I'm so glad I found you. I am making my first quilt for my grandson and was trying to figure out how to make a stick when I found you. You also introduced me to a way to make moss (a drizzle stitch pulled loose) and now you are helping me to make sunflower earrings for my daughter. I grew up embroidering, quit when my kids were young, and took it back up again to discover all of these amazing new stitches! Thank you for such wonderful tutorials. 💖

Those are really neat❤️ A few years ago, I was playing around with embroidery floss thread, needle and felt..was sewing and I thought “hmm I if I take my threaded needle I could go under stitches and it wouldn’t poke threw my fabric..” I had no idea this was an actually use in sewing etc..

I find that especially when I use 8 weight it’s very important to tighten up the stitches each time. This is a real helpful video especially for most people as I’ve found that describing the idea isn’t as effective as showing the method.

Great tip about pulling it tight-tighter than I have, and love the idea of topping off those less than crisp tips with a bead! That flower is magnificent ,( beads and all )! Take care. Barb

Ariana, thank you SO much!!! I, too, have such trouble having the little loop at the top of the picot, so I think the suggestion of pulling it very tight might help me! And I totally love the suggestion of covering it up with a bead, if it bothers me. It so reminds me of my sweet Mama when she sewed dresses for me as a little girl! Everywhere you’d see a pretty button or lacey trim or Ric-rac, you’d for sure know she was covering up something she didn’t like!! Thanks for the suggestion that caused me to recall this sweet memory!!!

I love your flower!!!! This was the hardest stitch for me to do. I ripped out several mainly because of tension issues. I'm glad to know of pulling very tightly at the beginning tip. I have a question, though, Is there a recommended length of picots? Are they harder to get good results the longer they are? Thank you for an excellent video!

Patty Nelson each picot is different depending on where and what you are intending it for. So, for example, if I’m using it as a beak or ear then the length will be whatever the size of that ear or beak is. I’ve done very long picots, as I did for the tail feathers on my bird that I show at the end of the video, and also much shorter ones as I did in that crazy flower. It really depends on the project. I have not found them to be any more challenging if longer, other than the thread length needing to be much longer to ensure you don’t run out mid picot and the time it takes. Otherwise no, the weaving will be the same and that beginning of really pulling the thread so it is taut and using a smaller milliners needle to anchor will also be just the same regardless of length. ❤️

Right, so that's always the trick! I like to use the thinnest needle I can find for anchoring and then pull very very tight the thread on that first go around and push the weaves up HARD so that I don't get that loop. Sometimes I still get the loop but it's much less often.

ChellesCreations I am not sure what that means. I didn’t see the post, but have never used paper. When I do picots close together I just do them in layers and push them aside as needed.

Hello Arianne, I have just recently found your channel and I’m sew 😊 pleased I have I am learning so much. Your work is exquisite and you explain the stitches so well. I’m a right hander so sometimes it’s a challenge but well worth it and I do get there in the end. I do have a question.....I notice that in some of your demonstrations your background fabric seems to be patched with different coloured wools and it looks amazing. Is it something you do to use up scrap pieces of wool if so I would love to know how you piece the wool together ie do you machine stitch or hand appliqué a demonstration would be most appreciated if that is possible. Hi Jean, I'm so glad you found me! I piece the wool bits together by machine. Often using scraps and just sewing them up, then adding something else, but also I have layered with other fabrics, more like a collage, using cottons, velvets, dupioni silks, and more recently I've been working with a linen/cotton blend and layering that as my background. I have tons of livestreams that I have been doing more recently demonstrating how I'm using different materials and stitches as I do what I call, Improvisational Stitching. I've been working less and less with wool and more and more with other materials. ❤️

I’m slowly going through your videos....I’m fascinated by them. I have watched a couple of the streamed ones. I must admit to them not being my favourite and usually avoid them, just because of all the interruptions and one sided conversations lol but I think I’m going to have to put my reservations to one side I need to learn these new (to me) techniques. 💖😊

If you wanted a longer petal would you make the first loop longer?

Yes, exactly. The length of the petal is determined by how long you make that first loop that will be anchored by your pin or needle or whatever you use to anchor it to make your other spokes.

At the tip of the picot and starting out how do you get it not to undo itself?

Hi Pat, if you watch the video you'll see how I anchor using a pin and then wrap the linear threads around the pin. When you begin weaving in and out, it's critical to push up against that anchoring pin to ensure the weave is nice and tight. Take a look at the video again and see if what I've described makes more sense. ❤️

I've watched this video and several others. I can manage one large petal and no more. I have a project that requires four triple layer woven picot stitch flowers. I'm feeling so defeated by this stitch and it honestly doesn't LOOK like it should give me such a hard time!!

Hi Tina, practice, practice, practice. It is helpful to use a little scotch tape to cover the petals you've done so they don't get in the way of the next layer. Also make sure you are pushing each weave up toward the tip so that it's nice and tight. Too loose a weave will make it look very different. ❤️
