    Hey, this is 2023 speaking. In a year where we got two sets about a multiversal war between Phyrexians and everyone else, an epilogue set that involved the Pinkertons, a Lord of the Rings set, a Doctor Who set, the return to Eldraine and Ixalan, and one ridiculously overpriced set where four packs of fifteen cards each cost 200 USD, this video is preaching to the choir, and that's not even counting the secret lairs (I've basically tuned out all secret lairs since I found out about them).

    I know Spice said they aren't getting the "compensation they deserve," but source? Are employees not offered stock option, literally the way to harvest the profits of the corporation you are part of... Are their saleries below market level? Are they not in a good work environment? I know a few years ago there were some articles about discrimination in R&D, but IDK how true that is now, and also that is not what Spice was referring to.

  • @matthewspeck5467

    @matthewspeck5467

    @@czcbearsrule1 I believe the point Spice was getting at is the fact that profits are calculated after paying the workers, so when a company is announcing record profits on top of releasing increasing amounts of product, then that tends to mean that the money being earned for the company isn’t being paid out to the workers, but instead is surplus value that then gets put towards making more money. I don’t believe we hear anything from the people at WoTC getting big bonuses for pulling off amazing sets, so if anything the lack of people at wizards talking about how much extra money they are getting while WoTC flaunts its profits paints a very specific narrative.

  • @czcbearsrule1

    @@matthewspeck5467 Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. You can’t say well we haven’t publicly heard about their compensation so they must not be getting compensated well. Yes, the definition of profits is the capital earned after expenses, but that does not mean that the employees are not getting “fairly” rewarded for their efforts. You can’t just say someone isn’t getting rewarded without evidence. Surplus value making more profits could mean hiring more R&D staff, paying staff more to encourage keeping talent, making the work environment better to get the best out of staff (for instance free lunches), etc. Also, hasbro is public if workers want to own their profits just buy stock….

    Casual Hobbyist here who literally started with AFR: This is a really weird time to get into Magic. The way people were talking about Strixhaven or Kaldheim those sets sounded like they came out ages ago, not both this year. It's impossible to get any *real* sense of time or scale for products released the past couple years because *nobody* has that sense anymore. Preview season is eternal, and I didn't even realize AFR had just come out by the time I properly started, I'd seen friends talk about it for what felt like forever. Because there is never any break or rest.

    I started MTG in Amonkhet, and even I can feel the acceleration. When there were two sets per block, it still felt like things were going fast, but I could just about get a grip on the characters, story, card archetypes, etc etc Now everything is releasing constantly, and even though I accept the idea that not all products are for every player, I feel like I don’t even have the time to figure out whether or not a product is for me. I don’t have time to think or form an opinion or enjoy anything, before a brand new plate is shoved in my face. It’s like being at a restaurant, and they give you your meal before you’ve had a chance to start the appetizers. It’s just too much too fast, and it makes it impossible to actually savor what I love about this game- the art, the story, the weaving together of mechanics and flavor- I just can’t get a grip on it before I’m expected to be hype about the newest thing.

    The thing about that "not every product is for every player" is that the process of figuring that out is stressful and time-consuming, because you have to speculate about how playable each card is in your format of choice and whether it's a good deal at the price being offered. And even once you decide not to buy it, there's a firehose of advertising and articles trying to convince you one way or another until the hype cycle starts over for the next product.

    I'm really feeling the burnout. I wish I could have gotten excited for and gotten to experience Kaldheim but it came and went before I even realized it existed. The business practices are driving me away. When there's three or four different types of boosters for each set, countless commander products, entirely too many Secret Lair drops, and a bunch of nonstandard sets, I can't keep up and I don't even want to. I'm a player that likes consuming Magic story through the flavor of the cards and I'm not really getting that anymore. The cards are all full of rules text, there's an overabundance of legends to support commander players but I don't know who any of them are, and the main overarching story featured in the story spotlights are kinda awful. And more practically, I'm not made of money so I can't afford to keep up anymore. I've been playing commander and ignoring pretty much anything else. I'm very frustrated with the game. And I'm even more frustrated at the company. Also, #Spice8Right

    @@cacs2201 I don't play Commander much more often than that, but I think there's a definite issue with them overproducing straight-to-Commander cards. For a few years in my early collecting career, I would set aside $~120 a year to pre-order a full set of that year's Commander decks, knowing I wanted to play with at least a few cards from each one and that they'd be a good value later. That has certainly paid off, just looking at the current prices of the mono-color Medallions that have yet to see a printing since Commander 2014 - However, now we have at least 2 waves of Commander a year, each one with at least one or two killer app cards that, if I don't plink down $40+ to buy the deck(s) before everyone catches on and buys them out, will become a must-have staple in a deck I want to build later that ends up selling for more than the entire deck it was packaged in, or close to as high as that price that I may as well buy the deck and get some extra value from the purchase. It's on me that I bought the Osgir deck for Archaeomancer's Map a few weeks ago and haven't opened it yet, but even if I was on top of my organization and deck rotation, it still feels like I'm being manipulated by unprecedented amounts of FOMO marketing.

    This happened to me, I bought the set of Ikoria precons to play them sealed with my friends, they have all quit and I’ve sold out of 80% of my collection since. I have only a couple of commander decks and every new set there’s a must buy, objective upgrade or a better thing to ve doing in the same colors or design space, power creep is fucking real more than anything else. I got some MH2 cards for Duel (1v1) and the monkey got banned there before they arrived in the mail, after thinking for days about cuts and includes and the meta, the cards arrived and I burnt put and haven’t play them yet. Now the new set has a better 2 mana kill spell and a cantrip, and people are off the strat I was building against. Who can even keep up with anything anymore?

    My main problem with the product overload is that all of the product are trying to sell to commander players and ruining other formats in the process. If they used standard products to print cards for standard, commander products for commander cards, and modern products for modern cards, there wouldn’t be as much of a problem.

  • @trevthetree9838

    @trevthetree9838

    Just my opinion, but I think most of the stuff printed in Standard and Modern sets aren't really made for Commander cards. We'll usually only have 1 made for Commander card per set that still works in Standard. I've seen quite a few print for Modern cards printed in Standard, but not many for Commander. Modern Horizons 2 I couldn't make a Commander deck around General Ferrous Rokiric, but I could easily make a Modern deck for it. Closest thing to "made for commander" that I can think of are legendary creatures, but I think it's easier to see cards as "made for commander" when Commander is a 100 card singleton casual eternal format, which accepts cards from all over Magic's history. Sorry if I couldn't get my points across well, I'm not too good at ordering my thoughts.

I started playing at a similar time, and have just generally been checked out for a similar period of time. I'm unable to synopsize the depth of these feelings at the moment. An anecdote I want to share though is that I was so excited to begin running a Magic club at my LGBTQ+ community center in 2019, and it finally reconnected me to an extent since it was playing limited or commander in a good environment. But with that fatigue setting in, the subsequent apathy, the pandemic, and everything... I don't think I can really run that club, or participate anymore in Magic in general! It's genuinely heartbreaking to me since it was a hyperfixation for me for many years, and something I cared about deeply. I think I'll just cherish the time I had with it and move on.

But I think the problem is less that there is more product available - a lot of people, including me, would never buy standard so it's nice to have more products that aren't related to standard, but when there's so many new cards being designed, it must be exhausting for the designers. Thank you SO much for making this, Spice! I feel like I'm constantly shouting into a void about this, as my friends, subreddits, and other content creators I follow act like this product overload isn't happening or is somehow a huge positive for us (and the game). With this deluge of products, I've basically had to stop following any limited content and more or less give up sealed and draft, create spreadsheets for every set in order to track potential new cards and prices for my existing or new Commanders, and generally debate dropping MtG wholesale. It's EXHAUSTING just as a player, so I can only imagine how drained you and other creators get about this. How are we supposed to analyze and master the game if we only get 7-10 days between spoilers for some new product? How are staple prices ever going to drop if there's just more and more FLASHY NEE CONTENT and never even a break for a Core Set that's just 40-60% reprints? How will any chase cards be "the right value" to put in a Precon without breaking WotC's impossible notion of "balance" and "availability to new players" or whatever bs they trot out to keep every Commander Deck from coming with a shockland and a Rhystic Study or Smothering Tithe? I knew it was gonna be bad when Wizards PR faces were saying certain products just "weren't made for" me. Now I'm coming to see, maybe the whole game isn't for me. And that's tragic.

    Been more and more casual the less time I've had to play. Still love the game, still intend to keep playing, but most product releases for me boil down to checking the spoiler page after previews are done and being like 'oh that's cool', and then checking out and not caring afterwards.

    I like how this is getting recommended to me after wotc tried doing assassins creed spoilers before mh3 officially released

    13:00 This is part of the reason I don't play any competitive magic. There's not point in spending money on cards when they will be worthless in just a few months.

    i got into magic just about the same time spice did, and yeah. things have become so... un-followable. Impenetrable even. I stopped following magic story after Amonkhet and stopped buying product about the same time, occasionally popping in to arena to play with friends. I miss magic, but getting into standard would be a waste, paper magic is getting phased out bit by bit anyways, and Flesh&Blood is right there.

    The idea that paper Magic is being phased out is such an absurd one to me.

    @@ceulgai2817 its not truly, i know. but it definitely seems that wizards sees arena and their eyes just turn into dollar signs. A program with no way to obtain singles outside of opening enough packs to get wildcards? AND we can skip the physical print process??? I know paper magic is sticking around. But i seriously wonder where the focus will shift for them in the next few years.

    Oh dang, we got into the game at the same time! Can't describe how nostalgic I get when I see packs of Dragon's Maze and that duel deck Sun Titan art lol It's really sad to think of how I felt about the game back then compared to the apathy I have toward it now
