Harwich to Hook of Holland. The Overnight Ferry with Stena Line, MV Stena Hollandica

I think this is a real bargain! When I looked at booking this trip as a foot passenger, it necessitated getting all the way to Harwich which, by train, can mean going into London then back out again. Step forward the 'Dutch Flyer' Stena's Rail and Sail offering in-conjunction with Greater Anglia trains which allows you to buy a combined ticket from any Greater Anglia network station, plus the ferry all the way over to The Netherlands.
So I began my journey from Cromer where I'd been spending the day and it meant I didn't have to go in and out of London. In this video, I'll tell you how to buy and use the ticket, how much it costs and, of course, I'll show you around the ship and we'll have a look at what's on offer, have dinner and take a look at the cabin I got as well.
I'd love to hear your experiences if you've sailed with Stena on this route either on the Dutch Flyer combined ticket or not. Thanks as always guys for watching the video, it really is appreciated and goes a long way in helping me to make more content like this in the future.
Cheers for now.

What I like about your videos is they show possible travel ideas that are for anyone. You don’t have to be able to drive, or be part of a couple - and even if you aren’t a seasoned traveller, there’s always enough information to encourage anyone to give it a go if they fancy it!

David I really appreciate the comment. This is why I want to do this because anyone should be able to feel confident enough to organise and go on a trip, somewhere. And it doesn’t matter whether it’s a long haul flight in biz or a bus trip along the coast, it’s all travel and should be enjoyable to someone. Thanks mate 😊👍

Mate the fact I've just stepped off a pretty agonising ferry crossing and am now watching a 30 minute ferry video on KZread is testament to the quality of your work. You are the Captain of these Mark! Really impressed with Stena and their soft drinks which must be lined with gold. Impressed with the chart/camera view on the cabin TV, and sorry to have to say it, but nice to see a ship without kids running about absolutely wild all night! Cheers Cap'n. Already planning my holiday in Mistley.

Haha, no you are mate! Honestly 👍 That Coke was unbelievable, well I dunno, someone will accuse me of moaning if I go on about it too much 😂 Overall, I liked the ship, I liked the deck space BUT in the scheme of things, it didn’t have the character or charm of some of the classics I’ve been on (like MV Bretagne for example). Mistley well, I think even your good self would struggle to make a video about that place! PS, I haven’t gotten around to booking the Smyril ferry yet but I will do! Cheers, Steve

I did this for 2.5 years (2017-2019)every 3 weeks, but from the Netherlands working for Banks and Brexit. Also used the waiting area in the Harwich terminal to get work done. Much better than flying. On overnight crossings get yourself lounge access. It is free if you collect enough points. Might be cheaper than buying several 4 pounds drinks. Had several interesting conversations there with interesting people. Booking a dinner in the posh restaurant used to be a good deal at €32. Not sure if it still is with the current price and what I read from recent reviews. I think I know the friendly guy at the station. Met him several times. I have a very detailed review on this crossing if you are interested.

I always went "rail and sail" to Hoek van Holland, the only civilised way to travel to the Netherlands. Board , shower, have a drink, have dinner in the Metro Restaurant followed by another beer , sleep , wake up to the most annoying song ever , shower, breakfast, disembark and jump on a train to Amsterdam via Rotterdam or Schiedam Centraal. Worth every penny.

Good days. Cheers 😊👍

Living up North I have not used this route since 1994 AND 1996 when the older ferries ran, on route to family holidays in The Black Forest. I remember the food not being great then and I think we had bought our own sandwiches probably M&S. We stayed in a loverly family run B&B in Wrabnes, before taking the day ferry. which you would have passed through on the train close to Harwich. Great review of the Ferry which looked very nice and the first time I have seen a tv in a basic cabin. Such a shame the ferries to Denmark and Germany no longer operate from here as they would be very useful.

Also, if you join their loyalty scheme the points actually add up quite quickly and you soon get free lounge access whereupon drinks and light snacks are free.

Same with breakfast. I always made sure I had eaten before I went on board. On the night ferry, couple of beers and get your head down. On the Dutch side there is a great little fish shop that serves excellent fish and chips. Early lunch there on the way back and a sandwich in the bag all you need. The pub on the roundabout in Harwich does a decent meal, always tried to get dinner there before boarding for the night crossing. Perfect way to get from A to B but don't expect to party.

When I got to Harwich I would have my evening meal there and they let me stay overnight in the car park. I travelled from Sweden. The beat route was the Göteborg to Kiel ferry and the Hook to Harwich. The Gbg to kiel ferry is great. Far better than the slog down to Helsingborg and then putgarten. Altogether the spaghetti on the putgarten ferry is good. Very rarely used the bridge. Cpg to Helsingborg time wise is about the same but it is shorter and you get time for a coffee on the ferry. A couple of ideas for you. If you study the map carefully there is a ferry crossing the river well east of hamburg avoiding getting through hamburg. Very nice drive and a very interesting ferry ride It is slow compared to the autobahn but a nice drive.

I have used this route every month this summer! I used to cross on Eurostar but post-BREXIT extra border controls make it a slower journey so I either have to get an expensive early train (from North Yorks) or stay overnight in Paris on my way to the Basque Country on the Spanish border in far SW France. Instead I now get a cheap afternoon ticket to Kings X, go 4 stops on the Metropolitain Line to Liverpool Street and catch the 18:45 to Harwich International. This arrives at 20:23 and boarding seems to be synchronised with the arrival of this train - I have never waited more than about 10 minutes. Yes, facilities on board are limited and catering basic, compared to Brittany Ferries, but this is not a "cruise ferry" - just look at the size of the Lorry Drivers' lounge to see the target market. But you are asleep most of the time and from arrival in the morning it is an easy metro ride to Rotterdam Centraal for the 09:58 Thalys to Paris then a transfer to Montparnasse for the TGV to Hendaye arriving late afternoon. Ideal timings and cheaper than Eurostar, though I still do the reverse trip via St Pancras in view of the extra hour gained.

In about 1972 I went on a ferry from Immingham to Amsterdam just before Christmas. (The ferry went on to Sweden from there.) If you didn't have a cabin, there were dormitories with one prickly prison blanket for each bed. No sheets or pillow cases. Coming back, the North sea was very rough. You could not have included that journey in a video, albeit this was long before KZread. Everywhere you could hear people throwing up. As the ship lurched about, the corridors ran with vomit. I went in the gents' toilets and found all the basins full of you know what. A woman was trying to unblock one with a fork. She said the women's toilets were worse. I wasn't sea sick, but it was the worst trip I have ever been on.

This video I have waited for. From experience I have seen foot passengers use the premium lounge you can pay for the upgrade on the Stena website or service desk, but personally if you have a cabin and maybe pay a little more for a window cabin then you don't need the lounge, on day sailings the cabins prices are reasonably cheap some with a free mini-bar. I have never seen the casino open and I agree the drinks are expensive, the coffee is disgusting my only negatives and the hike from the ship to passport control in Hoek terminal! The crossing is an experience standing on deck 11 looking out towards the North Sea ship spotting ha ha. I really enjoyed this video if you do it in reverse Hoek to Harwich go for a pint in the Harwich pub in Hoek. (That is a tongue twister) I was interested to see the military guys in uniform, wonder where they where going.... Just to note I read Stena swap the ships schedule around in December....so I look forward to seeing you on Britannica next... 👍😃 but bring your bring drinks ha ha

I remember that Great Western and Stena did a rail & sail (maybe they still do) to Ireland. But that was zoned in fares. The first experience i had with split ticketing was to book r&s from Llanelli and the very cheap ticket from Swansea to Llanelli saved £20 ish to not cross the zone.

Having done this trip many years ago and thinking about it for the future videos on the routes always interest me. There have been quite a few recently but arguably you get the feeling of the experience somewhat better than the others. It is, by the time you have eaten, a fairly short night and many of the facilities seem closed on the night crossing. It would be interesting to compare a day voyage. I did check cabin availability in the summer a while back and the outer cabins in particular seemed heavily booked across quite a few dates. It is reasonably priced, you do save on a hotel but with the number of flights from UK regional airports to the Netherlands perhaps the value to foot passengers is rather less unless you live near the port?

Harwich iirc has a Premierinn by the port so it could make as much sense to overnight there and get the day crossing. I may well try it. I believe the facilities do open up once in international waters but I don’t know about everyone else, I was in bed by that point. Overall though, a decent ship and crossing I would certainly recommend (bring your own coke though 😂). Cheers 😊👍

Great video but there's some context you may not be aware of. The two identical ferries on this route are primarily targeted for freight / lorry drivers - they contribute the majority of the income and passengers. Their area is on the opposite side, which explains your comment about only car / foot passenger having access to one side primarily. The lounge is for the premier car customers because the premium they are paying is very significant - typically £50 + to get several benefits . For a foot passenger, the equivalent cost would be multiple of the fare they have already paid which would make it less attractive. The taster lounge is excellent (I use it every time) and well worth the money. Finally at time of construction, the Stena Hollandica and Britannica were the largest combo Lorry and Car ferries in the world.

I only left one person, and he accidentally breathed in some wacky backy and got shit faced. The trouble was he was mild special needs. Oops. Not sure tbh. Might be worth checking the Stena Line ferry or sending them a message on X 👍

Cromer? I would have stocked up on Cromer crab and sat on the deck at sunset haha

That sounds lovely! Though getting them through security - there's probably some clause in there somewhere (see what I did there? claws?). I won't give up the day job!

Midland London did this exactly 1 week ago. He was on the other ship I think but I wonder who recorded their trip first?

If I arrive on the train with a bike, are there separate arrangements for boarding?

Check on the Stena website for bicycle carriage. If it's not detailed on there, I would contact them directly.

Seemed value for money. Did you get breakfast? If so how much was breakfast and how did it taste?

Hi Gareth! The fare was pretty decent yes. I didn’t get breakfast but I posted up the price in the video which I seem to remember was €14.

I think the casino /fruitmachine areas open after you leave port

What about since Brexit? Does it require extra visas or other checks besides a passport?

I imagine that the casino, if it opens, may not do so until the ship is outside territorial waters.

Ah yes John, thanks. I wonder if it’s more of a day thing too? I’d be interested to know if it bothers to open on the overnight crossing as I can’t see many staying up all night, especially when cabins are compulsory.

Could well be. Interested to see if any day passengers can help.

I also noticed that they didn’t provide tea and coffee making facilities in your cabin-unlike most inland Hotel Rooms-perhaps that’s because they want you to buy your tea and coffee,at the various onboard cafes and bars,at their inflated prices ??

Probably Tony, though I think the dearer cabins do have tea and coffee making facilities 👍
