The WORST Team in AFL History

Спорт

West Coast have played extremely bad this season, but are they really the worst team in AFL History? Watch me delve into that in this video.

    I am a die hard eagles fan and i 100% agree with you We need a change in leadership because even though luke shuey is a gun when he plays, he is always injured. The players for west coast are like a family and would do anything for eachother but are just disappointed in how they are performing. It is hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel but after a good rebuild and change in leadership, i think we can be back in the game in a few years

    It's simple, the mature players at the eagles are past their prime or perenially injured and their young players arent being guided enough because of it. Shuey, Gaff, Yeo, Natanui, Mcgovern, Hurn all been out injured and clearly past their peak performance. Their young kids aren't ready yet. And yet they can still win this week against North.

    yep they beat the Roos but then got flogged by freo, another 100 point loss. As bad as the Roos are at least they are not getting flogged by 100 points most games. Look at the young guys coming through for the Roos and compare that to the eagles and another thing the Roos done was get rid of all the older guys in one go unlike the eagles who keep on giving contracts to old/injury prone players who are well past their best, they are kept on for their marketing value because the eagles are run as a business now and not a football club. While I agree that the club is up there as one of the worst teams historically, I think you are being a little bit unfair on a couple of points. First, implying the poor performance could be because of a drug culture problem is really strong claim. Willie/Junior Rioli (played 13 games for West Coast between 2020 and 2022 and now plays for Port) dodging a drug test in 2019 because he's an idiot and likely had weed in his system (now legal in many parts of the world) isn't quite the same thing as the clubs legitimate drug issues of the 2000's. What evidence have you seen that would suggest these problems have resurfaced? Also why during the height of the drug culture issues 15-20 years ago did it not seem to impact performance? They played in 2 grand finals in 2005/2006 in the midst of this. You also haven't mentioned what I believe to be the number 1 factor in why the team has not performed this year - injuries. I will concede that a number of the injuries this season have been soft tissue and poor list management is a factor in this (2019/2020 basically no draft picks inside top 50), however, there have also been a huge amount of unpreventable contact or general illness based injuries. At times the club has had 20+ players unavailable through injury (currently 13). That's half the squad. Why did this not get a mention? Not only does this mean the side hasn't been able to field anything close to its best 22 players, it has other compounding effects. You can't drop players who are out of form because there has been literally no other players available at selection. You can't train properly, because you don't have enough fit players for any kind of match sim. Young players get called up when they are still a long way off in their development and get bags of 10 kicked on them, which has got to have a massive confidence impact. Young players can't settle and learn any nuance of a fixed position with the same players around them, because last week they were playing in the back pocket but this week they need to play on a wing, also there were 6 other changes, so the overall team synergy is a disaster. Surely this has to be a more significant factor than "maybe Ben Cousins things again and remember how Chad Fletcher overdosed 16 years ago?" As to "hard to see light at the end of the tunnel". As a fan, I've seen heaps to be positive about this year. Rueben Ginbey (injured for rest of season), Jai Culley (season), Jamaine Jones (2 weeks), Connor West (season), Elijah Hewit, Noah Long, Brady Hough, Campbell Chesser, Rhett Bazzo, Ryan Maric, have all shown promising signs this year. Bailey Williams has developed into a legit ruckman who can also win some clearances and lay a tackle, which i did not expect to see. It's the first time in a few years that we are seeing some high quality youth getting games. I'm fully expecting more suffering next year, but I've seen enough glimpses this year to keep me positive. I think "worst team ever, because drugs maybe" is a bit of a Kane Cornes level take. I guess you got me though, since I clicked and responded.

    as a West Coast fan, I think you are probably right….this may just be the worst team in AFL history. Sure the player list is a threadbare, but with the talent they have now, this side should be performing much better than they are. This club has been demoralised by a 43-3 record over the last 3 years and many senior players just don’t care about losing…just happy to continue cashing their cheques. I am mostly worried about the younger players and how this bad situation is affecting their development as football players.

  • @athlonen

    @athlonen

    11 ай бұрын

    Again, I still see West Coast doing a hell of a lot better than Fitzroy did their last 2 years, and certainly a lot better than University. Yes, a lot of their senior players are out injured, but those that are there need to seriously step up. Their actions and record now remind me of Melbourne during their tanking scandal, and that it took a good 6 years and 5 coaches to get that right, plus a Paul Roos iron dossier. As far as their younger players go, I can see a lot of them leaving because they don't want to be stuck in an AFL side where a BAFL or USAFL side could beat them. They are being pushed down the track to beating Kade Simpson's VFL/AFL record for the most losses of any player, and that isn't a good record to have. What they need, from the board room down to the senior players is a good old fashioned Ron Barassi/Mick Malthouse spray, where the entire lot gets absolutely baked; CEO, board room, coaches, senior players, the entire lot. someone needs to push some major culture into that club.

    The part about drug culture really doesnt fit in this video at all. Willie substituted a drug test for having marijuana in his system. He got banned not because of the drug itself but because substituting the test is a worse act. The drug culture has died out and has been since we got rid of the 2006 drug filled core. The rest of this is fair enough but i dont think that specific part has any relevance.

    It really doesn't matter that West Coast fans are trying to dodge the worst ever team on historical statistics - the fact is the team is pitifully awful and showing all the signs of decaying further. It is not the here and now of dodging the lowest number of wins that matters - but resetting the team internally so that eventually the team shows more W's than L's.

    This seems to be a very uneducated opinion; half their senior players haven’t got on the park, and they have a serious lack of 21-25 year old talent. Not to mention for 8-10 weeks they had about 25 players to select from. Our of their senior players, Hurn (11), Nic Nat (0), Shuey (9) Ryan (3), Cripps (7) and Mcgovern (5) have played a combined total of 35 games. Compare that to Hawthorne: Breust (16), Wingard (11), Sicily (14), Impey (17), Amon (18) and Hardwick (18) have played a combined total of 94 games. WC have been putrid on and off the field but at least look at it in context of what is actually happening at the club.

    I was under the understanding that Willie Rioli didn't technically dodge the drug test but that he tampered with it because he couldn't piss enough of a sample after a game. He added gatorade to his sample to top it to the level they needed. Stupid really when he was actually watched. I still believe the drama from it created issues at the club but that it's injuries and miss management by the fitness coach (for example, who's bright idea was it for Nic Nat to bulk up? 2 knee reconstructions, plays in a position that requires a lot of high jumping and they get him to add kgs to his frame???) is the main reason WCE are where they are.

    Linking the drug culture from over 10 years ago to now is such a ridiculous and tenuous link to make. You’re extrapolating from one players decision to take illicit drugs across an entire team, with no actual evidence to back it up?
