CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Thelma (Geena Davis) and Louise (Susan Sarandon) hold hands and drive their car off the cliff, leaving their lives and the police behind in the dust.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon play Thelma and Louise, two working-class friends who together have planned a weekend getaway from the men in their lives. Thelma's husband, Darryl (Chris McDonald), is an overbearing oaf, and Louise's boyfriend, Jimmy (Michael Madsen), simply will not commit. Though the road trip starts out as a good time, the pair eventually wind up at a bar. A tipsy Thelma ends up in the parking lot of the bar with a would-be rapist. Louise shoots the man dead. The two decide that they have no choice but to go on the run. They eventually meet up with a young criminal named J.D. (Brad Pitt), whose cowboy spirit rubs off on the timid Thelma. The pair is pursued by a police officer (Harvey Keitel) sympathetic toward their plight. He chases them to the Grand Canyon, where the women make a fateful decision about their lives. Directed by Ridley Scott, Thelma & Louise brought first-time screenwriter Callie Khouri many accolades including the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.

It always happens to me every time I see this movie again: the tears begin to flow without brakes at the last scene .... one of the best endings in the history of cinema! Thanks Susan and Geena!!!
Contrary to some understandable criticisms, I don't agree that this film ending romanticizes suicide. Even though it's certainly imaginable enough that a sequel-hinting-cliffhanger was possible, it made the most profound statement that there's always a choice even at the end of the line. I can agree that they died free. But they lived on as legends. Happy 25th Anniversary, Thelma & Louise. 🌹

Suicide gets a bad rap. As of writing this, there are 7.7 billion humans. The carrying capacity of the only planet we can live on may be as low as 100 million. That means that each of us have to justify our continued ravaging of the ecosystem 77 times more than, say, people did as little as 300 years ago. I personally am not that special. If you don’t have a good reason to be here, like someone materially dependent on you, as I have, or you’re making a contribution to the ecosystem’s survival worth 77 normal lifetimes, well… ?

“Weak”? “Selfish”? I don’t understand. If you’re saying, hey, don’t kill yourself; instead get hyper-busy making your life’s work to save the planet’s habitability worth what 77 people in other ages could’ve performed in their own lifetimes, I agree. Basically impossible, but agreed. There is no easy solution. I’m flawed. You’re probably not using your life anywhere near 77x more valuably than the average person in prior generations did to save our descendants (and those of a million other species,) so that means you’re flawed too. Each human life in the grand scheme of things is no longer precious; it’s a horrific liability. It’s morally wrong to say it, my instincts utterly oppose it, I DON’T want to believe it, but I don’t see any other reality in the aggregate. Such are tragically the times we were born into. Good Luck. ✨
I remember watching this as a kid and not really understanding that they were going to die, I thought that they were just going to try to get away somehow by driving off the cliff. Amazing movie though and the acting is outstanding.

@@northwestprof60 you need to rewatch this film. Ridley Scott made this movie, not that idiot Michael Bay. Ridley’s films are not to be taken literal. In fact most film plots are not always to be taken literal. The theme in this movie was about the incredible bond and friendship between Thelma & Louise. Nearly 90% of this movie would not be reality. For all we know this entire movie could have been a dream sequence of Thelma’s as she daydreams about leaving her emotionally abusive husband Daryl. Great director leave a lot for the viewer to figure out and examine. The ending is not glorying suicide and probably never intended to represent death. You have to think beyond the literal car going over the cliff. It was just a continuation of their journey.

Never tolerate an abusive partner.
The two close ups starting at 1:52 followed by the foot stomp on the accelerator were obviously filmed while the car was stationary, and intended for the beginning of the run. The editor must have felt they fit better just prior to the edge of the cliff, as kind of a 'double down' moment....

One of the Greats. :)
As a juxtaposition of death, freedom, and exaltation, this finale reminds me of the end of Spartacus, where a legally free Varinia encounters her crucified, dying husband, shows him their newborn baby, and promises that she'll teach him to remember his father and what they dreamed of.
What a waste of a Thunderbird. :(
you can't help but cry when you see that powerful moment
0:50 "Let's just keep going, Wayne." 1:05 "Okay, Garth." 1:30-1:39-1:47-2:00 "Hey, we don't wanna end the movie like this." "Yeah. Let's do the happy ending." "Yeah, yeah."
