The Rough Collie is a breed of dog that is believed to have originated in Scotland in the 1800s. These dogs were initially bred to herd sheep in the rugged terrain of the Scottish Highlands. They were highly prized for their intelligence, agility, and ability to work in harsh weather conditions.
The Rough Collie is a descendant of the Scottish Shepherd dog, which was a cross between the Greyfriars Bobby dog and the Bearded Collie. The breed was later refined by crossing it with the Borzoi, which gave it its distinctive long muzzle and elegant gait.
The Rough Collie became popular in the United Kingdom and the United States in the early 1900s, thanks to the popular children's book and TV show, Lassie. The show, which ran from 1954 to 1973, featured a Rough Collie named Lassie who would rescue her owners from dangerous situations. The show was a huge hit and made the Rough Collie one of the most recognizable breeds in the world.
Physical Characteristics
The Rough Collie is a medium to large-sized breed of dog that typically weighs between 50 to 75 pounds and stands between 22 to 26 inches tall at the shoulder. They have a distinctive long, narrow head with a pointed snout and upright ears that give them a regal appearance. Their eyes are almond-shaped and come in shades of brown or blue, depending on the dog's coat color.
The Rough Collie's most striking feature is its long, flowing coat, which is made up of two layers. The top layer is made up of long, coarse guard hairs that protect the dog from the elements. The undercoat is soft and dense and provides insulation against the cold. The Rough Collie's coat comes in a variety of colors, including sable, tricolor, blue merle, and white.
Temperament
The Rough Collie is known for its gentle and affectionate personality. They are loyal and devoted to their owners and are great with children and other pets. They are also very intelligent and eager to please, which makes them easy to train.
Rough Collies are not aggressive dogs and are generally good with strangers. However, they can be protective of their family and may bark at strangers or other animals that come near their home. They are not usually recommended as guard dogs, as they are more likely to alert their owners to danger than to attack intruders.
Training
The Rough Collie is a highly intelligent breed of dog that is easy to train. They are eager to please and respond well to positive reinforcement training methods. It is important to start training your Rough Collie early and to be consistent with your training methods. They do not respond well to harsh training methods or physical punishment.
Socialization is also essential for the Rough Collie. They need to be exposed to a variety of people, animals, and environments from a young age to prevent them from becoming fearful or anxious. They are highly social dogs and do best in households where they are not left alone for long periods.
Health
Like all breeds of dogs, the Rough Collie is prone to certain health problems. Some of the most common health issues include hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, and Collie Eye Anomaly. It is important to buy your Rough Collie from a reputable breeder who tests their dogs for these health issues.
In addition to genetic health problems, the Rough Collie can also be prone to obesity. It is important to feed your Rough Collie a healthy diet and to provide them with plenty of exercise to prevent them from becoming overweight.
Conclusion
The Rough Collie is a beloved breed of dog that has captured the hearts of people around the world. Their gentle and affectionate personality, combined with their striking appearance, makes them an ideal family pet. They are highly intelligent and easy to train, which makes them well-suited for a variety of activities, including herding, obedience, and agility.
If you are considering adding a Rough Collie to your family, it is important to do your research and find a reputable breeder who tests their dogs for genetic health issues. With proper training, socialization, and care, the Rough Collie can be a loyal and loving companion for many years to come.
Thank you for watching!
Love your Dog!

They are incredibly smart dogs, they are very friendly as well- to the point where mine will go try say hi to hostile dogs and I have to stop him! Very caring around small kids, and are loyal to the end. They need a walk at least once a day, preferably 2.

If you brush your pupper at least three times a week you won’t have the big shed problem. Plus it gets mulch and twigs and pine needles out. Big thing is don’t yell at them their feelings get hurt easy. Mine would go hide. I had to tell my hubby not to call him like he’s mad or the dog takes his time coming. Be aware of the snotty strut. Mine would walk like he’s on the runway like a model ,one foot in front of the other like a supermodel showing off. Specially after getting groomed. In all they are so adorable. One thing I didn’t know is that they squeak bark. It’s funny to hear a 70 lb male unfixed squeaking like a tiny dog.

Prices are a lot higher than that - you're going to pay $2000 to $3000 for most purebred dogs. If you're only paying $500, you're not getting a well cared for, well bred dog.

@@susantunbridge4612Wow $3k for a pet quality dog? That’s pretty crazy. I’ve seen most around me in Canada upwards most was $1,500, around my area.
