    Emma, thank you so much for your videos. My dad passed away in 2022 and our “thing” together was gardening. In 2023, I gave a half-hearted attempt at working in my yard, but my heart was not in it. I can’t remember why, but I started watching allotment gardening videos and came across your channel and am working my way through your older videos. It has been inspiring to see you out in all kinds of weather working on your plot. I thought, “she has to go to her plot, whereas mine is right out my back door. So I really pushed myself this year to get my garden back into shape. It has been a struggle, but rewarding. Thank you for your honesty, humor, and vulnerability. You do not know the impact you have! Say hello to Einstein for me. Thank you for motivating me back to my garden. Cheers and happy gardening!

    I seem to recall there are some varieties of sweet pea that, like tomatoes, will cease growing if the growing tip is removed. There is a surprising amount of diversity in sweet peas especially annuals vs perennial types.

    4:38 They look quite pale your sweet peas. Maybe they need some nitrogen? Also for sowing carrots it's a good idea to wet your drills before sowing the seeds to help prevent them drying out.

  • @jimmydemetriou7847
    @jimmydemetriou78473 ай бұрын

    Hi Emma. Don't forget to deadhead the tulips, because if you don't the energy will go into forming the seeds rather than feeding the bulb for a new flower next year. You can wet the new carrot seed very well, then lay a piece of wood over the strip. Check after some days until you see the seedlings appear, then take the wood away and let the carrots grow on. The perpetual spinach flowers won't be much to see, but leave the plants to develop the seeds, then you can save them for next year. Lovely video today, I remember the feeling of entering the allotment and immediately feeling my breathing slow down and calmness and peace wash over me. Thanks for the reminder. XX

    Careful sowing multiple varieties of sweet corn in one bed. It looks like they are likely to cross pollinate which will affect the taste. From memory it’s recommended to keep different varieties separate, perhaps have a quick research before sowing to make sure :)

    Hi Emma, you could get yourself a rabbiter or rabbiting spade to remove your difficult roots. It's a long handled, narrow width spade used for digging post hole. It has extra weight because the handle is made of metal and, rather than using your foot to push it in, you welly it into the ground. Ideal for post holes (and digging out rabbits!) but also, great for digging out difficult plants and roots. I've used one for this purpose for years.

    Have you tried soaking and pre germinating your carrots? They don’t like being disturbed once putting roots down but ok in the early days. That way can be sure the seed is viable, has been hydrated, and has the beginning of roots to maintain that hydration.

    Emma, those were three cornered leeks by the bluebells, they are a choice edible for foraging and it's invasive so it's encouraged to dig it up and eat as much of it as you can. You can tell them apart from white hybrid bluebells by their triangular (hence three cornered leek) flower stalks!

    I quite like pulling up bindweed. I don't have an allotment but I've volunteered at community allotments and gardens a lot. I like pulling it all away from the plants it's growing over, then chasing the stems back to the roots and along the runners to get as much of it out of the ground as I can. I bought a flat with a garden two summers ago and I know exactly where the bindweed comes up now. I think I've gotten rid of most of it but it is coming under the fence from next door so I just need to keep checking back and pulling up what I can.
