I had a Smooth Collie and he was such a good sweet dog. He was so compassionate and emotional tuned into me and I will never forget him . I recently lost him during Covid and I will never forget my buddy. He was very chatty and loving purr almost like a kitten when petted. He was taught agility and really loved it. He also liked running and playing tag. I really miss him terribly.

@@davidrobinson7112 Thanks for your message. I do love collies, and I might get another in the future. It's just that I am getting older and don't know if I have the stamina or the finances for another buddy. I think having a collie is a privilege and want it to go well for everyone. So right now I will wait until the opportunity is right. I think losing my buddy during Covid was one of the most difficult thing I had to do. I really think collies have the most dynamic ,playful, and soulful attitude of all dogs and they are very caring and charming dogs to own.

My Nellie, tri collie, was an amazing therapy dog here in Ottawa Canada and I can relate to this great video. Nellie and I were often chosen for special assignments, including a case of a 4 year old boy who had a week to live, and had stopped talking out of pain and sadness at being very sick with cancer. Nellie helped the little boy find his voice, and the parents last week with their son was improved, as the boy talked about his Nellie visit. We visited children hospital working closely with medical teams and Child Life Specialists, in the trauma unit. We also spent time in the Rehabilitation Center with head injury clients. Nellie read with kids under Reading Education Assistance Dog (R.E.A.D.) program for 3 years, connected to troubled teen Highschool program, worked with psychologists and teachers assisting kids in the spectrum when transitioning into the school program. I have to say over the past 12 years as a therapy dog handler with my sheltie Marcus and tri collie Nellie, this is the first really well made video that perfectly explains the love of collies and therapy dog volunteering. Thank you for sharing your wonderful story with your collies. Sadly I put my Nellie down in July but am pleased to say I will be bringing home my new blue merle puppy, Luna, on Nov 5th

On the other hand ? Not being 'popular' can also mean there are fewer 'opportunistic' breeders out here that breed them ONLY because they're 'popular' which can lead to unhealthy dogs because - to those types of 'breeders' - it's ALL about 'quantity' and NOT 'quality' !

Loved your very informative video. One of my bucket list items is to train one of my rough collies to be a therapy dog. 2 of my previous Collies visited nursing homes and were wonderful with residents, aides and visitors. Collies seem to have a way of sensing how gentle they must be with people they meet whether that person is a new baby or elderly person who they must be very calm and gentle with or a rowdy teen who wants some rowdy playtime or someone who is hurting or emotional and just needs a furry soul to connect with. My current tri male may be the one with more time and training on my part. We also adopt double merle special needs Collies who are often deaf or have vision issues. Please keep up the great work in being a wonderful embassador for the Rough Collie.

It's good that collies are not as popular as they were when the tv show was on. People will impulse buy or adopt dogs that are in popular tv shows. That happened recently with Game of Thrones Inuit dogs (dire wolves). Many of those dogs ended up in shelters. It's very rare (I checked) to see a stray collie in a city shelter.

And something else, collies from working lines, can be therapy dogs due to the fact that they have high prey drive and herding instinct?

In my experience, collies do not have a high prey drive - on the contrary, they are very gentle and protective of other animals. Our two collies pay no attention to cats, birds, or small dogs. In fact, the small dogs are almost always behave aggressively towards my dogs and they just ignore it.

@@26snoopy82 Hey Snoopy, A very good family friend of mine breeds rough collies, we've been given Collies from them my entire life, they're very kind hearted Christian people. Long story short they reference www.stirlingcollies.com/ on their website, for me that's confirmation enough to know they're good people as well. A lot of breeders here prefer to meet the family before they sell them a pup. Read through their site I linked then contact them, maybe they can help point you in the right direction for your region as a few breeders here in Minnesota have helped start up other people across the country. I must say function over aesthetics is the rational way of choosing a service dog. Their site on the home page that link sends you to states "Although a Collie lives in your home, they are a working dog and are sold and used for purposes such as Breeding, Guarding, Herding, Security, Service, and Therapy." Read their site, contact them with your intentions/hopes, if you give them a reason to feel like they could help in any way them I'm sure they will.

@@26snoopy82 I would be very cautious of the breeder recommended in a response you received on this string. A dog that is eligible for AKC registration is not the only quality you should look, for and before selecting from this or any other breeder, I urge you to investigate further. I notice there are a couple of negative reviews of this breeder online, so proceed with caution and never buy sight unseen. True quality collies are difficult to come by. I urge you to research and to visit collie conformation dog shows when they are held in your area, and talk to the professional breeders you meet there. Note that a quality breeder will also be very selective about who they sell to and they will require you to have your pup spayed or neutered. Most will also provide a contract that specifies that if you give up your collie for any reason, it must be returned to the breeder. Research and be very selective. Also, if you are looking for a service dog, it is recommended you research that as well. There is a big difference between a professionally trained service dog, which is covered by the Americans With Disability Act, and an emotional assistance dog or therapy dog, which is not. The latter two types are not allowed to accompany the handler into restaurants and supermarkets. Seeadata.org/guide/service-animals-and-emotional-support-animals Good luck!
