The Zoom H6 Audio Recorder - Complete Review and Sample Audio!

Ғылым және технология

In this video I will demonstrate the audio quality of the Zoom H6 portable six track recorder with interchangeable Mics.
I shot this video using the Rode NT-1 studio condenser microphone plugged into one of the XLR ports in the zoom unit.
I also take some time to test out and demonstrate the audio form the H6-XY capsule and the MSH-6 Mid/side capsule along with various other demonstrations which are at the end of the video.
If you're a KZreadr, looking to get better quality audio in your productions, a Podcaster looking to connect multiple microphones in a portable recorder at home or in the field the Zoom H6 is a great option for you.
Note I mention that it doesn't come with a power adaptor. Keep in mind that viewers have pointed out that you can power it via the provided mini usb port using an iphone charger or even usb battery pack.....
NOTE: Towards the end of the video I demonstrate a lapel microphone connected into the XLR port on the side. Now the official word by rode is that you should use the Rode VXLR+ 3.5mm Mini-Jack to 3-Pin XLR(M) Adaptor w/ Power Convertor. It will downgrade the 12V phantom power to 3.5V which is the recommended amount of power for their lav mic's. This is a safer option in order to avoid blowing out your lav mic...

    Hello - excellent review. I'm looking to boost my audio quality. I do a lot of recording in a vehicle and find I'm getting a lot of ambient noise. I'm looking to clean that up. Would you be so kind as to give me a recommendation for a set up that would increase the voice audio and cut out a lot of the background road noise from the vehicle? Thanks again for the excellent review. All the best, Cheers Rick

    Hi there, thanks for checking out the video. I am a little confused as you mention that you want to use a USB microphone and the H6 when you can plug a USB mic right into the computer so don't need the h6 for that. So if you are happy to use the h6 you can consider an XLR microphone instead. Technically they would be the best in terms of fidelity of sound. So something like the Rode NT1, Rode Podcaster or Sure SMB XLR mic plugged into the Zoom would be premium. Now if you want to avoid using the H6 for convenience and just plug and play then a usb mic would be great. I haven't tested the new Sure MV7 but I thought it was pretty close to the legendary SMB in sound so I would have thought that would be a good pick. Next up the Rode NT USB is a good option. I haven't tested any of the Blue mics or apogee so can't say but I know they are pretty good. I have been sent a few microphones from BOYA recently and despite the low cost have been impressed with the quality of these mics. I did a review on the BM 700 which you can see here if you are interested: kzread.info/dash/bejne/dqt20Kmxc7G8drA.html If you have time listen to the audio and let me know if you think it is better than the Shure, it was plugged right into my Macbook Pro and recorded in Garage band for the demo. No EQ

    Great to hear. I find that if you keep the inputs under 5/10 there is no inherent line noise or hiss. Some early analogue synths have a bit of noise to deal with but again if you watch the levels you can get a very clean recording.

    wow thank you so much for that last section with the tested audio, i was curious about how each mic set up would sound especially with the sound effects. Do you recommend using the wind muffler (foam thing) on top of XY mic when filming indoors? I have mine on but i'm scared it'll muffle the audio instead of it being as crisp as it can be.

  • @Touchtechnologyreview

    @Touchtechnologyreview

    4 жыл бұрын

    You're welcome. Thanks for checking out the video! I don't think the windshield would noticeably muffle the sound in any way so if you wanted to you could leave it on. Having said that I tend to leave it off in doors just to ensure there is nothing in the way of the mic, however subtle it may be. The only benefit of using the windshield indoors would be when using it for voice over to reduce plosives when talking into it at a distance of 30cm or less so for any other recordings of music room ambience product unboxing etc I tend to leave it off.

    I had a Zoom H6 for a few days used to record audio on location. The worst design flaw I found was the channel volume "resetting" itself to zero when booting up via line level XLR input. I had the misfortune to notice this fault while on the shoot (from then on I had to keep slighty moving the dial input every time I switched the unit on to "wake up" the correct channel volume). I had to put tape around my XLR connectors to "pad out" the connection to try and prevent my cables from accidentally being pulled out because of the lack of XLR push-locks. Also the pre-amps are a bit meh, didn't cut it so had to power my mics via my sound devices mixer instead. It just about did the job... but 2 days with such a flakey machine was enough for me and sent it back!

    I've been looking for audio interfaces for a while to be able to record my piano. I wanted to get a set of SE07's and a SSL2. After seeing this review I wonder if it wouldn't be better to get this ZOOM 6 instead. If I combine it with two SE7 I can use the 'on board' mics to pic up either a second instrument, voice, or maybe the soundboard of the piano to get a fuller sound. Or I can just use it the same way as I would use the SSL2 but be more flexible/mobile and also be able to use more phantom powered mics. Am I missing something or is the sound quality much better from a device like the SSL? Would love to get some input on this.

  • @Touchtechnologyreview

    No post production in the audio. The echo is really more to do with the environment that I recorded in. It is a large open space around 30m SQ. Hardwood floors and no soft furnishings etc. As far as the silibence goes on the S sounds it may have something to do with the mic but also my voice. I do produce a fair amount of Ss as most people do so really you do have to EQ it in post to get rid of it on any mic.

  • @Touchtechnologyreview

    @Touchtechnologyreview

    2 жыл бұрын

    Great to hear you have been enjoying the H6. It has been great for me still using it! The room is pretty bad acoustically and due to the hard floors and shutters along with the open space has a bit too much natural reverb. In this recording I got around it by making sure I was as close as possible to the mic. I was speaking at a distance of around 10cm. If I go back to 15cm or 20cm then you tend to hear more reverb. I didn't apply the usual effect rack on this recording either as I wanted people to hear what it sounds like as is. For other recordings I do on my channel when I can't quite get the mic up that close I have been using some post production software called deverberate by Acon. I cover it at the 6 minute mark of the following video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/fYar2LeGYq3epbg.html

    I haven't tested it but I think if you get the appropriate cables which would include a TRS to TRRS cable such as the Rode SC07 plug that into the lightening to 3.5 adaptor cable by apple it should do the trick. What I have tested and can confirm works is plugging the Zoom H6 into the iphone using the usb port. I got the Apple lightening to usb camera adaptor plugged the zoom in and most software titles including the rode reporter app, iMovie, Garage Band, Voice Memo's etc pick up the zoom H6 as the audio source. So I would assume live streaming software would also pick it up. However not having tested with streaming I can't be 100% sure.

I then plugged a TRRS (m) to TRRS (m) cord into the adapter and iPhone headphone jack (I was using an iPhone 6 where they still exist, but this would also work with the lightning to 3.5mm adapter). The live-stream went well. There was one hitch - monitoring. If I were to do it over again using this setup, I would add a splitter to plug in headphones. That said, I think I am going to buy the other USB 3.0 adapter (I got the older lightning-usb camera adapter and it didn't work for me) so that you can have digital audio and monitor without adding a splitter.

    If you place the zoom unit in the middle of a table in between those who are speaking the built in mics will capture the audio quite well. However the further away the microphone is from the subject voice the more room noise, echo and environmental noise will be present in the recording. So in a noisy restaurant it will not sound great. As such you should consider using a seperate microphone for each speaker. If it is a podcast style of recording you can get xlr podcast mics and put them on stands about 30-50cm away from each person. Another option is to use Lapel microphones and plug each one into the XLR ports of the zoom. Up to four can be used. However keep in mind you may need to down the phantom power on the XLR ports using Rode VXLR Pro 3.5mm TRS to XLR with Phantom-Power Converter. This is because most wired lav mics use phantom power but on 4w. The XLR ports can be set to 12 or 24 Watts and can overpower the lavs. Otherwise you can try to find wired lav mics that do not need phantom power and use a basic XLR to 3.5 adaptor. I know its getting confusing but just laying out the options for you.
