The WORST Sunday in NFL HISTORY: Week 7, 2021

No exaggeration. No hyperbole. Statistically speaking, week 7 of the 2021 NFL season might have been the worst Sunday in NFL history. With only one game decided by one possession (Falcons/Dolphins), and an average margin of victory across all games of 20 points, October 24, 2021, was a Sunday so dire that something like it hadn't happened since 1993, and had only happened once since the start of 1976. It was that bad. This is a breakdown of what happened, putting it into the appropriate historical context

The existence of that crazy PIT/MIN game in the 2009 week 7 slate automatically makes it better than this week; PIT only won that game by two scores because of a 70+ yard INT return within the two minute warning. It's the only game in NFL history with 3 TDs of over 70 yards in the fourth quarter I think.

We all love when a team has a minute and 2 timeouts to get a last second FG or TD to win the game, but simply looking at the number of one-score games doesn't tell the full story of how good a game really was. I've seen plenty of one-sided games where the winning team is playing prevent defense and running out the clock, then the losing team gets one or two garbage time TDs to make it an 8 point game with 15 seconds left, and fails an onside kick attempt where they'd still need a hail mary and a 2pt conversion to take the game to OT. Those aren't good games. If the Eagles had driven down the field and kicked a field goal with 15 seconds left to make it an 8 point game, so they could try an onside kick and a hail mary, it wouldn't have been a good game. Similarly, I've seen close games where a team needs a TD to win with 2-3 minutes left, then they fail to get the ball back and the leading team kicks a FG or scores a TD to make it a 2 possession game. Even though you see a final score like 28-19 (Lions @ Rams yesterday), 26-17 (Raiders @ Steelers in week 2) or 25-16 (Colts @ Titans in week 3), none of these were bad games. In defense of 2021 week 7: Although there was only one 1 possession game, I think there were 4 good games yesterday. Bengals @ Ravens - Bengals won 41-17, but the first half was really fun to watch, and until Mixon's touchdown to make it 34-17, it still felt like "Maybe if the Ravens hold the Bengals to a field goal, they can make a comeback like they did against the Colts 2 weeks ago". It wasn't close at the end, but for three quarters, this was a good game. Also, seeing Joe Burrow and Ja'Marr Chase carve up the Baltimore defense gives fans something to look forward to for the next 3-4 years while the Bengals have them both on rookie contracts. This is going to be the most exciting division in football this year, with at least 3 teams that are going to be relevant in January. The Bengals' Super Bowl window is open. Lions @ Rams - Rams won 28-19, but that wasn't over until Goff threw a pick and the Rams kicked a field goal to make it a 2 possession game with a minute left. You had Goff and Stafford playing each other for the first time since the trade, Dan Campbell pulling out all the trick plays to try and get his first win as a head coach, and the Rams nearly losing a game that they needed to win to keep up with Arizona in the division. For me, this was the best game of the week, despite not being a one possession game. (I'm still pissed that Sky Sports, who pick which game to show here in the UK, chose to show Bears @ Bucs instead of this) Falcons @ Dolphins - Falcons won 30-28. A good game, even though it doesn't matter for the playoffs. Colts @ 49ers - Colts won 30-18. It was sloppy, but it was still close enough to be enjoyable until the Colts scored with 3 minutes left. It wasn't a meaningless game either, as both teams needed to win to remain relevant in the playoff picture. And a bonus: Chiefs @ Titans - Titans won 27-3. Without the context of the Chiefs being pre-season favourites for the Super Bowl, and the Titans being the team that can't get it done when it matters in the playoffs, it was a bad game. But even though it was a blowout, the Titans getting such a dominant win over Mahomes' Chiefs is something that we'll be talking about for the rest of the season. A 'bad game' can still produce an interesting result, and generate exciting storylines later in the season. Can the Chiefs rescue their season? Are the Titans a Super Bowl contender? I want to watch both those teams and find out. Was it a below average week in the NFL? Absolutely. Was it the worst of all time? Far from it IMO. Week 1 of 2017 had no teams on a bye, and although there were 3 one-score games that Sunday, only one of those games had the trailing team possessing the ball with a chance to win the game. None of the two score games were ever close, either. Sunday Night Football was a 19-3 snoozefest featuring the Cowboys and Giants, which got picked ahead of Seahawks @ Packers (and Russell Wilson vs Aaron Rodgers) because it's the NFC East. At least SNF was close until late in the 4th quarter this week. The icing on the cake is the biggest storylines from the first NFL Sunday of 2017 - "How bad are the Colts without Andrew Luck?", and "Look at all the teams who suck because they didn't sign Kaepernick". Kareem Hunt's debut on Thursday night was the only positive thing that people were talking about, and we all know what happened with him the following year.

Context? What's that?! And yes, a seemingly otherwise blowout game can still be a great game. The Bengals/Ravens was tight until some SPECTACULAR play by the Bengals that I feel is going to be the springboard for the Joe Burrow-Ja'marr Chase duo as The Next Big Thing. Lions/Ravens was tight until the end. Titans/Chiefs is going to be a reference point come January for when we started taking the Titans as a serious threat in the AFC.

Not to mention my Pittsburgh Penguins curbstomped the Maple Laughs 7-1 without half the lineup and my Fighting Irish took care of the directional California school. (And before anyone asks, I live equal distance from Pittsburgh and Cincinnati, so odd fandom mashups are common where I live. Reds and Steelers are probably the most common.)

Week 8 was worse Way worse..... the coaching, lack of adjustments , the TO’s, then the Rams allowing 22 pts to Houston after leading 38-0. Point spread 16 1/2. Coincidence?

That 1970 final week of the season was when the NY Giants lost to the LA Rams 31-3 at Yankee Stadium to get knocked out of the playoffs. SF 49ers clobbered the Oakland Raiders 38-7 to eliminate the Rams. As you said, avoiding a coin flip in the NFC East and West. Gotta love those lopsided scores!

This is why I subscribe to this site for great information like this and I thought it was just me who thought last Sunday was bad as it was so boring. I finished my job's open health enrollment Sunday afternoon because the games were so boring and lopsided but I had no idea that this was one of the worst Sunday's ever in the NFL. 2021 has been a exciting season the best in years with closegaes and exciting new stars but the longer season will lead to more injuries and games like MNF last night which would have been more exciting had both QB 's Jameis Winston and Geno Smith had spiked the ball on every play. The AFC East South and NFC East and North are just about decided now and as they rest their players as they clinch division titles with the combo of a lot of bad teams it looks like their could be a lot of bad NFL games ahead.

I was at Lions-Rams, and that was an unexpectedly interesting game. To my knowledge, the worst Sunday was Week 14 in 1969. Four of the eight games were close, but all were utterly meaningless, because the four division titles had all been clinched, and home field was based on predetermined formulas rather than W-L record. There was one AFL playoff game, but it was the most lopsided in league history, as the Oakland Raiders annihilated the Houston Oilers, 56-7.

Dolphins took a page from the Falcon playbook. That would be how to leave too much time on the clock at the end of the game and play really soft defense. It's a can't miss recipe for losing.

Irony of the Colts week 1 win in 1970 was that they won on a last ditch FG by Jim O'Brien-and their season ended in similar fashion in Super Bowl V with an O'Brien FG breaking a 13-13 tie with 5 seconds left.

The Wash-StL game wasn't entirely meaningless. The Cards could have won the NFC East with a win and losses by Dallas and New York as the Cards would have been at 9-4-1 and NYG/Dall at 9-5. A Giants win and Dallas/Detroit losses would have gotten the Cards in as a WC as both Det/Dall would have been 9-5.

From a competitive standpoint you are probably right. From a quality of play standpoint, Week 4 in 1987, the first of the three weeks with replacement players, is the winner. Not only did you have mostly sub-par players hastily assembled, you also had stuff like Buddy Ryan basically checking out because he didn't want to coach replacement players, and a few other coaches who didn't speak out like Ryan, but weren't trying very hard.

You are incorrect in saying that before 1970 we only got one game on one network. The NFL was on CBS, the AFL was on NBC, and they frequently had double-headers on the same day precisely because there hadn't been a merger--both networks wanted to get their product out as much as possible. I recall watching late games on both networks, with the Sperry-Rand commercial on the NBC broadcast sticking out for some reason...

The problem the NFL has is that it has a game on Thursday, a game on Monday and when you have 6 teams on the bye you limit yourself. You better get juicy matchups…and this week offered very few. I can think of a few possible reasons for the Week 7 coincidence. It’s a time during the season where injuries start to pile up, certain coaches start to reveal themselves to be in over their head (LOL @ my guy Vic Fangio), and the excitement and optimism that all teams carry into a new season starts to wane for some. No definite reasons, just some factors that may contribute.

That Chicago/Tampa Bay game was cross-flexed to CBS before the season began. To balance things out, you'll also see some all-AFC matchups on FOX every now and then. CBS will also carry some of those extra interconference games that are "free agents" due to them not being part of the current TV deals. With all those games being hosted by AFC teams in 2021, there was no way FOX was gonna be able to handle all of those on its own. CBS airing games with an NFC team being the visitor and FOX airing games with an AFC team being the visitor will become more common from 2023 on, so get used to it.

A 2014 Bengals/Browns game was on Fox. It just so happened to be the first career start for Johnny Manziel. Fox scrambled to make it their main early game. Which was a waste, because the Bengals avenged their embarrassing primetime loss against the Browns earlier that season by a score of 30-0.
