The WORST veneer I've ever worked on... Furniture Restoration

----------
The veneer on this dresser was damaged beyond repair. Watch me restore it back to life!
I wasn't sure how the veneer edge bands would be as an alternative to one large veneer. They normally aren't used to cover a wide area, and I couldn't find anyone online who attempted the same thing. My main concern was that the contact cement would seep up between the strips as I pressed them down, but this wasn't a big issue. It happened in a few spots, and it was easily fixed with some careful knifing. In the end, the piece turned out to my satisfaction, especially since the stain color was very close to what I had envisioned with the Flagstone stain. However, I probably won't ever use veneer edge bands to cover a large surface area again... Buying a sheet of veneer would have been WAY easier!
Oh and I forgot to mention in the video. I didn't stain the drawers like I did with the body because I noticed that the veneer on the drawers were "reddish", so using the same Flagstone stain wouldn't have resulted in the same color as the body. Since the handles were already black, I didn't want the drawers themselves to be distracting. Thus, I decided to just topcoat right after sanding the existing stain.
Anyways, thank you for watching! If you have any questions, comment them below and I'll get back to you :)

I had an art teacher who had a wonderful quote (sorry, I do not know the author): "A man who works with his hands is a laborer. A man who works with his hands and his head is a craftsman. Seriously my one gripe. I was hooked until I saw the grey and let out an audible what the fuck. I think thats a difference of perspective though! I’d prefer it be remade as close as to the original. This guy put his own spin on it and it still looks great, just not the same.

Loved the new veneer pattern it looked so amazing until the stain then I got very disappointed, completely didn’t like the stain choice, it for me ruined that amazing pattern work. Drawers looked amazing! A clearer stain would have made it much more, but just my opinion as an armchair critic.

Ahh the "waterfall" dresser. I am a product of the 50's and that was SOOOOOO popular back then. I wondered how you would reveneer the top, love the strips. The color of stain was unexpected but makes it fit with modern decor even though its an antique like me!! Well done as always. 👏👏💯💯😀

One has seen so many of these curved top 1940’s/50’s dressers and they always have veneer damage. Enjoyable to watch the restoration and modern twist.
We use a towel and a iron on steam when we remove veneer and it works way better than a heat gun for all our resto furniture. The moisture makes for less flaking. Just an idea 💡
Of all the refurbish furniture videos I enjoy yours the best. You have an artist eye. Your ends always stun and are beautiful.

Good job. I'm not a real big fan of stains in general, I prefer the aniline wood dyes if I'm not going with natural. I also tend more towards hand rubbed finishes than painted ones. But to each his own, the dresser ended up looking very nice.

New subscriber here. I grew up with waterfall dressers and I’ve done some minor veneer repairs back in the day. The work you did here was masterful but I’m not a fan of the stain; it’s out of character. I favor browns myself. The stain on the handles was a perfect color and a wonderful contrast to whole piece. I admired how you put the veneer on: a tedious task and a smashing outcome.
That's beautiful. I was born in the 50s & I remember seeing those kind of dressers at my grandparents houses. Id give anything to have one of them now. Love how you modernized it with the black drawer pulls. Very nice!

@@ModernMakeovers Yes I can absolutely understand why!!!
I love the way you bring back the original look to the piece your working on and still making it look modern.
Lovely restoration! I think the grey stain would look better on a wood of lighter colour. The brown of the wood muddies it up in this case. But of course that's how we learn. Through experimenting, trying new things and learning along the way.
The chest looks stunning! You do such beautiful work. Thank you for sharing the process with the public. It’s always interesting how your pieces turn out.

The edge banding on top was genius!!! Such a stunning outcome.
I think it's stunning... The piece even looks "proud" of it's new look/makeover. There's not much that we can do with our hands aside from bringing life back into a piece lost in time that would've otherwise hung out so long to be tossed aside. Your skills are amazing and keep up the fantastic work. I'm sure soon we will all see u on TV and living your dreams! Best regards to you and yours.
I’ve been working on a dresser like this myself, and whoever tried to restore it before me DESTROYED the veneer. I was at a loss for what to do, and I didn’t wanna paint it so I did what you did and used edge banding over it! It turned out wonderful! Your work is hugely inspiring! ❤️
Old is new again! What a beautiful job. It’s not a dupe, there’s nothing like it out there. Not a restoration, it’s far better than the original. The use of that edge banding was genius! If you sell it let us know your inputs and profit.
I really don't like waterfall furniture AT ALL. I've owned two sets that were passed down to us and the happiest day was when I watched them drive away in the back of someone else's truck! 🤷🏻♀️ I've seen a lot of people in the furniture painting groups I belong to/admin try to pretty them up with paint, stencils, transfers, etc, but to me it always looks like putting lipstick on a pig. There are very, very, very few that I've seen that actually look pretty good, but THIS one looks great! I think it's because you embraced what it IS, and didn't try to force it to be something it isn't. This style reads very masculine and you've managed to honor that - but also modernize it and actually enhance it's inherent style. This is one waterfall piece I'd actually like in my house! Bravo, Andy! 💞

I liked the washed stain look on the sides but on the veneer top I think I would have preferred to see it colored more like the drawer fronts. The dark handles I was unsure about when you said black stain but seeing the finished product black handles were definitely the right call. Always great to see a ruined piece get saved.
My dad told me to fix a desk that had veneer on it. I had absolutely no patience and just went at the edges with a chisel and peeled everything off, then sanded the surface. Probably not a perfect job but it worked
