The X100VI in The Gambia, I Love, I Need, I Want, I...

With weeks to go until Fujifilm officially revealed their latest in the X100 dynasty, I flew to The Gambia for the West African Photowalk Retreat with my faithful Fujifilm X100V, the two focal length converter accessories and... the new Fujifilm X100VI. The Six.
This isn't a deep tech review in any sense, for that go check out my buddy Mullins' film that he's made here: • Fujifilm X100VI Review
No, this is more a chance to take the camera to a different kind of location and just enjoy shooting, with a few thoughts as food, as it were, the sort of place where light, dust and sea spray make for a unique geographic stamp.
The sixth-generation release in the series, the X100VI, features a 40MP X-Trans CMOS 5 HR sensor, X-Processor 5, a new (to X100) film simulation; REALA ACE, AI subject detection, the latest AF algorithm and 6-stops IBIS. It's equipped as before with an advanced hybrid viewfinder and in-built ND filter.
Bringing the sensor in line with the flagship X-T5, the addition of IBIS and upgraded AF, what's not to like? Surely, this is, as they say, a 'no brainer' of a purchase decision for anyone who owns an X100 or, to those not yet invested in the type, a golden handshake of introduction.
The rumour mill has certainly elevated the hype around this much-awaited camera; the perfect travel companion, perhaps not as pocketable as an X-E4, but not far off, particularly if your jacket pockets are of reasonable dimension.
Of course, thanks to social media excitement, the X100V became legendary, as rare as a hen's teeth, and those who did part with theirs found the camera had an investment opportunity akin to bricks and mortar, so I hope that distribution plans will be robust for the VI.
So anyway, I took this preprod model to West Africa, to The Gambia as I wanted to test it as a main documentary workhorse within a small camera bag of accessories including a Røde Videomicro for filming, the two focal length converters that screw to the existing 23mm lens to give equivalent focal lengths of 28 and 50mm, and an X100V.
I went with a question; do I really need to upgrade? I mean the X100V has been a faithful travelling companion for as long as I can remember. I've used it on photowalks to make my sketchbook pictures, I've taken it abroad as my vacation buddy and I've used it on professional shoots too. I've been happy enough with the quality, the resolution and ease of use. Could anyone really make it any better?
I suppose it's a touch like having a two-door hatchback that's decent enough, but then one day finding the local mechanic has whipped out the engine and popped something substantial in its place that magically doesn't make the car much heavier. Well, sort of.
This is not a super technical review. My reviews, those that I've done, never seem to be. I just thought you, like me, might be interested to see some pictures from this camera, from a place that would test the kit more than a rainy day in Swindon town centre (no offence meant).
The Gambia is hot, it's dusty and when you're out in the bush, there aren't a lot of recharge points. So how does this camera operate under those conditions? Has it retained the fun status that's difficult to explain to a Fuggle - the Fujifilm equivalent to a Potteresque Muggle, who just doesn't get the magic.
All the content in this reviewette, bar one, either filmed or stills, comes from the X100VI.
My thanks to MPB for their partnership on the podcast. I used MPB for my purchase of the X100V actually, something I've been very happy to sport as an EDC since the day it landed in my hands. For quality used photo and video gear, go to www.mpb.com

Was important that the whole thing was from the camera. I felt that transitioned it from normal review, where the camera in question is usually being filmed by something entirely different, and sometimes a different brand! I'm working out what to sell to buy it. Keep movin' kids! ;-)

I have at the moment got a x100t (that I love) that compared with my XH2 is now a bit long in the tooth. This year I’m going to a desert environment I was concerned that had the potential to damage the XH2. I know some will say just be careful, but having been in sandstorms I know sand gets everywhere. I will add the 23mm is my go to vocal length. What I saw from your video is this camera can do everything I want it to do. Again thank you.

I sorted that with a blast of air regularly.

Lovely pic's and experience. This has listed now in Australia with a release price of just on $3,000 - which is totally ridiculous. The last one of these I bought was back in 2013 and was the X-100s, and that was $1,200. I'm certainly not tempted to get this new one. Since swapping over to Nikon Z, the images from the FF sensor are just head and shoulders above anything on the APSC Fuji. My z6ii is not an oversize beast and with the smaller plastic Z40mm F2 lens, it serves as my carry around go anywhere camera. I'm not knocking this new camera - people will love it. For me, in this part of the world now where things are so expensive (the Nikon Z8, is 6K here), we kind of have to use what we have and make it work. If folks have money to burn, this will probably appeal to many. I just can't see the value for 3,000 dollars. I'd rather buy a used X-T3 and a nice Fuji-cron lens (the small F2 ones), for a lot less and they'll do the same thing.

Good to see (and hear the dulcet tones) of Mr James. Regards the 2nd card slot, built-in memory could perhaps allow this welcome addition. If you don't require a second SD card mechanism and instead have some chip memory it might be possible. Overheating in this environment is expected if you use IBIS for filming (where it's required and the system has to continually adjust). For photography you can set IBIS to shooting only (rather than continuous for filming) which will bring down temperatures.

Great work, nice photography. I think you may have had a duff X100 way back, I have two of them they work fine. They slow you down a little but they have a much more organic film feel than later on models. Slowing down to compose photography is something that creates real magic sometimes I think? This is a great film, and very humble. I never bought the V but I have all the other models too F. I felt like the VI(6) might be short lived by a newer model that I think might come out in August or later by FujiFilm, maybe one that has faster card reading slots like the Sony range and a menu that lets you hand pick only the Fujifilm simulations we want to use rather than scroll through 20 of them. You made a huge important point about the correct focal point for portrait 85mm, I'm pretty certain the new blood of photography enthusiasts have no idea that 23/35mm is not for portrait even if people do get it close sometimes. I love the Leica point you made also, this is what Fujifilm probably want to hear a lot, the reality of expensive gear that works the same or if not worse than the modest inexpensive gear that is for trend setters. I can't imagine Fujifilm will ever add two slots to this type of camera, they will probably save that for more commercially responsible geared equipment, I think Fujifilm have a 10+ Year plan rather than a 3 Year plan like other manufacturers. Great to see such a warming nice review out , and it's clearly appreciated by many reading the comment. Just not sure if MBP helps or hinders your work though, that might put a lot of people off your work even if there is come financial or facility gain. Note the positive Trust Pilot reviews for MPB are not all legit.

Thanks for your well thought out points about the camera, appreciate it. I was beginning to think I was a lone voice on the 85mm front. I do think you're right about the twin slots, though I'll remain a lone voice with the desire for it perhaps. MPB have been such an important supporter of the podcast, without them, we may not have had the ability to continue. I'm really not convinced that it'll put folk off, particularly when it's such a small part of the film. I'm impressed by wonderful folk who work there in the warehouses... many/most of them photographers in their own right with a real passion for picture making. I'm a long long long way from Adsense being able to support the work that goes in. Now as for the duff X100 all those years back... hmmm, maybe. Maybe. I'm pleased I bought it though!

Hi Keith, I wince a little with the phrase 'call out' because it suggests they/people are doing something purposefully to deflect or deceive, and I just don't believe Fujifilm do this. There aren't many companies for instance who have the sort of facility as we do in the UK in the House of Photography - where you get a chance to talk to experts about the system, go to special events, training and so on. I think they find themselves in a damned if they do and don't situation with the X100VI... partly because if they wait for much longer, they'll have enthusiastic users complaining that they want to the new body and so on. They were very much caught in a storm following the influencers who partly created a rush on the system, and of course world issues on going with supply chains of particular parts. A 'victim' of their own success? Perhaps. In terms of KZreadrs and influencers getting cameras - clearly they do at the start of the process, to create a buzz and so on - good commercial sense. But after that, many of us, I'd say pretty much all of us who are lucky to try the cameras, hand them back and join the same queue as you would. I know I have. I have a feeling that the supplies will improve this time, world issues of course not withstanding.

Just preordered! I wanted the X100V but wasn’t willing to pay a premium for a used camera. I am paying less for a new camera than the used X100V. The big feature I’m happy about is the IBIS. Dual slots isn’t a feature I would use. Having the class II card slot is more important to me. I’d also would have liked if Fuji used the 235 battery. I realize the body and weight would have increased. So be it. How about a full sized 3.5mm audio jac? Maybe we’ll see this on the VII. Do I need a new camera? Do I need the X100VI? No. I purchased a XH1 a couple weeks ago. A five year old camera. I’m sure I haven’t outgrown the capabilities of that camera. This will be the last new camera I will buy. We discovered, we met, we shared food, we did so much more as visitors with inquisitive eyes. We're also (some of the team) now working on a crowdfunder to raise money for the school who had had their water pump stolen. And were, I guess, guests and tourists, which has a currency and value to those we spend time with, as well as ourselves. An exchange if your will. I suppose a very valid example would be to ask, as a reframed question or observation; "I wonder what might happen if a group of people from another country or culture arrived on our shores and started taking pictures of our children, what might we say?" You could reframe your question quite rightly that way, and one might shift uncomfortably in their seat. Making pictures with and of and for people is a dance, particularly with children. I think that in itself became a partnership, as we spent time enjoying each others' company. It's important to note that when, and this happened with my filming in a good few places, when I was making a clip or doing a piece to camera, I would be joined by children who were as inquisitive about me, as me about them. Respect comes to mind I think alongside inquisitiveness. I wasn't there shooting telethon footage looking for a story that needed to lever emotion. I was there making pictures of people, in happy scenarios, often noisy scenarios and always, unless it really wasn't possible, made sure I took the time to talk with whoever I made the picture of, and when I remembered, to turn the camera around, and share the experience. Sorry for the long winded answer, but I do think it's important to consider both sides of the story; not simply what is somewhat assumed.

im going to pass. the x100v is perfect. v keeps the file sizes reasonable. i havnt seen much of a noticable difference in iq, unless youve seen much better dynamic range? The vi will certainly overheat at times and have worse battery life. the battery life on the v is already bad. also, made in japan and i just love that about the v

WHY are people obsessed with dual slots and add-on lenses? Just buy an X-T5, for goodness sake.

I wouldn't say obsessed. And I do love to use the X100 as my EDC. So the ability just to pop on a different converter, wonderful. Dual slots, again not obsessed, just something that I'd like in this camera. Now, if you want obsession. I can point you toward various chocolate brands and camera brands. Now THAT is obsessed. Good to hear from you.

Dude those little jittery, digital sounding words that keep popping up on the lower part of the screen are so distracting, and the sound is non-organic and slightly like a robotic insect or something, that I've been having a really hard time concentrating on what you're saying, nevermind what im actually supposed to be looking at. Hard to follow your "story" with all of these other things happening simultaneously. Just saying

Been a long time listener and viewer for years but man I just have to say this; your background music was constantly competing against your spoken word. Not only was it too loud it was shockingly annoying. Not trying to be an ass, sorry. I just couldn't even get through the first couple of minutes.

Thanks for your comment. Good thoughts. In terms of balance. It was absolutely fine on the scope as a mix, so I'm guessing this is perception, in terms of how different people hear/perceive different things/balance. For instance I go into a pub and I find it hard to concentrate on what is being said to me by the person in front of me, when conversation gets to a certain level. Other people would find that 'strange' and not share the same experience at all. Listening back, the start was a little close, and I'd remix probably... but... KZread don't allow me to replace a video sadly. I do wish the same policy existed as per Vimeo.
