The Y2K Scare

Ойын-сауық

Happy New Year! We're going back to the most notorious new year of millennials' lives (so far, at least) to relive the excitement of the new millennium and the anxiety about the "Y2K bug". Jenna talks about her memories of conversations about the potential consequences of the Y2K computer problem, what it was, and how it was eventually fixed before the clocks struck midnight on 12/31/99. She also reminisces on how she spent that memorable NYE and some of her favorite Y2K pop culture moments.

Honestly I remember asking my mother when I was six at the time, why everyone is freaking out after seeing two shoppers at the grocery preparing for the end of the world. I remember my mom sighing loudly and saying people just need something to cry about sometimes lol I was so confused because I took it so literal 😂

My dad bought a 5 gallon water jug and said ok, we’re ready for the apocalypse. That jug of water sat on our laundry room floor for at least 10 years.

omg y2k compliant! I forgot about that buzz term!! It's such a wild thing to look back upon. I remember there being a sense of urgency, but having no real understanding, of what it meant. All of the nostalgia content in social space referenced it at some point last year, and as I reflected back, I realized I still had no understanding. So I reached out to a friend in tech, and asked him to break it down for me, like I was a 5yr old, specifically what the y2k bug was, and how everything carried on, without impact. My poor brain couldn't compute what he was telling me either. It's one of those things I have to just accept, like gravity 🤣🤣

Love the fact that you mentioned Space Cases. Still love that show. There was a show on the WB (when it was still called that) in 1999 called Popular. In the pilot the character, Brooke, has a certain nail polish color on. Her friend tells her to change it, so she says she's going to start a zen/millenium style. I can't believe I still remember that.

The thing about The Matrix is that my friends and I (12-13) and many people thought it was just another Y2K cash grab. There were SO MANY films about the apocalypse coming out that year. I remember renting this move on VHS at a slumber party, and all of us kept falling asleep (it was one of those watch as many films as you could before the parents realized you only got PG-13 rated ones, and this was the midnight followup to teaching Mrs tingle lol) and waking up at the moment when Neo is meeting the oracle. My friends and I could not understand why this dude was just eating a cookie in this 1970s kitchen lol. It wasn't until a year or so later I actually watched it all the way through.

I had incorrectly remembered the Millennium album as NSYNC. "Attention all students, the Prom Theme is .... THE MILLENNIUM!" I was in eighth grade at the time. What a time to both live through and look back on. There was so much hard work, by so many people, to keep banks, military, computers, phones, anything, going. All the professionals worked so hard and as a child I had no idea.

I was asked to babysit that New Year’s Eve and I convinced the mother to bring her kids to my parents house because I was worried that something might happen and I didn’t wanna be responsible for the kids but myself lol I also went to the Backstreet Boys millennium tour in 1999. I stood in line to try to get tickets for the Toronto show was literally behind the last four people to get them balled my eyes out then for Christmas my Dad got me tickets for the Hamilton show also balled my eyes out and then at the concert I balled my eyes out. I still have the white Tshirt with the blue writing.

LGR (Lazy Game Reviews) did a video about y2k, apparently it was actually a thing, like that could happen with the infrastructure. he does tons of videos on "retro" tech and gaming if anyone's interested. Like the 90s and 2000s is retro 😅

Just want to give some context on the Y2K Bug. The concern was losing control of the nuclear weapons. Maybe they would go off, maybe they wouldn't. And it was a real threat. The reality is, it was a multi-international effort that the Y2K scenario didn't play out in devastation. There's a lot of info on the history of the solution that is studied in computer science classes, but in a nutshell: the US and UK came up with a band-aid solution. India then rolled out the solution (side note: this is why so much of tech support is India today). Unfortunately, the can was just kicked down the road and we may be facing the doomsday scenario again in the 2030s.

Happy new year!!! To try to explain how the Y2K computer bug would work, let’s say there a piece of pre-y2k code that determined if you were over 65 and would qualify for retirement benefits. The code might take the current year (simplified to the last 2 digits of the year as you said to save memory), subtract your birthday year (again last 2 digits), and make sure the different is at least 65. Ex. Let’s say you entered your birth year 1920 and the current year is 1999. The code would check if (99 - 20) is at least 65. Since it is, you would be determined eligible. However let’s look at how the code would work in the year 2000. The code would now check if (00 - 20) was at least 65. -20 is smaller than 65 so you would be deemed ineligible.

My family just put water, bologna, and milk in a cooler with ice for the new year. My dad had his gun loaded for when our criminal neighbors tried to rob us. I just thouht we would be sitting at home without electricity & water for a few days. (I was used to not having electricity bc we shared our home electricity with the church next door & the Reverend would not pay his half of the bill so we would be sitting in the dark for a day or two until my mom finally would call his house yelling at him to get him to pay.) None of those things happened & my dad didn't have to shoot anyone. We didn't even have a computer, too expensive for us.

I spent it on the roof with my dad and brother. Then when we came inside my mom was hysterically crying saying if the world had ended we wouldnt have been together. Talk about DRAMATIC.
