Being more selective and dropping series are the main pieces of advice I try to give to others. Personally to me nowadays downsizing my collection feels just as good as adding things to it now! And is especially nice to get some money and space back as well. Totally valid point though about getting rid of stuff and then potentially regretting it later and wanting to go back to it but I just know its bound to happen sometimes as we're gonna regret getting rid of certain stuff but I'm not gonna let that stop me from getting rid of things because I know most of it I likely won't miss. And also buying it again can feel nice too!

I don’t consider myself a collector I’m just getting into buying manga books but I will say this I like buying manga that I’m actually interested in I don’t care if it’s popular or not. Im very opened minded and will always give a series a chance to at least see if I like it. Also I think it’s important to take your time wit manga reading you don’t have binge a whole series in one night lol I’m a slow reader because I like to be invested in these stories And not rush them guys it’s not a race to see who finish a series the fastest we spend all this money on these books take your time enjoy them same with collecting you don’t have to buy everything at once. Work up to it build slowly and let your collection get bigger over time

I've kind of always prided me in the fact that i don't just jump on to titles just because they're being hyped. I've always been good with quickly figuring out what I like in terms of story, character design, art style etc. But I think as collectors we learn from mistakes such as impulse buying or getting into the hype of something then later regretting it because now it's no longer interesting and so forth. I collected and read superhero comics for many years and let me tell you have a lot of stuff that i regret spending money but I don't get rid of it because It's a hassle and I'm lazy lol. So when I started buying manga physically instead of reading them on online, I already had it in my head well I already know what i like and what I want to buy which is why i think my collection isn't huge like most collections I see here on KZread. I mean your collection is easily much bigger than mine. lol.

There are some highly praised things that I don't like or feel like they are overrated, but if someone else likes them, good for them, as you said in the video, if everyone had the same opinion, we would learn less things. I always wanted to have a manga collection, but I didn't have the space, I only have around 40 volumes from when I was young. I will have my own space relatively soon, so I decided to make a list of mangas that I want to collect, because I won't have infinite space, or money, and It's really hard deciding what to add to the list. I made some rules for myself, like having to read at least the first 5 volumes online before deciding, be extremely wary of mangas with irregular releases or on hiatus, or being extremely picky with mangas that are less than 8/10 for me, which would have filtered some of the mangas that I already have, but I find it really hard to just stop collecting some of them, because I still like them, even if they are not as worth it as others.

This video tells me that i overthink things when purchasing manga 😂. Like I'm selective when it comes to manga. I'm the type of person that would go to the store and see a manga series that interests me and reads the synopsis to see it's in my taste. The struggles in manga collecting are on point in this vid. But i would say ppl should be more diverse in collecting series. Don't be afraid to assume that x series will be trash. What matters is that u as a person enjoys it or not. And thats what makes your collection and opinions special.

I rented physical manga too read throughout elementary school to uni. Those books were old, bootlegged, and occasionally incomplete. My childhood friend was also super into manga. We usually split the rental fee. Now as an adult I really subscribe to a minimalist life style. But luckily my friend has settled down, bought a nice big house and had a son. So while i stick to reading manga online nowadays, I buy manga collections for my friend's son. Best of both worlds.

Honestly one of the things that helped me stop buying after covid was the fact that a lot of these series can be found online in one way or another. I sold all my single volumes of MHA before the box set arrived and when I found they were all Italy prints I was a bit upset. I ended up returning it and realizing that if I really want to read MHA I can do so on VIZ/Shonen Jump until they release a collected version I like. Still bought the OP box set 4 and plan to buy the 5th assuming there is no quality issues etc.

Truly remarkable way of collecting manga or books. Going off of straight hype and often times not even buying a volume 1 to see whatsup. Hilarious approach that surely leads to some trash box sets and what not ending up on your shelf.

I have a small collection such as Monster, Oshi no Ko, Uzumaki, Sakamoto Days, Blood On the Track. I'm a selective person, so manga that I definitely like will be a collection and also manga that I haven't watched or don't have an anime adaptation.

Great video! I agree that alot people get into a series just because many people are hyping it up. That's not to say that the series isn't good... but I wish people would give less popular series a shot. And I agree that people have different tastes and that's OK! Everyone is different so it would only make sense that everyone would like different series! I guess I'll use this opportunity to list some of my less popular (or less talked about) favorite series, lol : Mermaid Boys, No Longer Heroine, My Boy, Cinderella Closet, Choujin X, Daytime Shooting Star, Absolute Boyfriend, Girl Got Game, Black Torch, Noragami, Love Me Love Me Not, My Special One, Oresama Teacher, and Shortcake cake. Also some great ones that are only digital for now that I wish would get english physical releases soon: the Walls Between Us, We Must Never Fall in Love, Love that's an Understatement, My Dear Detective, the Story of Our Unlikely Love, and Yamaguchi kun isn't so Bad. I'm very glad Nina the Stary Bride is getting released physically this month!! Just an FYI, I'm mostly into action, romance, comedy and slice of life. So if you're into those genres, I suggest these series. ^-^

There’s nothing that infuriates me more than the people who shit on others favorite series. That’s why I don’t use Twitter 😂, outside of it at least it’s not too too bad. I just don’t get it though, sure there’s also series I don’t enjoy, but there’s always a way to phrase things so that it’s not so negative. “I didn’t really connect with this series and it’s characters” instead of “yeah I thought it was total crap, it sucked” just goes such a long way and it’s really not hard to do... Great video as always man!

If I had it my way, I’d have started collecting 2012-2013 after my friend introduced me to Manga with ‘Wolf Children.’ For whatever reason though, I was too nervous to speak up about it, so I went years watching others enjoy the hobby. 2020 came around and like others gave me a lot of time to think and I realized that the fear of collecting was keeping me back from something that would make me happy. So now I’ve only been collecting since 2021, and mine is comparatively small. I always heard stories of people reading manga as it was still publishing only for them to hate how it ended and having wasted a ton of money on it. So that has a huge impact on how I collect too. But I also decided to be brave with that and took a chance, reading some manga on pirated sites first before deciding on collecting. Currently, I have taken a chance on: The Girl From the Other Side, Dungeon Meshi, Land of the Lustrous, Witch Hat Atelier, Gokurakugai, Alpi the Soul Sender. All of them read online, some I already have a few physical copies of, and most of them haven’t finished their story yet. But I adore all of them. I also have some of Junji Ito’s works and have started collecting Vampire Hunter. Like you said about ones going out of print, I had one day hoped to collect Trigun Maximum. I adored the original anime and was quite pleased with the reboot so it was a devastating shock to hear that about halfway through the reboot airing, the physical copies were announced to go out of print. A strange decision especially since it’s supposed to get a season two and was quite well received.

I feel like I generally have a pretty good sense of which manga I will like and which one I won't. Even then, when it comes to completely dropping a manga series I'd been reading, it's usually been cause I sorta just... slowly lose interest in it and not necessarily because I came to actually dislike it. Honestly, I think that's why I don't exactly... feel bad about some of it taking up space on my shelf? It probably comes off as a bit weird, but I like the idea of, despite not following X or Y series through to its end, still having those 3-4 volumes up there on the shelf, even if they're just a reminder that I gave the series a try and that was that.

Still, I think if there's a series you don't enjoy, no matter how many volumes you have or you finish it, I think it's not good mentally to keep things you don't enjoy because reading is very time consuming, and why keep reading a series if you don't like it? I do think it's good to collect series you fear is going to go OOP, but I don't think you should get it if you don't think you'll like it. Everyone have different tastes like you mentioned, and there are some things which a lot of people like, which I don't don't. But it is what it is and I still think the collection we have should be as personal as possible with no regrets.

My issue is I like something and I start spending on everything of that franchise... Like Nier I went a little extra there getting the White Version Getting the OSTs even though they are the same exact tracks but altered somehow like orchestra or 8 bit or piano lol then there are the light novels that were good. It started with a game and I ended up getting other stuff for it, I even tried for the pilot DIY kit but was missing pieces so I returned it. Its the same for other games like I pre ordered Horizon Zero Dawn back in the day, loved it got artbook for it, nice book pages filled completely, got the Thunderjaw Pop, misssed out on the Watcher Pop. This is just for gaming... now for Anime and Manga on the other hand... Novels Figures Artbooks OSTs Trading Cards... theres so much merch out there I wish the West had more anime/manga Japanese merch and services like the cafes spas hotels amusment parks with anime themes. So yes this is an expensive hobby and may end up regretting some stuff or thinking other stuff isnt worth it... plus the space...

I have been collecting comic books since i was in junior high (2003). I already make all those mistakes. First of all you need to determine what kind of collector you are. If you are a person that just collect everything and you have unlimited money, go ahead. But for me personally my current collection are all stuff that i have finished reading. And i want to read again in it's best condition. If you don't want to reread that title don't buy it. This is the simple rule of thumb for me in collecting physical media.

I was the same I collected everything and anything, getting series blindly or because someone said it's good. I got high rise invasion and got it all before reading it didn't like the first Omni I thought now I've bought it I might as well finish it. It didn't get better and the ending annoyed me so I sold it but I feel all that time I wasted collecting it and reading it and money I spent chasing it. Now I'm more selective in what I collect I give a series 3 volume limit to get me into it. I'll get 3 if I don't like it I drop it. I don't go chasing the "best" manga. I went to travelling man (UK based company) they had a warehouse clearance and I bought stupid amounts then months later I went they was getting rid of them for a reason I got loads of volumes from series I don't want to collect. I ended up giving most of them away losing money on them

I'm just now seeing this video, hahaha. But the one thing I hate about manga collecting is when I really enjoy a series, and then it falls off, and I completely lose interest. Cause by that point I'm already X amount of volumes in, and I feel like I HAVE to complete the story. Examples being My Hero and Jujutsu Kaisen, which I loved a ton! But their stories started going to shit, and I'm like, "Okay great, I can either stop collecting and have an incomplete set OR satisfy the completionist in me and finish the story and maybe sell it later." So I definitely read online as much as possible before I decide to buy. But I've been slowly collecting since 2016, and there are some series that I adore that I always want to keep. I'm currently getting through and reading everything I have. It will take a while, but I'm slowly making progress.

If you want a decent and fairly easy volume boost, you’ll want to check if your video editing software has a Limiter in the audio effects, or get something like audacity that might have a Limiter effect in it, that’s all you need to focus on. It might have a few controls that are harder to understand at first glance but it’s nothing a 5-10 min KZread vid can’t teach you. Or if you ever have specific audio questions feel free to hit me up if you want, I’m not a professional or anything but I did have to learn quite a bit to make music related vids. Good luck! ✌️

Its such a huge bummer to see you talking about how much of your collection you haven’t read. If I had a full set of Lone Wolf & Cub I’d read that shit. I hope you read them or sell them to someone who would. Otherwise good video. I don’t intend this to be a hostile comment.

Watches the video an hour after getting 4 volumes of Noragami, box set of Nausicaa, and a bunch of Log Horizon light novels delivered. Hilarious. I'm not a *collector* , just an idiot who likes to have their actual favourite things completed. It just sometimes snowballs. I was like "I need all Ito Junji manga that comes out in English..!" which was *TRUE* for about 2 years. Then the new Soichi story collection came out few months back. I hate those stories. So, no. Not buying that. EVER. I would never buy a series that I didn't enjoy the story and/or art style of.

Coming from someone who’s been involved in comics his whole life manga collecting is extremely weird. People don’t really seem to care about rarity and condition that much, they just enjoy seeing a lot of books. I usually have around 1000 comics but only 25 in my personal collection. Everything else gets sold and used to increase the value of what’s in my PC. Manga is a depreciating asset for the most part.

Sure it's surface level but there are so many people who fall into these traps when collecting manga. I think the aim of this video was just to inform new manga collectors about the cons of the hobby, and to spark a discussion in comments. You can't really fault him for not attempting to psychoanalyze manga collectors and referencing studies on consumerism when that wasn't his intention in the first place.
