What an excellent journey for just two pounds! The bus seemed airy and light, and all those facilities for a journey of just one hour and 15 minutes. Great scenery, even with seemingly overcast conditions. Thanks again for another excellent video trip.

His observations are spot on . Rawtenstall is a nice town and the Asda has caused disastrous traffic problems . He passed an interesting place as he was leaving the town . The last temperance bar in Britain.

Not necessarily a rival for quality but much more a similar level, Transdev also run relatively high-spec buses on their Coastliner routes east from Leeds/York (albeit these journeys are a lot longer!) If you're up for an adventure, you can do the entire way from Leeds to Whitby (which is just under 3 and a half hours, a rather long run!) Another high-spec are some of the First Essex buses on the X30 airlink service from Stansted to Southend/ First Eastern Counties Excel routes A/B/C/D (Peterborough to Norwich), albeit neither of those quite come close to these in terms of spec, they do have relatively good specs.

Nice one mate. I’m doing the Leeds coast liner one in a couple of weeks. Just debating whether to go to Scarborough or Whitby tbh. Agree, it’s a long trip but for £2 should be amazing value for money! Cheers.

Mark, i think I'm going to have to start my own channel and show some of the best routes down my way - my local, for example, the Arriva 12 service from Maidstone to Tenterden. Stunning views over the Weald of Kent from the top deck, and only a shade over an hour after leaving Maidstone, you arrive in the Georgian masterpiece of Tenterden - the jewel of the Weald. There's loads of rides - all two quid too - all over Kent. The other is the Stagecoach X3 from Canterbury to Maidstone - 50+ stops and a winding route through some of the best late medieval/early Tudor villages and towns in the county. Stay tuned....😅

The drivers' uniforms are so smart too. Amazing the roof windows. Same company Transdev as the Leeds - Whitby. Great to see a typical normal bus journey for a change.

At 8.05 you can see the hill at Edenfield with the wind turbines on top. That takes me back to my paragliding days. It's a lovely hill to fly. Just watched and now subbed after the leeds to whitby video and you mentioned this one so here i am. Great vids :)

Great film. Did this route in 2019 as far as Rawtenstall to a stop or two beyond the bus station. As has been said elsewhere it is hilly, but wonderful views with the hills as a backdrop to the houses. Having seen this I'll have to take the bus all the way to Burnley. Got my eye on some trips to and through Hebden Bridge in the future. Some excellent scenery there.

I am so pleased you took mine and others at their word that this service was well worth travelling on, I am so relaxed at the end of a 75 min run. The £2 fare really helps though their day tickets in normal times are a great price and I think if you buy the highest priced one you can travel all the way to Whitby via Leeds which I plan to do. Well done for naming the lady on the announcements I just assumed it was someone who worked for the company. 😅. You really appreciate how good the bus is when you travel on the X41 Manchester to Accrington on the Blackburn Bus company subsidiary of Transdev which is a much more inferior single decker. Lots of loverly routes to carryon across the Pennies from Burnley as well.

Cheers Paul. Yep, an amazing bus wasn’t it - certainly the best I’ve been on (until this weekend maybe 🤔). I’ve never been to Rawtenstall before and they do have the East Lancs Railway. Mind you, the issues they’re having atm, might not be a great time to visit!

Great trip report, seen this bus many times whilst in my local city Manchester will have to try it. If you come up here again there is the Manchester museum of transport bus museum located in cheetham hill near strangeways, it’s open at weekends and is a really good collection of different Manchester buses throughout the years. Cheers !

This is a service local to me and it's quite a treat, especially as it's free to me as an OAP. Very quick but best to get on in Manchester before 3pm as after that it's stop-start all the way to the M60 in the heavy traffic. Personally I hate the announcements, but I'm glad you like the new Rawtenstall bus station. It was argued over for years because some thought it was too big, too expensive, and out of character for the town - as if the temporary glass and iron shelters erected in the 1970s were!

The bus station is something to be proud of. The first time I saw it I was stunned by the architecture, and the layout which shouted out "small town doing things better than big cities". The electronic information boards, the seating, the kiosk; all ideal. I call it Trumpton.

Nice vid... I would suggest you try the Scottish City-Link bus 914 between Glasgow and Fort William. The view are spectacular, and although it's a bus, it's basically a coach. Stunning!

I use it once a week, just for the trip. Impeccable, and really interesting journey. I find that downstairs there is more leg room on the drivers side than the nearside. I am 6 foot 2, so it matters. I wandered around Rawtenstall last time, and it's nicer and bigger than the impression you get from the bus.

@@LetsMakeaTrip must try the 50 as its open top in summer and I believe it's the only route has a service bus on a service ferry as it uses the Sandbanks Ferry between Swanage & Bournemouth

Judging by a lot of British local travel videos, i one two South African born of my English grandfather's 13 grandchildren heard him complain about far too many sunny days when he visited us in 1963. Great video, thanks.

Poss alternative (takes longer?) Is NatEx Manchester-Colne via Bolton, Blackburn, Accrington. Burnley (was one or two journeys a day, but the old Ribble links show with NatEx also through selling up to 5 seats on X43 Journeys at least to Burnley

On the lower deck, that particular seat (the forward facing seat over the rear wheel) does have limited knee room from the seats in front, but if you choose one of the lower seats further forward, leg room is much better.

Like the references to ‘The Smiths’ songs, very subtle 👍

Great video as always wow that’s an amazing price of 2 pound for a bus journey to Burnley from Manchester great timings too for the week every 20 minutes that’s a very nice and modern double decker that bus is nearly the same as the grey platnium buses that national express West Midlands use just without the windows in the ceiling I would possibly use that service if I lived in Manchester and I had to get to Burnley at least the Wi-Fi worked and usb sockets worked as well very good for a 2 pound bus journey great background music used for the motorway and road shots so professionally edited hope your having a good evening 👍

Excellent video as always Mark! Once you leave the Motorway, that looks like a lovely journey. I've personally only ever driven into Telford, Shrewsbury and Wolverhampton Stations but 2 bays with the same number seems odd. As you'll know yourself, Arriva in Shropshire are some way behind with their bus quality!

Cheers Andrew. Yes was on the local Arriva service yesterday just going into town and there’s definitely a difference in standard. Not great round Shropshire generally I don’t think. Put it this way, there’s not much that inspires me trip-wise in the local area sadly.

Back in the 60s and early 70s there was a similar journey by SELNEC (South East Lancashire and Nortth East Cheshire) From Manchester to Bolton stopping at the bigger towns. I used to get on In Oldham (home town) and go to Manchester and stay on the bus to get to Bolton and get off again at Oldham. A great way to pass 3 hours. I would do the same if I could get on the X43. Looks a great way to travel in luxury. The Selnec coaches were total luxury then. A strange pastime for an 11 yesr old lad.

Wow, that looked like a really comfy bus. A few days ago I did the Exmoor Coaster bus that runs between Minehead and Lynmouth. It is about an hour long and the views are phenomenal. There is a Timelapse video of the journey on KZread, to get a flavour of the journey.

The only drawbacks would be that half of the top deck is open top, so bad weather could spoil your enjoyment a little. However, in really nice weather, the open-top experience is the best. Countisbury Hill near Lynmouth has a pretty nerve-wracking stretch of road for about 5 minutes, as your pretty close to a cliff edge. Other travel-related things that might interest you in the area would be the Lynmouth Cliff Railway - the only water powered railway in the UK - and the heritage railway between Minehead and Bishop’s Lydeard (near Taunton) - the longest in England.

Nice documenting. The bus is excellent quality, wooden floors even, only complain I would have is leaving early. If it's a service people can just get on, then I dislike early running. If it's pre-booked only, if everyone turns up early, then by all means leave early.

Wow, that is some of the finest by Transdev. They also invested into these for the now gone CityZap bus which used to link York and Leeds. An epic review of this and thanks for sharing. Got a suggestion if that is okay? Transdev Coastliner 840 Leeds to Whitby via Yorkshire Moors. This was named the UK'S most scenic bus route.

Another route that I would suggest is the 840 Coastliner, which connects Leeds all the way up to Whitby. Simply an amazing route and lovely scenery. Alternatively there is also the 843 Leeds-Scarborough or the B3 Brontë Bus. Anyway, now I'll have to retry the X43 someday with these new buses

Fully agree with that trip, which takes in York too en-route. The Leeds to Whitby option is best!

Great video cant go wrong for two pounds and they've extended this too fares were due to rise again this month i believe but its been extended to June which is brilliant I live in Manchester myself so I'm definitely going to give this a go soon thanks!

A couple of recommendations for this now Simon. I’ve made a note 😊👍

Some bus stations have multiple spaces, it guess it depends on frequency of services, I know Middleton Bus Station in Greater Manchester has 2 spaces for the 17/18 services towards Rochdale and Langley and also the 59 towards Oldham

I have ridden on these a lot when they use to run on the now gone 'CityZap' service. Really solid buses on what was a really decent route (particularly when they ran a £1 promotion). Transdev on the whole are one of the better bus operators. If you enjoyed this there '36' service from Leeds to Ripon or 'Coastliner' service from Leeds to Whitby are probably worth a trip too (all have windows in the roof as well)!

Rawtenstall's new bus station is certainly a massive step up from the derelict 1950s shed it replaced!

Transdev pioneered this level of luxury on the 36 from Leeds-Ripon via Harrogate, which is well worth a ride. The Whizz to Skipton is about to be replaced by the slower (running via Nelson instead of the by pass) M6.

@@LetsMakeaTrip the beach at Blyth is great. Ashington is a pit jacker town BEWARE. It is a local town for local people. I've lived in NE for over 35 years. Sunderland and Newcastle are fine but any further then it gets tribal. I walked into a spoons pub at Ashington bus station and it was obvious two factions but I was in No Mans Land. I had a pint and left. Nasty experience. Go to Blyth nice beach and spoons pub. The Wallah. M

they also use gemni2 and then they got a revamp in 2020 also when the route got cut back the branding as very diffret it had a drawing of a witch on the the side and was brown the and black E400MMC came around in 2019.

Those buses are quite impressive! I do like the sun roof, but thinking forward to the '3' blisteringly hot days a year we have, unless it has aircon... how hot is it going to be on that bus ? Great video as always ! Doing this one myself soon. For views the 555 between Lancaster and Keswick (but mainly the Keswick to Kendal part) has amazing scenery. But the bus isn't in comparison to this one

Cheers Myles, yep will be interesting to hear from anyone who does this regularly whether it’s super-hot upstairs in the summer. Maybe everyone migrates downstairs if so! Like you said, it’s probably not worth it for the 1 day a year we get the sun! 😂

Ive done the Pendle Wizz a few times and its a really nice route but unfortunately it is getting cut in a few weeks and partially replaced by a new M6 bus. As for other similar buses, transdev's X98/X99 over in Leeds use the exact same buses just in different colours.

There is a route 59 which runs every 2 hours on Saturdays only with Transdev Harrogate which runs between Harrogate, Bolton Abbey and Skipton. The route is really scenic.

If there's routes to try, why not try the Transpeak between Buxton and Derby (or other way round), or if you're in the Nottingham area, give Sherwood Arrow a go (I recommend the Nottingham to Retford section though)

Another great route for ride quality the first coast link service services x1/x11 between lowestoft great Yarmouth and Norwich you get coach style seating and all,the other mod cons usb charging WiFi and contact less payments but this seems to becoming the norm

I do think it’s more common Shane I Agree. I was over in Dublin a couple of days back though and the bus driver didn’t take card payments. I couldn’t believe it, being so used to not using cash now!

Lidl bought the site of the old Rawtenstall Bus Station and Bus Depot, I worked for Rossendale Transport just before they got took over by Transdav, even then the rumor mill was rife with talk of the new bus station as a deal Lidl made to have one of their stores in Rawtenstall.

Lidl are always doing deals like that - happened in Shrewsbury by the football ground. Money talks doesn’t it!

Great work ,very informative . Incredible value . I wonder how long it can last -- not that I would wish a recession for the sake of unbelievable bus fares . Am I correct in thinking that this coincides with another increase in UK rail fares ?

Cheers! Rail fares are going up (again) so I don’t think this will hurt in terms of passenger numbers. What happens after June? Who knows 👍

Hi both, thanks for the comment. I must be honest, my steam/heritage railway stuff does TERRIBLY when it comes to views - no one seems interested (relatively speaking - see my Isle of Man stuff). I do want to get down to that part of the world though, been meaning to for ages. Personally, I really enjoy the steam rides 😊👍

700 Coastliner Portsmouth to Brighton via Chichester

Good video. We always see the Witchway in Manchester and say we'll go on that bus one day! It's the smartest looking bus around. Is the bus station adjacent to the shops etc or is it just a bus station? Is there a cafe inside?

The one in Manchester is just on the side of the road. Burnley bus station isn’t far from the centre at all 👍

This bus is very luxurious and its amazing to travel for £2 on this.

Looks cool but would coaches not be a better option for a route like this. The Dublin to Drogheda route 101 in Ireland is a similar length to this and has recently been upgraded from Wright bodied double deck buses to VDL Futura double decker coaches which is a significant upgrade for passenger comfort.
