    Catchers are not allowed to block the plate anymore. If they do the runner is called safe. So they are supposed to only tag the runner. Silly new rules making it awkward for both runner and catcher. Runner can't run into catcher, to try and knock him down and the ball free but the catcher is not allowed to block the plate in any way so they are supposed to stand aside and tag them. Which means the runner is safe if the catcher blocks the plate but if the runner collides with the catch in theory he's called out... So crap like this happens.

  • @FunkinItUp08

    @FunkinItUp08

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@JasonPotapoff This rule doesn't apply for the catcher here. It's a judgement call and when they are this dead to rights, they usually just kind of slow down and accept they're out. With Gary moving, Villar essentially said fuck it and did a last second "slide" to get under the tag. Sanchez was afraid of the contact and should be embarrassed. If he gets run into on this play, which was going to happen, Villar is still out. Embarrassing. In the end, we can all just sit back and thank Buster Posey for never learning how to block the plate properly and ruin it for everyone with his bitchy manager forcing a rule change nobody wanted.

    Sanchez was clearly thinking (wrongly) that he had to get out of the baseline to “not block the plate.” Once you have the ball, you’re allowed to “block the plate” but calls have happened where the catcher drops it so he doesn’t “have possession” and the runner is automatically scored. MLB needs to clean up that rule

    Nope. In this instance the catcher has to tag the runner with the ball itself or with the hand/mitt that's holding the ball. Had this been a 'force play' - in other words, if Villar had started the play on third base with runners on first and second as well - the catcher would only have had to touch the base once he had the ball. But in a non-force situation the runner has to be tagged by the ball or by the hand that's holding the ball.

    In a softball game, as 3rd base coach I sent my 6'6" roommate Dave home, who I call the slowest non-injured teammate I've ever had. The throw beat him by a mile, Dave slid home, and the catcher tagged him up high after Dave had come to a complete stop. The ump called him out, but Dave's foot was already on home plate. I complained a little. The ump gave me a Mentos look and shrugged. We were winning by a lot, so it was more funny than frustrating.

    Well I mean, you're looking at one of the absolute worst defensive catchers in all of baseball, not what the average game looks like. He's 55th out of 60 catchers at framing pitches and 35th of 54 in defense. Every sport is a waste of time if you truly want to look at it that way though. Most football and baseball games have under 20 min of "game action" while hockey and Bball are under an hour worth. I wouldn't not watch because of a bad play here and there though, that's complete nonsense.

  • @nickdfoxy

    @nickdfoxy

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@173jaSon371 But here's the thing. An average NBA game only lasts 2:11. MLS games are generally about 2 hours. But baseball is about 3:15 this year. And unlike other sports where there's action most of the time, there's a whole bunch of standing around in baseball. So one is MUCH less tolerant of lazy or stupid play, because a player is called upon to do something that's actually physical a tiny percentage of the time he's on the field. Failure to run out a simple ground ball or popup, forgetting how many outs there are, and stupid plays like this catcher made are quite frequent, considering the millions these guys are paid to stand around all night. (I agree about football though. I only watch highlights.)
