If they did it, it counts. If we start disqualifying any for things like this, we would start looking at advantages due to advancing tech or having a large team in the mix. The mission is spelled out clearly. Everyone on car crew gets from the Red Ball Garage to Portofino as fast as you can together in that same car. And do so without permission from authority. There are no asterisks in Cannonball. If we start making exceptions, it will never end. Advancements in tech will always be a help or hindrance depending on who has the tech and who can deploy countermeasures the best. Having a large team of spotters or even inside people will be an advantage. Step up and place your asterisk. Maybe we start taking off time for a bad fuel stop if it isn't their fault? Nope. The slippery slope will never end if it starts. Unless we want to be Amish and shun advancement and new strategies that emerge, IT COUNTS. And congrats to everyone on that team if it has been done.

All those other things you mentioned are within the team's control. Better strategies and better tech are all fine. Taking advantage of a situation outside any team's control is not equivalent. Everyone up to now has faced a relatively even playing field against which they've used their best ingenuity. This team used all the lessons learned from those teams and then double dipped on a wildly easier run. In any other race if you reduced the number of back markers to pass by 90%, no one would recognize the record. You can't even say "there's no rules in street racing", because there is one rule, that both guys racing get the same road. These guys broke the only rule in street racing. What they did is amazing, it's a huge accomplishment they should be extremely proud of, but it ain't the record because they weren't on the same track.

  • @yungtooli

    @yungtooli

gasfiltered how is better tech in the teams control when they were living in the 1970s? it’s not an even playing field when it’s decades apart. the only thing every attempt has in common is utilizing every tool they have at their disposal to set a new record which is exactly what these guys did. their record should stand with no asterisk

  • @Balomis

@@yungtooli It's not retroactive like that, this has nothing to do with past races. It's about what the record means for the future of Cannonball. Everyone now and into the future has access to the same (or better) technology to help them complete their run. But those people in the future may not have a global pandemic to clear the streets and make the race easier. It's a very simple concept.

In 1911, Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen and British explorer Robert Falcon Scott led two separate teams in an attempt to be the first person to reach the South Pole. Amundsen was the first to make it; Scott's team made it to the South Pole, but never made it back. Scott, and every man on his team, died. When later asked how he succeeded, Amundsen explained that he had calculated that as he and his men went through their supplies as they trekked across the ice, they would have less weight to carry and they would no longer need as many dogs to pull the sleds. He figured that it would be easier to use the dogs as food than to bring along enough food to feed all of the dogs for the entire trip. (In other words, to achieve his goal, he planned on eating most of his dogs.) We are (hopefully) incensed that anyone would consider such an act and we would certainly put an asterisk next Amundsen's "achievement" by pointing out that did this by deliberately eating his own dogs to achieve his goal. Clearly, a "win" isn't just a "win"; some wins are reprehensible. Is there any moral code to be adhered to in this pursuit to be the fastest car across the country? (If they passed a car fire on the side of the road, or a woman alone by a disabled car, in order to reach their goal, would you really feel the same about the "win"?)

Spending 9000 on suspension repairs for safety and getting a master Mercedes tech as a co driver who first spent 100s off hours working on the car for free put him at a significant advantage to everyone else. Ed took a very respectful approach, it’s understandable one would take this video as him condemning a record due to a technicality. However if you take the spirit of what a cannonball run is, the end goal may be how fast you can cross a country but every other time set faced many more speed bumps, meaning: traffic, police, gas station wait time, etc... Ed is not saying the Audi doesn’t hold the record for the FASTEST time, it’s unarguable they made it across the country in the least amount of time. Ed is merely saying the conditions the drivers faced (as a result of the covid-19 outbreak), it is not an apples to apples comparison... rather a record in its own category.

If we're being honest, a LOT of people doing this are just trying to live out a movie that they saw as a kid growing up - not chase the REAL original runs of the REAL originator himself. Cannonball Baker has largely been reduced to little more than the source of the name, with Brock Yates being idolized as "the man who created the chase"

This attempt / record definitely counts! It’s probably one of the few times in history so many variables will be in your favor. As we go into the future and the record gets ever so increasingly hard to break, it is moments like these that will give you a chance to go down in history as a cannonball record holder. The argument that the world isn’t the same as before the pandemic doesn’t hold well because the world is an ever changing place, what if there is a massive solar flare in the next 5-10 years that knocks off half the electricity of the US and some joe wants to take advantage of that to better the record. Does that not count either? I feel like Ed is trying to lessen the new record by subtly magnifying the stigma that this pandemic brings... Edit : grammar

Any of those make it difficult for the average person to even try, I don’t see how the pandemic is any different, it’s just something you can’t buy.

I disagree with the asterisk. You could argue that records set in the 1970's had an advantage because the US population was only a little over half of what it is today which = less congestion and no cell phones to call the police. And also, imagine the money, the planning and the risk these guys went through, only to have people say "its a record...sort of". Every era is going to have advantages and disadvantages that other era's didn't have. These guys just capitalized on a perfect time to make a run for it. Doesn't make it any less of a record. My hats off to these guys, it's an incredible feat.

I think it will remain in the books as a time to beat, but I do believe that it being set in the time of this pandemic, and all the advantages that come with that will plague the record itself. I agree with Ed totally when he mentioned the suit era of Olympic swimmers. This is totally akin to that. Yes, we respect the record, but maybe there was a distinct advantage that follows that record. Every time you hear an Olympic announcer mention a record from that era they refer to it as a suit era record. I feel like this record may be recognized just the same, but referred to as a covid-19 era record. Edit: spelling

But I also understand when he talks about the qualitative aspect of it, that if the record seems unachievable then there will not be as many aspirants as could’ve been. Anyways, props to the guys that achieved it. In terms of breaking the law and setting the record, this comes to my mind: If you’re gonna do time for murder then might as well kill as many people as you can.

Breaker 19 I don’t think Doug or Arnie need him to stick up for them. Arnie said in another comment that “the only rule is there are no rules” and that this looks like a fair run and the time is the new record. Ed beat Arnie in the 2904 by exploiting the rules a bit, possibly by a lot of bit really. It was not against the rules though and the record stands. I’m really surprised him of all people is kind of virtue signaling this attempt and the record. Someone always has an advantage, money wise or weather or traffic. People thought Alex’s time was impossible to beat, then people said Ed’s was definitely impossible to beat. That’s just the way world records go. People used to think running a 4 minute mile was impossible too. As soon as someone proved it could be done then a bunch more did it.

Aj Haas No they don’t. “The only rule is there is no rules” that came from Arnie. He recognizes this as the new record. Everyone who sets the record uses everything they can to gain an advantage. That’s most of the fun in it. People can’t retroactively create rules. Ed won the 2904 record quite unfairly but he didn’t break any rules, no one tried to put an asterisk after his record. They did change the rules for the following runs to essentially close the loopholes Ed found and used. I can’t possibly imagine how someone could be ok with that record but call foul on this one.

For the first time ever I think, I respectfully disagree with you, Ed. I think to take slights at the empty highways, stay-at-home orders, breaking the law while breaking the law, and the asterisk that this somehow is not a legit record takes away from the accomplishment of what they did. If this new 26:38 record is proved to be true, I think it is as legit as any. They had the balls to go do this when they had every reason not to. Lighter highways would make it easier for cops to spot one high-speed car rather than have the ability to blend in. I just do not like the notion that this record is somehow less important or less valuable than others before. It just seems as if the tone of this video is "you broke the record, but it doesn't really count because we did it 'the right way' of being illegal." Good vid. Not to mention even now, DOT is still out there pulling trucks over all the time. You have weigh scales to stop at. Anyone mad at these guys for taking advantage of a opportunity is just jealous they didn't do it. 26 hours and 38 minutes is very impressive. Much respect for them going out and beating the record

Alfredo Ortiz the records with the old suits were never thrown out they just took longer to break most of the records have been broken again after the outlaw of the old faster suits. It really wasn’t a good analogy for Edd to use cause it proves that this record will probably still get broken eventually.

@@209alfredo2091 yes they should be cause the swimming federations said it was within the rules to wear them, times went down they went dam times to fast and took them away still doesn't discredit the record holders, record is still the record

Dr. Skillz yea I agree. He sounds a bit salty, even last time he seemed more bothered than he needed to be while trying to take the high road and say he’s not. Now with this asterisk bullshit. That was as bad as Alex Roy going around and saying he has reason to believe Ed’s run wasn’t legit, it just instills doubt in people who listen. And Ed’s using his large platform to do that.

  • @joeykowalsk6812

This is a record, no asterisk needed. The original Cannonball was an outlaw race. There were several cars competing at the same time. Fast FWD to many years later and Rawlings/Collins made solo runs and beat the record. To me it's somewhat of an advantage if there isn't a pack of cars going balls out. A few years later Ed sets the solo record that stand for years. A new attempt is made in late 2019 . It;s successful and a new record is set, This one bothered me. They had spotters across the country, essentially running block for them to run flat out without a worry of their speed, that's a hell of an advantage. So, if the record doesn't account for ANY advantages, then all bets are off. So if they can make time during a pandemic so be it. Unless you want to put rules across the board. The record time only counts, if you do it during these months, leaving between these times, driving these cars, etc etc, Just my opinion.
