The young pope: "Not him, me" (episode 3 - opening)

Lord, I don't care with what means, licit or illicit, they're all fine, I don't care about the Holy Spirit, whether He illumines me or not, I don't care about anything, I don't care about your opinions, or if I'm up to the task, or if I'm not an outsider or a longshot, I don't care if you think I'm weak, or a scoundrel, I don't care about loving my neighbor as myself, I will never love my neighbor as myself, I only care about one thing, Lord, that I, not the others, can be useful to You. I prayed some more, harder this time. I was praying so hard I nearly sh1t my pants. I had to glue my ass to my chair so as not to make a mess, I stared, straight to Dussolier and I said: God, not him, me. I looked at Spencer and I said: God, not him, me. I must have chanted those words a thousand times before they opened the voting again, like a mantra: not him, me, not him, me, not him, me, not him, me. And then, toward the end: not them, me. And now I'm the Pope. Not them. Me. Sister Mary would call it a miracle. Others would call it the answer to a prayer. But I don't know what to call it. They all went white when they heard the name I'd chosen, and I reveled in their fear. They were beginning to realize who I am, because that is the enormous error they committed: they chose a pope they didn't know. And today they began to understand. That is their tremendous sin: they chose a Pope they presumed they knew. I spoke my new name, Pius XIII, and they forgot to thank God because they thought that God had failed to illumine them. I forgot to thank God, because I didn't think God had illumined them either. I love myself more than my neighbor, more than God, I believe only in myself, I am the lord omnipotent: Lenny, you have illumined yourself! f*ck!

@@lauradana22 ok, (1), take your meds, you sound like an insane person. (2) context is required for this scene. if you've decided to take it at face value then so be it, but theres an entire season of character development that comes after this. you can examine what lenny's words here mean all you like, but he literally does confess directly to god in THE NEXT SCENE and take everything he says here back. I'm going to assume english isn't your first language since you obviously have had a hard time reading my initial comment, but if it is then I'd suggest you learn to read properly before you tell me to "shut the fuck up".

Listen, I believed you knew some basic ideas about religions before seeing the show. Sorry for being incoherent. I'll try again... The nature of "thought"( of consiousness, of being aware of your own existence) in all religious experiences it is not only rational. Every religion has a form of "revelation". For Christians it comes directly from God. God illuminates the individual. Actually, for all Abrahamic religions. In shamanic beliefs it is the trance the sman undergoes to separe himself from his body. Regardless of how they achieve this perspective and the words used to name the experience, it performs the same function: literally gainig another perspective than my own. Another awareness. Same goes for Nirvana. This is the sense of "illumined" here. Understanding without the rationality grown inside a single consciousness. A higher sense of understanding. Please keep this in mind when you read below. In all religions god is one and multiple at the same time, thus breaking the principle of identity or the first principle of logic. The Greeks had this idea, the Hindus have it. In Cristianity it is called the Holly Trinity. God, the Holly Spirit and Jesus are both the same person and separate persons at the same time. A shrink would probably tell you that this is very similar to their idea that the self is constituted in relation to others. The "others" are constituting factors for the "self image", in essence they guarantee your existence. The "I" cannot exist without the others, and that creates tension because you are having access only to your own perspective. This is the nature of Lenny's prayer. Struggling to understand his existence and somehow yet stumbling into it. Also, this is why he is so desperately seeking his parents. He needs their confirmation of his existence. He has not yet accepted revelation as coming from someone else but himself, and yet he is desperately seeking it, because he wonders at his own existences. "Not them, me!" I exist regardless of them. And then going back in this circle of paradoxical thought "I illumined myself, fuck!" This is circle of thought is the major theme and it spreads throught the show. In the next scene his disbelief in his own existence is causing him to be just more desperate. But God, had indeed illumined him, even if Lenny is yet to accept that. As he is yet to accept others in his life. Yeah, yeah, whatever you say!

@@lauradana22 alright, i agree with pretty much everything you wrote here. but I'm also not sure why your initial comment seemed to be so hostile? that's definitely an interesting and probably accurate way of thinking about the following scene i mentioned, but all i initially wrote was that this scene alone isn't really indicative of the character, and that some of the people in the comments section of this video seem to dismiss the show outright before watching it in its entirety. thank you for being more coherent in your response, but i still don't really understand what i wrote in the first place that incensed you...maybe I've misinterpreted something? illumen me further, please.

@Sanctus Paulus 1962 Wrong on both counts. "so that the man of God may be complete" - Your reading of this is wrong. If catholic doctrine was true, if Scripture alone was insufficient, then scripture " *can not* make you complete for every good work at all". It is very clear in this passage that what Paul says is that Scripture is a sufficient source on all doctrinal matters, otherwise even the mere possibility of it making you complete wouldn't be mentioned here. "stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by letter" Which doesn't disprove Sola Scriptura *at all* Where in that text does it say that there is any difference in the tradition Paul taught them by mouth and by scripture? They're both the same thing. This is an easy opt out by Catholics to pretend that all your modern traditions was somehow "never written down, and was only passed on by mouth", when they are clearly _not_ apostolic, and an undeniable evolution over thousands of years. We hold on to _apostolic_ teaching, while "You nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down." - Mark 7:13

God made everything, including film and television...with all the evils in the world you think God is so petty that he would go after artists? The entire church was created by art, the crucifix, the stations of the cross, eating the eucharist is a play re enacting the last supper, every sunday, God loves plays and loves actors. Jesus was the son of God, and he loved us in such a way that how could his Father not be even more loving? Jesus said it himself.
