In this ride we are passing the location where the train disaster at Harmelen took place on Monday, January 8, 1962 at 9.19 am. The collision between two passenger trains left 93 dead and 52 injured, making this the largest train disaster in the history of the railways in the Netherlands. This accident resulted in an accelerated introduction of ATB, and we have also seen yellow beacons along the track at certain signals ever since. In deze rit rijden we langs de locatie waar de treinramp bij Harmelen plaatsvond op maandag 8 januari 1962 om 9.19 uur. Bij de botsing tussen twee reizigerstreinen vielen 93 doden en 52 gewonden, waarmee dit de grootste treinramp uit de geschiedenis van de spoorwegen in Nederland is.     Ik heb morgen mijn medische keuring voor de opleiding MVR, onlangs ben ik door de psycholoogische keuring heen gekomen. Ik ben ondertussen ook aangenomen bij de ns (tag van rnet) en de school waar ik de opleiding wil gaan doen. Door uw filmpjes wil ik sinds 2018 het beroep machinist later doen, en dat is nog 1 stap verwijderd. Ik hoop dat ik erdoorheen kom en ik wil u bedanken voor de inspiratie die u mij heeft opgedaan :D

    Drink geen koffie vooraf en span je niet teveel in, ook je bloeddruk wordt gemeten. Ruim op tijd aanwezig zijn dus ;-)

    I still remember this train disaster well: I was a 17-year-old high school student and I ate lunch with acquaintances because I had been a bit sick at that time and lived about 10 km outside the provincial capital. I heard about the disaster over the radio around 12 o'clock. At home my family was one of the first to have a black and white TV and there we saw the terrible images later at night. It made more of an impression than, for example, the plane disaster on Tenerife by KLM. May they all rest in peace.

    I read the Wikipedia report on the accident. It seems that in the Netherlands, as pretty much everywhere else, systems that could prevent a serious accident don't get put in place until after one has occurred.

    This is why many modern trains now have the signals displayed in the cab itself. Various type of signals on the side of the tracks can be sometimes hard to read in inclement weather, especially fog.

    glad that some humans learn from mistakes and try preventing them .Its a shame that it took 93 people, on the other hand we can now enjoy better and safer travel. Great video keep it going!

    Nee, als je even leest zie je dat dit gewoon een normale IC dienst is ;-) De IC Ut - Gvc stopt enkel op Gouda.

    Travelling to Zandvoort from Rotterdam on the Hofpleinlijn? Quite a walk from the line's terminal station at Scheveningen. The Hofpleinlijn by the way was the first electrified line in the Netherlands as the line's viaduct in Rotterdam was the first main concrete construction in the country.

    ProRail should double the tracks (from two to four) between Utrecht, Gouda and The Hague and between Gouda and Rotterdam, so a lot more intercity trains and sprinter trains can ride between those places. Before Covid these trains were so full in rush hour, I often felt like a sardine, standing on the balcony. Finding a free seat was a hopeless task. In that aspect Covid came as a relieve, I finally managed to get a seat every day. All the office and government employees worked from home. And don’t forget to also double the tracks between Woerden and Leiden, from one track to two tracks. It is silly that these are still single tracks. This is hindering progress.

    I agree, this is a very busy line and it could benefit from a doubling. I travel between The Hague and Gouda during my daily commute by train and if a sprinter has just a 2 minute delay, the intercity needs to slow down for it.

    ja en een vriend van mijn vader zou rijden op de a 1100 serie kleur blauw maar is niet door gegaan mijn vader en ik zouden ook met deze trein mee gaan maar we zaten in een andere provincies samen op de trein bij Nijmegen en Venlo om wagons naar Tilburg te brengen we hebben geluk gehad dit is een vreselijke ramp in de spoor geschiedenis van de NS op 8 januari 1962 gewonden en doden gelukkig is het bij HARMELEN nu anders gemaakt grt mars die samen met mijn vader er naar toe moest met a 2 loks de 2400 serie kleur bruin

    That's why you shouldn't build crossroads of rails. You still have such a terrible one, although they could have made a tunnel or a bridge there for a long time

    13:11 - on the outside of the righthand rail there is an interesting "whatsit" that light makes it look like the material is welded into place. It probably isn't. And might be some poor soul's lost cell phone from its shape. And yes, I can see how that junction could be a real disaster site waiting to happen, again and again, had it not been "fixed". A real 100% fix would also remove the switches. Otherwise two trains could conceivably contest each other over possession of the right of way past the switch junction. (And I bet somebody could figure out how even more rail and no switches could invite some form of disaster.) I note that ATB seems to be a little long on the tooth, too. Is it in the process of being replaced with the next generation of safety equipment? And if so is the whole rail network scheduled for upgrade? {^_-}

    This is why I don't watch El-Al Boeing 747 cargo jet Cabview Holland Dutch Airways videos. Amsterdam to Tel Aviv. Amsterdam, Holland ... October 4, 1992. Plane plunged straight into an apartment building in the Bijimermeer section of Amsterdam. A massive fireball exploded throughout the building. About 100 people were dead. An exact number was impossible to determine, as the explosion made body identification extremely difficult and the building housed mainly 'undocumented immigrants' from Suriname and Aruba. Tragic as both accidents were, I have learned my lesson. I conduct a complete safety check on my computer and computer swivel chair prior to watching ANY videos from the Netherlands. I always have my US Passport AND México FMM Visa Turista ID card with me on the El Rob computer table... away from the donuts and coffee. You just can't take too many precautions. Even though I can still swim pretty good, I have the inflatable life jacket below my computer chair for my Holland Dutch canal videos ... with a can of shark and duck repellent. This video kinda put me under a dark cloud here today (clear, sunny, 27°C/80°F.), but I suppose we all needed the reminder. Gracias por tu video. RT sends... envía...
