@donutlie315 it's the lowest common denominator for Xbox. Numbers would suggest is 1/3 of the power of a series X. Maybe you'd be generous and say it's 4/10s a PS5. Given the cyclical nature of all things (time is a flat circle, after all), I think the a pretty effective way for Microsoft to actually take the console world by storm is to do a new cool handheld. An Xbox handheld has never been done, and something like that would be really cool. I think the steam deck as the main competitor would be a good ring for them to enter as they sorta have the biggest visible hold on that market that isn't a switch. the sony handheld being streaming only makes it a very specific clientele, if xbox were able to do a cool handheld then that might give them a bit of life. I also am probably wrong.

For me, the Xbox is a beefy Roku that plays local multiplayer games. Unfortunately for them, this is solely because I grew up on their platform and subconsciously prefer it. There's no value prop for anyone that wasn't a hardcore console gamer in 2007. I think the OS is a nice and I enjoy the controller’s design…though such flowchart-y buying processes probably don’t make for a lot of sales 😅

Can't really breed complacency if it isn't a competitor in the first place. You could argue that it doesn't even qualify as competition in the first place now. If you compare it to Nintendo and Sony, it's pretty clear it hasn't been able to compete for easily a decade now.

I took my first few IT certificate prep classes in 2002 and I remember my teacher was absolutely convinced that game consoles wouldn't exist in 20 years and they would just be programs on our pc. This was when the Xbox was hot. We were all playing the new Halo game in our free time and bringing Xboxes and tvs to each others houses to play it. But I was also emulating NES on my pc and I liked pc better overall for gaming with 64 player BF1942 and dedicated servers. That old man knew what he was talking about though! As soon as playstation now and gamepass became a thing, I knew he was right and it's just a matter of time before the hardware disappears. One of his crazier predictions was that Microsoft would go under completely because people would get so fed up with them. The antitrust trial was still fresh so it wasn't unreasonable. Personally I hope that prediction comes true in our lifetime but they have a lot of money and are slippery snakes.

I loved my Xbox One S I got it cheap and it carried me through the last generation, I was eager to buy a series X but there was nothing to get me to pay upwards of $500 for what is seemingly just a newer Xbox. I eventually bought a PS5 because God Of War absolutely blew me away and even then I sort of regret buying it because since then nothings really come out to justify the upgrade. I don’t really see myself upgrading to the next generation if there’s no new games to lineup the hardware let alone buying something as worthless as a PS5 Pro. If these companies really want people to buy their systems they need actual new games that are only available on those systems. Otherwise what’s even the point of having these consoles if I can just keep playing on that same Xbox one I got in like 2017?

Positive Brand Identity is SO huge, that's why I love Valve and using Steam they really haven't failed me yet and any time there's news about them it's always positive. It creates brand loyalty, sometimes for better or worse as far as internet discussions go but it creates it nonetheless. Sony as well, especially during the PS4 era, was coming out with banger after banger and when they did that "game sharing" commercial it was this awesome hilarious pro-consumer move and it made me happy with my purchase. Granted these days I genuinely regret getting a PS5 everything coming out on it is coming to PC so I should have just used the money and bought some more RAM or a better CPU or something. Also the exclusives PS5 has are like 2 at this point? FF16 was pretty cool I guess but not worth that $600. They got lucky my PS4 broke, I should have just replaced it with a used PS4. It also seems like they have a habit of holding on to engines that are way past their prime or difficult to work with ( Starfield, Halo Infinite). As for beefier consoles, it would be nice to get atleast 60fps, 4K with ray tracing at the same time . Perhaps a base model that can be scaled up with an add on but now we’re just talking about PCs lol. Still , that was something that was talked about in the past.

I think the best play is definitely moving towards being an open platform/publisher. Given how much PC gaming has exploded in the past couple gens, I think it'd be wise for MS to lean into that advantage more. Xboxes are already running on (heavily) modified versions of Windows, so I don't think it'd be _too_ much of a stretch for them to bring more of that PC gaming experience to their consoles. Ease off the specialized hardware R&D and focus on making attractive console-esque living room PCs. Let it run Steam, let people upgrade some of the components, be supportive of more interesting peripherals and accessories, normalize the inclusion of real graphics settings so players can tune their own experience, etc. The market is more informed and tech savvy than ever, so I think we're long overdue for a console that stops babying players and actually offers some flexibility and power-user features.

They don't want the gears of war trilogy's shitty sequels, they don't want Bethesda's lies and buggy, boring games, they dont want the new Halo titles which are atrocious, they dont want Fables fabled over promised and under delivered products. They are good. They don't even care about franchises anymore. They care about good games, good world design and memorable experiences. They are the harshest critics of their own exclusives and they let the developers know it. That aside, if xbox players want PS games, they should be welcomed with open arms.

i dont think any xbox console actually made money for microsoft because they cost so much in R&D. The xbox was always a hardware honeypot for Microsoft to platform their software (games) as they are a software company first and foremost. I think the plan was to continue making xbox exclusives which made enough money for generations of xbox consoles to fund their software development. This formula changed when xbox gamepass made its way to other platforms (because it became so profitable and successful). Now Microsoft has what it always wanted, a profitable software platform which makes its way on all devices (cough cough windows OS)

My partner spent months online trying to secure me one. I finally got it. Was thrilled and (no exaggeration) within 2 weeks after hitting the one year warranty it now shuts off after playing for less than an hour. I contacted PS costumer service and they said sorry but I would have to send it to Japan and pay $250 with NO GUARANTEES that they could actually fixed it. I found xbox s for under $200. I love it! PlayStation has burned me in a way I won’t ever come back from. My ps5 is basically a brick now. Why would I spend more money to MAYBE fix my Ps5 when I could have a brand new system for less money. But I feel like I missed out too on the whole Halo franchise. Just this week due to binging the show 'Halo' on Paramount+, I went out and bought the Master Chief Collection (MCC for $10!!) + Halo 5 (on the MS store $5)...so, I need to buy an Xbox now to play these; thinking of getting the Xbox Series S. This shouldn't be a surprise, but I seriously still don't know what is exactly at the root of Xbox's problem. The obvious ones are that their exclusives have been either mid or plain terrible for years now, they have a way worse streak than PlayStation and that's undeniable. Creating an inferior version of their next-gen was also a horrible design decision that even lead to developer issues and inferior ports - that one also should've been obvious in hindsight. But there is something seriously messed up with Xbox's leadership. Whether its micromanaging projects to the point of extremity, or just that they like to throw money on the fires to "fix" problems, I don't really know. This gen leading Xbox into a Sega situation would be something I would not be too surprised to see coming in the near future.

I think they'll still be making a physical XBox for a long time yet, but it'll be seen more of a "reference" model as well has continuing to be the same hardware as used in the cloud servers. What for me that is really telling of the state of the industry is even PlayStation in it's dominant position isn't seeing growth in hardware sales and is moving more of line-up to PC. And with products like SteamDeck and the ROG Ally delivering PC gaming in a console form factor and price(ish) we're not all that far off "generic" hardware reaching a performance to price ratio that will make traditional consoles meaningless. But it may still be worth Sony and MS making their own boxes are part of their offering and profits. Remember MS are still making Surface despite it's small market share.

Not that this would ever happen, but I wish they’d make a Games Anywhere service (a la Movies Anywhere). I own all three consoles, but I’m starting to hesitate buying games at all (except on my Switch). I got on board with all digital in the 360 era, and kept with Xbox for most games because that’s where my library is, but now the fear of Xbox failing because they won’t ever be able to come close to Sony (as the PS4 era is when most people started seriously building their digital libraries) makes me want to hold out on most purchases until Xbox’s future becomes more clear. This is bad for both Sony and Xbox, as I’m not buying all that much from either of them until I feel the dust has settled, and I can see where others like me are likely in the same situation. A Games Anywhere service would alleviate that problem. Plus, even if you own all consoles, how likely are you to buy a game more than once? The third party publishers would have no problem with it, and it wouldn’t affect first party titles, anyway. Personally, I’d probably be far more likely to buy from both, since I would feel more confident that my library would continue to be usable down the line. I’d also be far more likely to maintain online subscriptions for both (I don’t currently on PS), since I know that I’d be able jump on board with friends on either network.

Sales numbers vs a competitor isn’t how a company gages success. Profitability is all that matters. The fact they’re not beating Sony in sales is irrelevant to Microsoft. The fact their gaming division is profitable is all that matters to them. Brands don’t fold because they’re not the market leader. That’s a ridiculous concept.
