Seth, Bill and Jon, I think I speak for a majority of viewers and listeners but these videos can never go too long. I can listen for hours because you guys have such knowledge and passion. These videos always feel half as long.

"People are going to eat this sh!t up" Seth Paridon. You called that one brother, this is both exhilarating and somber at the same time. Just a few moments to remember the crews who went down with those ships - top shelf history and archaeology here.

Outstanding! When you are asked how long it took to prepare for this episode you can say,, "all our lives". The level of detail you present supports viewing many times - perhaps with independent study in between. Well done and thank you. (Bravo Zulu.)

I normally don't comment, but I loved the mix of this episode. Jon always brings a full plate and I loved the use of his overlays to see exactly where the damage was done. Bill adds insights I'd never thought of like "..judging from the bow wave, that destroyer is doing about 30 knots..." Seth adds the human aspect and brings the mix together. It's like 3 chefs making a feast.

These nighttime drops for us in Australia are awesome. Thanks Seth and Bill, Jon too, for all your hard work…..

As a person whose father was in the US Army (CBI theater - theatre?), I hope the contributions of the Australians during the war get recognized. I feel like apologizing for that jerk (Dugout Doug) whose public relations campaign masked a lot of the contributions of our allies.

Never tire of the topics and videos and I send them on to a friend who served in the navy. I a not ashamed to say that many of your videos have bought a tear to my eyes when I realize the extreme bravery that these servicemen showed. It should be taught in school but sadly overlooked and forgotten.

I agree with your comment, but the success of this podcast may help to erase some of the indifference, and fill in the knowledge gaps of the previously uneducated. Keep telling friends and neighbors.

Bill Roy was my wife’s grandfather and while I was aware of his service, I did not realize that the photos/still images from footage of the Yorktown I had seen in books over the years were from his work. I about fell over when Seth mentioned him so prominently and his children and grandchildren were thrilled to see this. I’m a longtime watcher of the channel and truly enjoy and appreciate Seth and Bill’s (and Jon’s) approach to thoroughly educating us about this part of history. Thank you for what you do!

Thanks for a compelling 2 hours of very interesting and ghostly images backed up by some great analysis and historical background. While the exact locations of the wrecks hasn't yet been reveled, I think that John's friend Tony makes a strong argument for the two 20mm gun mounts initially found did happen when that explosion took place. It would be informative if that location could be known. If so one could more closely approximate the position she was just after she was hit by the Dive Bombers. PS: Get well soon Bill and remember to hydrate when taking any pain meds, as they will certainly bind you up if you don't.

Seth, Bill & Jon, I will never get tired of shows like this, as a diver myself, I have dived on the HMCS McKenzie, that's just north of Vancouver Island, the first being a year after they sank her to see how much sea growth she had accumulated. I have dived on her a total of six times. I have emphasima now, so I can't dive any more. Rickm

At time 1:56 the circular item on the glass bridge window appears to me to be a "clear view screen" , a device fitted to bridge windows to provide clear view in rain or snow. I worked 30 years in the Canadian merchant marine and these clear view screens were common on older vessels.

I think the general consensus in the comments regarding whether we "eat this shit up" is hell, yes. Just wow. A pleasure to share this with such epic nerds as yourselves. Such a shame that the Essex class Yorktown (CV10) is the oldest preserved carrier and not the Big E.

Heartily agree. Cannot be too long. After all the Midway series forced me to get and read Shattered Sword, and that was a l-o-o-n-g time. My Dad was a Seabee- should at some point welcome a special on the Seabees. Co side ring they were conceptualized, organized, trained, and turned the Pacific into a series of ports, air bases etc in under 4 years, it’s a story needing to be told with the right quotient of nerdiness!!

I like bills inputs but it's kind of funny how on this one he kind of went "I'm just going to let these two nerd out". I mean they do the same for him when submarines get involved but still. The thing that gets me about the Yorktown class is that they were a compromise design that would fit under the pre-war Naval Treaties and still allow an extra lighter carrier (the Wasp.) The design of these ships was extraordinary since they like the Shokaku class fleet carriers seemed all to be almost unsinkable. Neither class was seen as the penultimate design of what a fleet carrier should be by their respective Navies but were arguably the most durable and battle-worthy warships you could ask for.

2.5 million views, and 700K audio listeners. People obviously like looking at you. Well deserved, you guys really do produce interesting stuff.

The Pacific war was tough!! The Japanese were formidable on sea, air, and land.

All of the work you guys have done is invaluable so that history and stories of the men who made history is not lost or "cancelled" forever. I caught the episode of Seth/Bill from Dec 8th and going through the museum in New Orleans, I have to make it down there.

I used to live from 1978 to 1983 in Collierville, TN just outside of Memphis and around 45 miles from Pittsburg Landing on the Tennessee River. I have lost count of how many times I have visited the Shiloh Battlefield in that time. It always seemed innocuous and slightly mundane to go to Shiloh Battlefield after the first visit, but every single time you entered the park the hairs on your arm would go up, everyone would go quiet, and the experience of visiting a place where tens of thousands of people had died in just two days would overtake all of us who were visiting the battlefield that day. I truly understand why visiting the wrecks of one of the largest and most important battles in Naval History is an awe-inspiring encounter. I experienced it with this episode.

Great job Seth, Bill and Jon. You never disappoint. Always make my Tuesday.

After listening to 99% of your episodes It's really amazing to me how the Japanese could even prosecute this war with so little resources available to them. I mean the loss of a single carrier alone is a devastating blow to the ijn. Where we were pumping out carriers monthly they couldn't remotely keep up that pace. Thanks again for the hard work!👍💖🇺🇲⚓️

Seth,Bill and Jon....excellent work on this one the unseen to most of us footage reminds us as the song says "The War was in Color." Do have a question for you guys about the bomb footage....it possible Seth just added to understanding what happened to Yorktown? It's not impossible that Val pressing her attack may have had the one in a million coincidence of having its bomb catch up to one to another, if both were fused the same doubt the crew would have noticed 2 going off almost simultaneously. Think she may have actually took one more bomb then thought and put into the reports. I think the gun near the brow is a 50 as if you look at the footage it looks as though two water lines are coming down out of it and forward when the footage clears a bit.

This is a great episode. I normally just listen as I go on my morning walks, but had to watch this one even though I knew it was going to be long, and still enjoyed every minute. Thank you. I really enjoy listening to the three of you. When watching, I do have a few suggestions if I may. Seth needs to move back a bit from the camera {my pet peeve of Zoom meetings is having to look up participant's nostrils) When talking face to face to a stranger, you would never stand this close. That Podcast logo in the lower left corner needs to be smaller when showing videos such as these or photos (blocks some of what you're talking about). Some of these videos have been reduced in size to accommodate your three head shots on the right side of what we are viewing. This makes the screen very small if viewing on a smart phone or small screen. Thanks again.

So moving about the Yourktown. I knew a gentleman in the late 70's who told me stories about being stationed right at the aft end of the island during that attack. It is so fantastic to see the photos that bring back that memory, Thanks to all of you.,.

The water-cooled .50. I had some personal contact with these at Knob Creek. It was back in the late '90s and Kent Lamont has two of these things set up on the far left side of the firing line. The plan was to a) have some fun and b) widen the range a bit at the expense of the treeline. Two guns with 15k round of ammo. The naval .50 had a cyclic rate of around 1000rpm or a bit less and they burned through all that ammo under a half hour. The pile of expended brass was over a foot tall around the bases of the guns. Very cool stuff.

tbh, for me the most engrossing segment was the YORKTOWN National Archives footage; I'd never seen that before. The antiaircraft fire and the Val making its dive attack were spellbinding. Pretty amazing how intense the AA already was in mid-1942, and of course we know it became exponentially more dense and lethal in the months and years which followed. Just based on a quick look at the TF 17 OOB, it would seem the two cruisers probably are ASTORIA (New Orleans class) and PORTLAND (Portland class, very similar to the Pensacolas). ASTORIA was sunk a couple months later at Savo Island. PORTLAND soldiered on throughout the war, eventually scrapped in the 1960s. I was also struck by the hangar interior shots showing how truly open the hangar construction was (even more so than in Nimitz-class carriers today, I might add). One of those things that one thinks they "know", from reading so many mentions over years, but then a visual image just really brings it home in a way not seen before. A sort of "a-ha!" moment.

I have read everything I cab get my hands on about the war in the Pacific, Captain, I have survived 8 of those rotator cuff repairs with the last one having a cadaver tendon installed. It is lasting the longest of any of the repairs. I could feel your pain as you were working through this session. Hope your PT goes well and you are back 100% soon.

I will say that after my 1942 tome is done, I, too, am itching to put out an updated version, because I feel like there's another 20 years of scholarship (a lot of which has been generated by Tony and me in various Naval History and Naval War College Review articles) that needs to be consolidated in one place. So, no promises, but that's something I want to do.

Coming back to this one chaps, could they have removed the akagi gunshields as part of weight savings in connection with installing further light AA post the intial carrier battles. Assuming this was actually increased.
