The worst places in the world for Highly Sensitive People

Visit the blog: www.highlysensitiveperson.net
Overstimulation. Noise, chaos, bright lights, smells, crowds. These are the highly sensitive person's kryptonite.
This episode is a brainstormed list of what I think are the worst places on earth for Highly Sensitive Persons.
(This episode is a little different than most-it isn’t advice, or a serious topic. It is sort of tongue-in-cheek, a little sarcastic, and even a bit silly. It’s more about pondering all the things that set off HSPs and then thinking which places have a lot of those things. So, disclaimer: don’t take this too seriously. Not everyone will agree with this list.)

As an HSP I have realized that I tend to be sensitive to aspects of society that are unnatural and unhealthy. I believe HSPs can sense toxicity in an environment much sooner than non HSPs, if they ever realize their environment is toxic at all. Light pollution, noise pollution over crowded spaces, confined work environments, huge grocery stores with tons of processed food, advertising everywhere from billboards to TV commercials to huge amount of spam in your email in box, your cellphone going off like a pinball machine with alerts and notices, etc. Ask me when I was happiest and most at peace it has always been living a simple life close to nature without the constant bombardment of technology and consumerism. This is why this year I decided to move to a small coastal town and enjoy a simple more natural life. I recommend HSP take a one week camping trip and rough it a bit in nature. Get back in touch with the planet because the Earth is truly our mother and live giver.

Eliah Holiday Inspiring to hear you made the move Eliah, thank you. Looking back now as a HSP, I have ONLY thrived(high energy, creativity, laughter, adventures..) when I lived by small towns and stunning nature all around. Your move inspires me as I just have to leave the city now - I literally swell up physically after a day in the city! I lose Self-connection, ending up confused and off balance. I know people who Thrive and are energized in the city, so how liberating and self respecting to just do what works for us all individually! Love and light

I can't believe you mentioned MACY'S. I am a native NYorker and have avoided Macy's since childhood. Just going into the first fl. would trigger a massive migraine. I felt attacked by those fragrances, the poor salespersons' plight, the really high ceilings and the overbearing lights, music and screaming babies. Just writing this is killing me. Thank you for the podcast.

This HSP used to live in NYC and work in the midtown area and used to shop at Macys! Oh, the long long lines to pay for something on my lunch hour! LOL.....now that I'm pushing 70 I love to shop online! The way to go for HSPs....NO crowds, long lines, bright lights or noise! Ah, the luxury of shopping at home and thankfully for Amazon! Don't miss shopping at malls and don't miss those subways and/or commuting! Peace, love and namaste~

Hey friends !! I am a HSPE and I must say that I love crowded places because people give me energy. However I see someone sad or rudness around me - I lose my energy and feel very upset. I always want to go to this person and give them a compliment so they might feel happier. So I try to go next to the person and give them a compliment and suddenly they give me a smile and I feel they are so happy. You should try it. It will make you happy - because we know how much we love to see people happy.

I am gonna stick my neck out here. It's taboo to say it out loud, even though I know I'm not the only one. I can't stand noisy children. I can tolerate some noise of playing kids, but not creaking, whining, shrilling, screaming. I'll have increased heart rate, sweat, a strong sense of panic. Only one is enough to make me feel like (not doing it!!) either kill or flee, fight myself out of the place. Could be a store, bus or someone' home. And, as I said, this is taboo, of course everybody love kids! Or rather is supposed to. 😳🙄😔😢

@@susie5254 Hahaha! Thank you for not shooting missiles at me! You might be right, there are A FEW kids that have touched my heart during the years. When they reach around 6-7 they are quite alright. I don't know, but I think it's somehow a twisted response to an overreacting "take care of" mechanism. "Screaming child, it's in danger!" contra the fact, it is not. So I literally panic, and take out my emotional reactions on the direct cause, the sounds. Unfortunately knowledge about that isn't enough to make me feel different. Same sort of automatic reaction, as to spiders and snakes. It's horrible to say, I know, BUT I don't COMPARE children to spiders and snakes, just what happens inside me. The difference is, I'm entitled to scream if I meet a snake in my yard, but not if I meet a crying child (obviously 🤣!). If the child is alone, I overcome the stress I feel and try to comfort and help (I'm not a monster). The snake.. If possible I try to get it out of there, otherwise I try to call the janitor (I live in an apartment). If I can do something about the situation, in control, if you like, it's easier, but not when I can't. I have a son, who of some reason was one of those almost always happy kids, who nearly never screamed or "misbehaved". It always worked to talk, he didn't block out when he was spoken to, like many children do. Whether he understood what he was told or not, he calmed down, in trust and comfort or in acceptance, depending on situation. I don't take the credit, the opposite, nature blessed me with him. (God knows I could be a terror of strong will as a child, and teens. So he didn't get that from me. Neither his father was 100% an angelical child.) We were blessed, as simple as that. However, he grew up to a strong and strong-willed man, and one of the wisest human beings I ever met. I'm so proud of him! I'm NOT saying that I was the perfect mother, I made the mistake to lose my temper, who says they never done that is a lier. The immediate punishment to oneself is a worsening situation. We know that, but no one is perfect, and we are humans. Sometimes emotional reactions take over the intellectual knowledge. (Is that correct grammar? Sorry, mostly self-taught in English, thereof some mistakes. 🫣) I did MY best, like everyone else. I was lucky to have a "good" child, naturally positive and easy. Maybe there is a God who placed him with us, and gave more difficult babies to more suitable parents?😂 Nevertheless, it's like "My child♥️, other people's gremlins 🤬." I don't have any grandchildren yet, but I have a strong feeling they will be"my babies ♥️ too 😅. But I still have this weird feeling of "take-that-bastard-away-from-here" 👿 panic and anger when I hear that whining, screaming and crying. Lack of control? Could be that. Ps. "Lose temper" is NOT equal to beat. It's showing ANGER, raised voice, threatening body language. NOT faking to hit. I mean how one moves, facial looks etc. Just an angry face can be bad enough to escalate the situation.

This is why I live out in the country and I’m in nature. I can wear my comfy clothes, enjoying a cup of coffee while watching the sunrise. As a child, my mother said, it never failed when I came home from a busy vacation or visiting friends, I would get sick. I had pushed myself past a healthy point. Now, I like to vacation places that have more solitude and I can go at a relaxed pace but my favorite place is home.

I remember this sports bar that I went to with my grandmother. They used to have the most wonderful pulled pork paninis and fries. I preferred to get lunch though, because dinner hour was horrendous. It was a small place and would get packed with people watching whatever games were on the TV. Then they would have music blaring. I sat there with my family with my hands over my ears and it was still too loud. Keeping my ears plugged made it just bearable.

I am an extroverted HSP. As such some things on this list are fun and exciting for me. I have been able to enjoy clubs though in moderation and it depends on who is with me. Do not like busy department stores or malls much at all. Walmart is a nightmare at times. Love grocery shopping Love certain concerts Big dislike of fairgrounds, very unsettling actually. Dislike of amusement parks, though I have had some fun times in them though its rare. Biggest current dislike is travelling on a city bus. Extreme dislike being around people on cellphones. I don't have one. I hate them. Some of these experience change depending on the company, a fair ground is the worst to be with someone I know or like because I am being open to them and then all this other static comes in. I cannot do both at the same time. I can probably do a fairground alone because I am only noticing my experience and not the other. Likely though I would not go to a fairground because the are usually too commercial for me.

Oddly, I have no issue with Macy’s because (with my Virgo mind), it is organized by floor so I can go straight to the floor I want and it’s not overwhelming. Granted, I cannot stay on the floor too long, but I actually don’t mind it. I have, however, said this about Sephora. It’s just too much of the same thing with no clear organization (separated by brand-mostly, I think) and I simply hate walking in there. Oy vey!

Im not a big fan of parties casinos or Macy’s, but Im addicted to lifting heavy weights with as much noise as you can imagine, and I also love blacksmithing, which is filled with glowing iron and loud, sparking hammer strikes all around. I also love acting and performing on stage or in front of a camera, which many HSPs seem to have extreme anxiety over. Think that this could do with my being an extrovert?
