Theodor Herzl: The Zionist Dream of a Jewish State | History of Israel Explained | Unpacked

What is Zionism, and why is it so controversial? And how (and why) did Theodor Herzl, a secular writer, who didn’t know anything about Judaism, transform an ancient longing into a modern political movement that resulted in the establishment of the State of Israel?
Short answer - antisemitism.
Herzl was present at one of the most explosive trials of the day, which came to be known as the Dreyfus Affair. In the case, Alfred Dreyfus, a high ranking Jewish officer in the French army, was falsely accused of espionage and sentenced to life imprisonment on Devil’s Island (he was later exonerated).
It wasn’t just the trial that got Herzl started on his journey towards Zionism. The cries of “Death for the Jew” that were casually hurled around on the streets of Paris made him understand that a Jewish state was necessary to remove the problem of anti-semitism entirely.
Herzl was seen as a crazy man in his time, and he certainly had some offbeat ideas, such as the idea for a mass conversion to Christianity (which was swiftly despatched), but his vision for a Jewish state became reality.
A modern day Moses, Herzl never saw the country he envisaged, but due to his actions, and the actions of the Zionist leaders that followed, in 1948 the State of Israel came into being.

@Mo Thunder Zionism is not terrorism, thats like calling Nobel Peace Prize winners war criminals. Zionism is the idea Jews should establish a state in part of their historic homeland. If a Native American reservation declare independence, would that be terrorism? Zionists did everything peacefully and intelligently. Hertzl specifically stated Israel should get its land peacefully by buying it. It was when the Arabs began programming in the 1920's, and when they attacked in 1948, that created the conflict.

Zionism definitely increased anti-Zionism. The term Anti-Semitism can be said of Jews who drive out Palestinians from their homeland of Palestine because Semite refers to the languages of the region, of which Palestinians are part of. Anti-semite cannot mean anti-Jew - it refers to all those of Semite language region. The term has been co-opted and is part of why there is resentment towards the new invaders

You are mentioning that Herzl had no Jewish education, which is not totally accurate. Until the age of 10 Herzl went to a Jewish school. His grandfather was a religious Jew who went to the same Synagogue as Rav Jehuda Alkalaj. He accompanied his father regularly on Shabbat and on the holidays to Synagogue. He read the Haftara on his Barmizwa in the Dohany Synagogue in Pest (Budapest). His family was assimilated, but traditional.

Interesting slant on the religion of Judaism. If anyone reads the history of European religions prior the conversion of the African religions; Christianity, Islam and Judaism you might be enlightened. There is nothing wrong with converting to any religion, but for people to usurp the religion of others then claim it as their own only creates problems. Such as those that continue to exist today.

"After 1881 assassination of Alexander II pogroms started" (cf Fiddler on the Roof set in 1905) The British offered Herzl land in Uganda and he said Yes. The medieval Russian Jews wouldn't hear of anywhere but Palestine. The Russians had been living in their own isolated state (the Pale) and had the skills to reproduce that self-sufficient community. "The Zionist project could never have succeeded without the Russian Jews" I'm only half way through it. All quotes are paraphrased. PS :- The proposal (1903 Uganda idea) faced strong opposition particularly from the Russian delegation who stormed out of the meeting (6th Zionist Congress)

After those numerous massacres n violent riots compounded by the then very recent holocaust they prolly didn't want to allow those same people to lord it over them and continue to take them out with impunity. That amount would fit in less than half of Jerusalem and leave the rest of the country empty.

Nah, he and a lot of jews were just hoping to escape persecution. You know, like the current islamic immigrants flooding europe? Aren't anti-immigrant protestors seen as racist meat-heads by the current accepted media? Palestinian arabs persecuted the jews since 1920. You really think after those massacres n riots and the then recent holocaust that they would let themselves be ruled over by those same persecutors w/impunity?? It was merely for survival whatever else anyone theorizes.

Cause of the system they were smart and fawners surplus their religious tellings (which is altered not a real though) they just capture most of finance system of nations such as the interest system they brought in America and World copied that too and now it is used everywhere their are other reasons too like Jews never like minorities like Christians and Muslims at one time later when these minorities extended to emperors and basically revenged Jews & that hatred continued for centuries

Theodor Herzl (2 May 1860 - 3 July 1904) was an Austro-Hungarian Jewish journalist and political activist who was the father of modern political Zionism. Herzl formed the Zionist Organization and promoted Jewish immigration to Palestine in an effort to form a Jewish state. “We shall have to spirit the penniless population across the border by procuring employment for them in the transit country’s while denying it any employment in our own country. Both the process of expropriation and the removal of the poor must be carried out discreetly and circumspectly.” (Theodore Herzl June 1895 - The complete diaries of Theodore Herzel Volume I page 88). “It is essential that the sufferings of Jews. . . become worse. . . this will assist in realization of our plans. . .I have an excellent idea. . . I shall induce antisemites to liquidate Jewish wealth. . . The antisemites will assist us thereby in that they will strengthen the persecution and oppression of Jews. The antisemites shall be our best friends”. (From the Theodor Herzl Diary, Part I, pp. 16)

Yeah but his was created our of pride of the skin, not consciousness. Yes to fight oppression. But he was a pan africanist, same as a pan europeanist, but Marcus mosiah Garvey blasphemed utilizing the Bible as a tool for political purposes. You also see this with the nation of Islam and Elijah Muhammad, as well as ancient Egyptian religion inside the black community. Some used to justify racism and superiority of skin. Rastafarianism used Christianity, Islam, Hinduism and kemeticism, mostly christianity and Haille Selassies believed davidic roots.

    B. S. There are no non israeli anti semites. Jews are a religious cult, not a separate race of people. Are all christians white?.. all Buddhists asian? The only jews I have ever seen were blue eyed and/or very light skinned. I only see ones that resemble hebrews on t.v. Palestinians ARE semetic, as are arabs. Iranians and iraqis are persian, jews seem to be eastern european.

  • @retirosierra

The reason why you only see “white” jews, is because they jump out at you. Sephardic jews look Latin. All with the surname ending in -EZ (Lopez etc) are thought to have Sephardic jewish ancestry. Mizrai Jews look entirely Middle Eastern. Ethiopian jews Ethiopian, etc. You overlook them, probably because of thinking that they are Yeminite, which they are - as well as being jewish. Jews are not a religion nor a cult nor a “race”, but a tribe, a family, sharing a collective historical experience, where ever they lived. Arabs can be semitic, don’t forget that in the 7th century they spread to Northern Africa, which was Amazigh before (“Berbers”), and are a very blonde and white people. Just as “Iran” stems from Aryan. “Semitic” comes from Sem, a son of Noah. It goes without saying that after 4000 years, his descendants have spread into all colours and shades, and of course family feuds.
