    For the issue/question discussed at 35:00, I think the reason criticism from our partner feels like an attack and/or earth shattering is because, as a society, we (women) are unconsciously programmed with the idea that we should be perfect. From childhood (at least in the black community) the expectation is that girls will do well in school and boys will cut up. When girl misbehave the conversation is of shock, but when boys misbehave, the messaging is ‘boys will be boys’. Then fast forward into adulthood, the message when it comes to relationships is, “What you won’t do, another will”, the existence of side chicks, strip clubs, etc.) All unconsciously creating the mindset that we must be “perfect” and we don’t measure up, there is another waiting in the wing to replace us. So, on a deeper level and even unbeknownst to us, we see criticism as not us not meeting the standard that has been placed on us all our lives, but also a possible pathway to infidelity.

  • @lifeofneu1438

    @lifeofneu1438

    You ain lie! I know I'm not perfect but when I called out, it feels so crushing because there's so much placed on us women from childhood. No one ever says "girls will be girls". Proverbs 31, every church mother and their advice to the women. There's a meme about women not being able to admit when we're wrong, but lowkey, a part of that is because of societal conditioning that men will make their mistakes, but we don't have that same window of grace as women.

    @59:23 - Two things - 1) Yes, society did not treat Black men kindly in those days. But Black women dealt with racism as well. 2) The whole Suzie Homemaker thing was not a reality for most Black women in the 50s. A lot of them worked outside the home, too.

  • @nca4794

    @nca4794

    4 жыл бұрын

    That's true, but it doesn't mean the principles and expectations to "make a home" were different just because you worked. Employed outside or working for the family inside, there was still the idea that being a good woman meant catering to the needs of the family, especially their men, first. That's why so many women in the next generation started to reject marriage and motherhood in the 60s. Plus, there's a cultural element with her family also. I grew up in a West Indian family, and making a plate is seen as showing reverence to the husband as the head of the household. I know men who expect their plate before the children have eaten. I wasn't raised in a household like that, but it's no less real than taking your shoes off at the door.

  • @boomboom6577

    Facts. In fact, the majority of black women worked outside of the household after the great migration north. And the myth of the mother homemaker was facilitated by black women domestic workers who cared for the house holds of white women. And yes, to the commenter who pointed out that black women were still expected to maintain a home for their children and husband. And when people assessed the state of black America, they blamed black women for working and displacing men from the workforce AND the household. The Moynihan Report is the most glaring and influential example that.

    When Devale said, "find someone who has found happiness in themselves," I literally started crying. 😢😢 I am diagnosed with major reoccurring depression and general anxiety disorder. I struggle with finding happiness in myself all of the time, and I wondered if it was even possible for me to be in a relationship with someone because they almost never live up to my expectations or I start relying on them to make me happy when they really can't. But I don't want to be alone because I don't have a lot emotional support outside of myself. Waiting until I "fix" things in my life is a slow and isolating process. So I don't know what to do, and I get scared when I meet someone I like. I want to wait, but I need love in my life outside of just myself to pick me up when I can't do it.

    Just know you'll be all right. You don't have to isolate yourself. I understand where you're coming from - especially when you don't have the support. Know that you're worth love, just gotta find it in you first. God made you special and He made you YOU for a reason. Once you find your light, you'll find your purpose... once you find your purpose- you won't be so focused on what you didn't have, but what power you hold to be great on your own. You're worth it. If you believe just a little bit- it can help. Don't let your depression define you, once you let go of its power over you you'll find strength you didn't know you had. You're here for a reason & you'll get to see it if you keep your head to the sky. Remener... love attracts love

    You are enough! Happiness doesn’t even come from ourselves but from God our Father. When He gives us joy nobody can take it away. Looking for Jesus will allow you to find yourself. I tried it your way once looking to my husband to find my happiness but it wasn’t until I began to focus on my faith and my Creator that I finally realized it’s not about me or my husband...there’s a bigger picture and purpose ❤️. However, he doesn't cook, wash dishes, do laundry or clean the house (unless absolutely necessary) and I'm totally fine with that. Not only do I cook daily, I make his plate for him. Not because he demands it but because I choose to. He works full time AND is a full time Pastor and he takes very good care of me financially, emotionally and spiritually. While I understand the theory of how a black man is made to feel out in the world (reminder: we are a step below you) and his home should be his refuge, we ain’t sitting around twiddling our thumbs... well I’m watching this KZread now but I’m an entrepreneur in my own right. I am glad they're not putting up a fake front about how relationships really are, like how many people do on social media, then behind the scenes they are screaming and miserable and toxic. Many times people have fights, don't talk to each other, irritate each other... the mature thing is to know the limits of each other, recognize that each person has their own inner life which they keep to themselves, to have a base set of rules about fighting and disagreement and to give each other benefit of doubt.
