Cannot stress enough. Do not buy something ***SOLELY*** for the reason that you're afraid it won't be available later. If you're not particularly interested in a book, fear of missing out should never be the only reason to buy it. Genuinely wanting to read it? Now *that* is a great reason to buy it. You have decades and decades of time to buy books. Your shelf will not remain empty because you missed that one this month.

More like: Don't feel like you need to buy it immediately. Even collector editions will last a few months/maybe one or two years max before running out. Telling them "You have decades and decades to buy books" is terrible advise. All editions go out of print and will eventually run out. After that your only option is aftermarket/used versions and that, 90% of the time, increases the price a ton, often times making them 5-10 times more expensive depending on the series/author and how long has it been out of print. It's fine to wait a couple of months, but waiting years is only if you want to intentionally screw yourself over and be forced to sell a kidney to get what costed a couple hundred bucks or less originally.

Considering mangas are more like novels then western comics, in that theres actually a finite story to tell, I definitely agree w/ setting the goal of finishing a series before starting a new one. They're actually pretty similar. Comics have long running stuff like the main Spider-Man or Batman series (there's a ton of finite side series) and manga has stuff like One Piece and Naruto. Comics also has thousands of finite stories like Preacher, Sandman, V for Vendetta just like Manga has Spirit Circle or Samurai Executioner.

I’m just starting out collecting but I think I have a tip about the budget things. I noticed after ordering two batches of mangas that I am very bad at sticking to my budget so I have now set up (or rather gotten my mom to help me lol) a separate bank account specifically dedicated towards buying mangas, so each month 200kr (about $22, I’m Swedish) goes into that account and I can spend that money without having to worry about overspending cause that money has been set aside for that purpose and that purpose only. I thought it was pretty smart so I’m sharing it in case someone else wanna do it as well, idk if this is like a duh thing or not but yeah, that’s it

Good advices for sure, budgeting and fomo are my main enemies atm, I literally have 30+ volumes series complete that I haven't started reading. I'm a pretty good judge of what I'm going to like but I definitely need to stop buying more than i read (same with videogames). It's hard for me to not take advantage of sales and the biggest publisher in Mexico for manga does a lot of them through the year, so I end up getting many volumes for either different series or many for just 1 or 2.

I just started my manga collection and my sole rule (other than my available manga budget), is that I will only buy manga I've already read or watched as anime and that I loved which means that once those real books come home, I will, for sure, read them over and over again. Yes, I should be supporting the creators, but as a teenagers who isn't allowed to work yet and doesn't get an allowance (I live off new years money for stuff I want), I have to use that money and holiday gifts to my advantage. I currently have the entire given and 86 series, which are fairly small, but I am incredibly, happy

Heya! Just a few other pieces of advice I'd like to add as a librarian, especially for people collecting used books: 1) If the book is a library discard and has any permanent marker on the cover, get that marker off immediately. It can be very damaging, not just to the book that it's on, but also to the book beside it. It can be easily removed most of the time with rubbing alcohol. 2) For any repair involving paper, I use a combination of two products from Lineco: their acid free PVA glue, and their document repair tape. Both can be a bit tricky to use, because the PVA dries very quickly, and the repair tape is tissue thin, but both have completely changed the way I repair books at home. I wouldn't recommend using any rubber cement or super glue or anything other than PVA (or starch paste, but that's its own thing) anywhere near something made of paper because in the long run, those glues can do more harm than good. They don't have the flexibility of PVA, and I'm not aware of any that are acid-free.

I usually plan out my buys for the year via a spreadsheet (your Viz 4th quarter video was so helpful). I also keep a list of "Series I'd like to own" for the next time a sale hits. (there tends to be sales a few times a year up North). Your hunting tips were spot on too. What I really enjoyed though was your tips to start out for a younger audience. A much needed video! The tips on FOMO and on not buying something just because it's popular in the collector circle are EXTREMELY important. FOMO is my biggest enemy (mainly with omnibus/hardcover collections for American comics), but I've been getting better at keeping it in check. The "not buying just because it's popular" really rings true for newer/younger collectors, I think. They're more impressionable, and get excited about being able to say they got some popular or sought after book/series. Then it either sits on their shelf forever, or they read it and find out it's not for them.

This was very informative and helpful, well done! I would add that, if you want to prevent your books from yellowing, separate your healthy books from the ones that aren't. I have found that if you put a new book besides a book that it's yellowed or is starting to, most of the time, it propagates to the new book as if it were a virus.

Hi Ryley, I just wanted to say you did a really great job on this video. Seriously, this is deeply insightful not only for Manga or Comic collecting, but for Novels, Figures, Trading Cards, and other collectibles out there. Now, I'm not that big of a Manga collector but I do collect Comic books and Cards, I was watching a video on card collecting and the KZread algorithm brought me here, so again, good job on making this video, expanding your viewership, and your wife definitely deserves some credit for suggesting the idea. Subscribed. (:

I will forever be grateful that early on in my manga reading journey, I discovered the wonders of the public library system. I got very familiar with the library collection at 3-4 libraries within driving distance of where I lived. Lots of libraries have ebooks and online catalogs that allow you the put on hold. Saved me so much money, leaving me to only have to invest in things I already knew I liked. I was able to read a lot of older and more obscure stuff as well

Great Video! Very good tips, being a long time collector myself (mostly movies and games, but also comics and books) it's really interesting to hear other collectors habits. Learning from others to listen to the voice of your reason it's also really important, as I struggle with things of wanting to buy collections I'm not so sure or the FOMO, which is my mayor problem (specially in VGames, since there's sooo many limited collections all the time).

I startedmy collection a few years ago after reading the mangas at the school library or the ones I borrowed from my friends. I then wanted to get my own little collection of the mangas I liked or the ones I was interested in! I always had fun looking for the series I wanted and reading the books as soon as I got home and I am still enjoying it! I'm really proud of the almost 80 volumes I have and realy happy to get some tips from this video as my collection grows slowly but surely

So I just started collecting last year bc I had just rewatched FMA brotherhood and randomly went into Barnes And Nobles and happened to find the first 2 volumes of the Fullmetal manga editions. Ever since I've been up to date on the collection and have since grown mine to most of a bookshelf. That said, I'm glad I found this video bc it offered insights into this new hobby that would hopefully save my wallet a few bucks and help focus what I want in my collection :) thank you sir for showing up in my dash when you did

I've done the whole popping into old comic shops thing quite a few times. I had an interview a couple of months ago and decided to stop by a comic shop about 15 minutes away from where I was interviewing after I got done, and was pleasantly surprised to find that this shop had some old Shaman King books there (the original Viz-printed ones). I was able to pick up a few of the later volumes for the price of what one of them goes for currently.

One of my favorite things to do when I'm reading a new series is to borrow the first few from the library. If I enjoy them them I can always go back and buy them for my personal collection. That way I don't have to worry about wasting money on series I end up not liking!

Outside of the US I definitely would NOT recommend RightStuf, as their shipping far outweighs their cheap prices. Living in Australia where retail for manga is typically double what it is in the US, it still wasn't worth it with how high shipping was Also, the Kallax is awesome for double and triple stacking manga, great if you have limited space

Love this video! I think it was much needed :) I started by buying my favourite series (Claymore) & kinda went from there. The library is a great place to read a couple volumes (or the whole series) of something to see if you like it. At least that was what I did, back in the day lol Definitely think the Viz or Shonen Jump app is a great place. I'd say even finish something before buying & if you love it enough that you'll be re-reading it I think that is what makes a collection worth having :)

I also collect books but they’re just not all manga. I totally agree with looking at used books. I always check free little libraries and thrift stores multiple times a week. You would be surprised what you can find for free. Also if a school by you closes they often will give you as many library books as you want for free

I just love knowing there're videos like yours expressing how to collect or even read manga. I've bought, purged, moved away from home and started a small collection again -- its a process and the main thing I can add is realizing what mangas are new and recently printed. I know the internet and used book stores exist, but that doesn't always means its 1) Accessible 2) Reliable (e.g. scams). Be highly aware of what you're collecting, if you can read it online --for now-- I say skip the collecting and read it there. Collect what you enjoy first or the manga, SINGULAR, you're most interested in first.

Solid advice. I 've been collecting a little over a year now and have 236 manga and 57 light novels. I've been testing out new series here and there and finding a plethora of interesting content from videos with suggestions for various titles. Fear of missing out can be an issue. The demand for manga is on the rise and printers can't keep up with demand. Some stuff is out of stock and takes ages to be re-reprinted. It can be advisable to buy stuff when you see it available, because you don't know when you will be able to find it again. If you don't like it, you can always try to resell it at a later date.

I've definitely been learning patience with manga collecting. Sometimes I get an unnecessary sense of urgency that makes me impulsively buy and spend too much money I don't have when the manga isn't going anywhere. I had to work on my mentality (with spending money in general) and started considering my purchases much more carefully. And it really pays off. I recently walked into a half price books with no expectation of finding manga and found 5 dollar volumes of Takane and Hana 7-12 and Horimiya 13, which are all volumes I was looking for based on what I have collected so far and they were brand new looking!

If there are multiple releases of a series (hardcover, omnibus, 3-in-1), determine which version you want BEFORE you dedicate funds to it. Once you have chosen the version you want, stick to it uniformly and keep track of release dates so you know when a new entry in that version is released so you can budget for that release. In the case of older out-of-print books, always check local thrift shops as you never know what gems you might find for half of what ebay sellers may price titles at.
