OR NYC. Electric cars are definitely going to be the average commuter car in another 10-20 years as long as battery advancements continue. I believe it will be at least 50 years for gas powered cars to be somewhat rare to see people using them as a daily driver. The best thing about the Cannonball is that it is only limited to who wants to try for the record, any vehicle you want to try it with is fine & there isn't any sanctioning body requiring you to get inspected, have special licenses to compete like most races require.

EV roadtripping is just different, and if you don't own one, and don't have cheap charging at home, you don't really get it. I know I didn't until we got one. It's not filling up the tank, the goal is just charge it up enough to get home or to your hotel where you have low speed charging. That's the only place you fill it up past ~60%.

    Yeah, you're definitely still going to have to plan out your route in advance, to maximize your chances of finding ANY charging stations. That's still the biggest problems with EVs at the moment: not the cars themselves, but the infrastructure around them. That said, if more gas stations put charging stations up in the corner of their lots...and why not? Pretty sure they already have 240v (and possibly even 480v three-phase!) for their pumps...

    Well considering somebody converted a Tesla into a pickup truck, I could see the potential of putting a 3000 to 4000 kilowatt Recreational Vehicle generator in the back for charging/supplementing the batteries during the run instead of having to find places to stop and charge as often. The only reason I say using a one that's converted into a pickup truck was because you don't want a running diesel or gasoline generator in the passenger compartment or even the trunk necessarily unless you had a guaranteed reliable way for it to get cooling airflow and avoid exhaust gasses from getting the cabin.

  • @ctdieselnut

    @ctdieselnut

    2 жыл бұрын

    I was thinking about that and did some math on it. I don't remember the numbers exactly, but the moral of the story was a generator small enough to fit in a short pickup bed wont make a big enough difference to be worth while. As in, a 10 kw generator only adds a few miles charge per hr. You're underestimating just how much power the charger stations put out to charge quickly. It's a lot. Unless you get some monster heavy diesel genset it doesn't make sense, and then theres still a tradeoff of all the extra weight. Ps, a kilowatt is 1000 watts. Most small portable gas ones you see are at most 10kw. Not 4000 kw like you said, which would be 4 million watts lol.

    Full conversion to EV's would require about a 30% increase in grid capacity. Very doable over a decade. The US spends about a trillion dollars a year on petroleum fuels for motor vehicles. As that money starts to transition over to the grid there would be plenty of money to support this shift.
