Theory of Mind | False Belief Tasks & Understanding Mental States

In this video, we will be talking about an important concept in the field of developmental psychology: theory of mind. Theory of mind is one's ability to understand other's mental states. This is typically studied using false belief tasks, most commonly the Sally-Anne test, and allows researchers to see if children can think about the character's perspectives.

I still dont understand why the child would think the marble is in the box instead of the basket despite not seeing or being told that it was prior to returning

Because they only see it from their own perspective...as explained. They know it's in the box so believe everyone sees it this way.

The child is watching the story so when they ask where sally will look for the ball, the child doesnt realise that the question is where does sally look for the marble they know the answer so they ignore the fact that the question was "where does sally look for the ball" and just give the answer the box because they k ow its in the box as they are watching the whole story unfold. The answer would obviously be sally would look for the ball qhere she left it before she went for a walk. But this needs an understanding of someone elses understanding of the situtaion hence the childs answer isnt correct.

Another example is life a poor country where people with power and nepotism get into managerial seats. And then you get bad traffic roads and signs - because the person in charge thinks that because he knows the rules of particular road, that everyone else who drives must know them too. It is about making decision to make narrow road because they drive small car and they are unable to imagine that road will be used by the huge trucks, buses, coaches of all kinds, and bicycles and that narrow road will be problem for those who must park there.

What part you can't understand? Perhaps the example is not intuitive enough and some another analogy could be used. Let me think. It is the issue of watching the mystery movie where everything is explained at the end. Or crime series like Twin Peaks. And everyone who watched the show will know who killed Laura Palmer. Well - people who never watched the series will need to watch 2 seasons to find out who has done it. The problem here is that you cannot understand (someone with undeveloped theory of mind) why would someone must watch 2 season to discover the murderer - because you watched the series in 1992 and you know who done it.

That's not the point, it's where she would first be expected to look. She left it in her basket, so she will expect it to still be in her basket. A child will expect her to look in the box first, because they believe that everybody shares the same perception as them, also called egocentrism.

Think about for a moment. What kind of life would be if we should check everything in our life is in the order and at its place? We would end up with heavy OCD issue - where we check every single detail in our house in order to asure ourselves that nothing was stolen or relocated. We cannot check everything -because otherwise we would be left paralyzed with routines. this is what is happening at the airports - because security must check everyone so there are rows and delays.
