The Worst Pets for Kids

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Common pets that are often thought of as easy but actually take a lot of knowledge and education. This is a response to the questions in the comments from The Best Pets for Kids video. These are animals that can make good pets for some people but not the first ones I would recommend for a kid.

    My friend has a goldfish living in a bowl with tap water. I've try telling her hundreds of times that it needs at least a 20 gallon with filter,water conditioner, etc... She says "oh it's fine he's survived 2 years already he wouldn't of lived 2 years if he wasn't healthy" I think it's animal abuse. Some people would say "it's just a fish" but it is a life and they should at least have BASIC care.😢

    I’m a 26 year old equestrian, and I train horses for a living. I have seen so many parents get their young greenies a pony, and almost all of the time I have seen the pony or horse be not taken proper care of. Basic things like floating teeth ect are almost always looked over. Then the child grows out of riding, and the horse is sold on. It’s awful. When I was a riding instructor part time, I would always tell the parents to wait six years and see if they grow out of it. Many kids stop riding after their first fall, or the parents take them out of riding because the child was injured, and the parent blames the horse.

    I agree with her on horses. I’ve only had my horse for 3 of the 7 years I’ve been riding. It can get very difficult at times. I ride 4 times a week during the school year and at least 5 times a week during the summer. Also the horse and its supplies are expensive. Now I’m saving money to get a chinchilla and I’m doing my research.

    My personal experience with fish as a child: They kept dying for no reason. My parents assumed I killed them and stopped getting them for me, only to discover that the walmart tanks they were from were overrun my fungal, bacterial and environmental infections and that none of the 6 fish were my fault. When I was 16, my parents got me a goldfish that lives in a plastic mesh-covered pool in my room. I have had "Eleven" for several years and he has grown so much! He has plants, two very long through/through caves since he's gotten so long. I named him eleven because he has two stripes that look like the number 11 on his back and is white everywhere else. I keep the water clean and fresh with a couple tank filters as well as freshwater clams and cleaner fish. I keep Eleven's "pond" covered with mesh because he likes to jump out of the water like to go after my rabbit. Not sure why. He has eight bubble stones to keep the water oxygenated and his substrate is a mixture I got from a goldfish and Koi breeder my friend works for. I haven't actually had Eleven sexed, but I am assuming male for now. Eleven is almost four inches long due to his nice, big habitat. I do a full clean every couple months, as the pond stays fairly clean by itself thanks to the feeder and cleaner creatures inside. :)

  • @HappyTailsAnimals

    @HappyTailsAnimals

    7 жыл бұрын

    That's one of the reasons I wish Walmart would stop selling fish. Their methods are inhumane. Have you thought about getting 11 a friend? Goldfish are very social.

  • @ashleighwrighton9227

    @ashleighwrighton9227

    7 жыл бұрын

    Eleven actually doesn't seem to want to share his pond! He killed the last two I tried to put in and they were about the same size as him. One was sexed as female and the other male. I think he prefers my cat, really. Boo Monster sleeps on the mesh and Eleven will chill under her. Any ideas on why he doesn't seem to like other fish? I've stopped trying to put new ones in for now because eleven kills them or constantly fights. He hurts himself if I put a divider in to try and separate the fish for slow introductions by ramming against the divider. He knows the fish is there even if he can't see them and it scares me!

  • @HappyTailsAnimals

    @HappyTailsAnimals

    7 жыл бұрын

    Usually it would be because the fish are different sizes, different species, or the tank is too small/ not enough food. If you can rule all that out then yeah I agree sounds like he wants to be alone. Seems like he is quite the exception :D

  • @ashleighwrighton9227

    @ashleighwrighton9227

    7 жыл бұрын

    His "pond" is like the big plastic pools at walmart, it takes up most of my room as well. He's only 4 inches the last time I checked a couple months ago. I do believe they are the same species and I was feeding two extra servings plus a little when I ate dinner, so there should definitely have been enough food, plus some for the feeder fish when it floated down. I think he just wants Boo Monster around instead of another fish. Boo even lets him nibble her tail and toes! Must just be an unusual pair. :)

  • @HappyTailsAnimals

    @HappyTailsAnimals

    7 жыл бұрын

    That is very unusual! But animals in captivity do form very interesting relationships lol. That is a very large space you are providing for him, that's so awesome! In such cases as this I would keep the animal alone. I can tell you are providing everything he needs.

But it makes me happy knowing that I saved them from dying painful deaths. I have 4, Platinum, my bronze-light cream gold-rose gold veiltail dumbo finned male, Blue, my Royal blue Crowntail, Onyx, my dark black metallic green-blue male and Huntress my tiny koi female. I love them all. They all came from Petcos and a Walmart because I couldn't stand seeing them in there, half of Platinum's fins were sheared off, it was horrible. I got them all over the course of five months.

    I'm so happy that you brought up fish. I bought a Beta fish with a 2.5 gallon tank that was labelled as a "Beta Starter Kit". It said to keep the fish in room temperature water and came with basic fish flakes. The Beta really wasn't moving very much in his tank, so I decided to do some research and realized how horrible those conditions are. I later ended up spending about $400 overall on just the basics for his larger tank, heater, test strips, silk flowers, water conditioner, filter, special food etc... Don't do what I did. Do some research before getting a fish and find out if you can even afford to humanely house one.

    +Princess Pickles I've got 8 chinnys, someone gave me a lone 'male' or so I thought, searched through ads for a friend for 'him', introduced them and they got on well, they did hump each other but I thought that was dominance, 4 months later my chico had 4 babies, I separated them quickly and Wiley (male/dad) got depressed being on his own, I decided to keep the babies and wait till they were 8 weeks old to move the twin boys in with dad (one baby died at 2 days old, she was a runt of the litter and just never got strong). 4 months later chico had 3 more babies (all girls) didn't realise that they could get pregnant whilst still carrying the unborn babies, I could never sell or get rid of them so now I have 3 boys (daddy Wiley & twin boys Nooky & Nibbles in together) and Chico with her 4 daughters Niko, Charlie, Chunk and Chucky.

  • @MaggieRocksYSocks

    @MaggieRocksYSocks

    7 жыл бұрын

    Sarah Wilky Most affordable would be small animals such as hamsters, mice, gerbils, and guinea pics cost a bit more up front and need a bigger cage, but are still a very cheap pet.

    Maggie Poynter I have always wanted a small pet but I have two cats so do you have any advice or is reptiles ok

  • @MaggieRocksYSocks

    @MaggieRocksYSocks

    7 жыл бұрын

    Sarah Wilky your cats are just as likely to want to get to a small reptile than with a small animal. In order to be able to provide optimum care for a reptile, it would not be cheap. They need a tank with plenty of space, they need basking lights and heating lights and some need Uvb lights, most need some live food, you need substrate, thermometer and humidity gauges , and decor. Not to mention the cost of the reptile itself. (depending on what you get of course). For example, buying a hamster and its supplies could cost anywhere from $50 to $80 up front. For most reptiles, it would cost anywhere from $150 to $400 up front. Expensive. On top of that, not many reptiles like being handled so you'd spend all that money on an animal that doesn't want to be touched.

  • @MaggieRocksYSocks

    @MaggieRocksYSocks

    7 жыл бұрын

    Sarah Wilky If you absolutely wanted a reptile though, I would recommend probably a leopard gecko. It doesn't need as big of a tank as some other reptiles and doesn't get too big, it may let you handle it, but depending on its personality it might not. My personal favorite is a bearded dragon, they are social and can be handled BUT more expensive and get pretty big.

    I totally agree ! Especially for goldfish .. people tend to think it's also a cheap pet to own ... But it is not. Having the proper equipment for your goldfish tank is costy (tanks of over 40 gal, plus filter, etc.) and while maintaining can be cheap, it's also very tricky if you don't know what you're doing, as you mentioned.

    I begged for a pig when I was a kid. My parents finally relented and got me a Vietnamese Potbelly. However, unlike most parents, mine stayed on me about care and feeding. It was a pretty daunting task to raise her but it was a good experience. The key is that my parents stayed involved. Most pets that are given to kids end up with a bad life, purely due to their parents writing them off as "the kids' responsibility." That's incredibly irresponsible. As an adult, if you bring an animal into your home it's ultimately _your_ responsibility.

    I'd say hamsters are pretty bad for kids under 8, they cost about $100-$200 from the start, they are delicate and if got from a pet store could be pregnant if female. They aren't good for kids I've had hamsters since I was 6 which was awful and I could care for them correct and I regret it so much

    I feel like if you get a bin cage, and have all the things you need for hamsters (including toys and hides) it really shouldn't cost so much. I spent $120 on my Guinea pig, and he's spoiled rotten and very healthy. Guinea pigs are bigger and need more care. So hamsters aren't that expensive.

    I disagree with corn snakes being difficult to hold, maybe a baby sitting on the floor would loose it but you really just need to hand walk, it’s not hard. Very young children shouldn’t handle animals anyways, so really corn snakes do make good pets for kids with their cost, ease of care, and gentle nature. Having a corn could change your mind about snakes, and I really encourage beginners to have snakes.

    I have been keeping parakeets since I was 10 and fish since I was nine. I'm 13 and I did lots of research. My parakeets are tamed and love my attention. They make some mess but I clean their cage every other day and put fresh food and water in their cage every morning. I buy many toys for them to keep them entertained and I know all the care they need. At least once a day I open their cage door and keep it up incase they wanna come in or go out and roam around a bird proof room. Sometimes I call them and they go on my finger and I pet them. They get to play for at least an hour a day and while they do I usually give them safe vegetables for them to eat so we can bond and sometimes fruits. As for my fish I keep them in a 60 gallon tank with a filter and a heater. I have a calico fantail, 3 standard goldfish, and two plecos. They are very happy and I do research and care on them too. I do a 10% water change every week and I have other tanks and filters in case they get sick. I even have tons of plants and hiding places and make my own gel fish food. But here's the thing my family hates having animals in the house they don't understand that I would like to have a pet I could cuddles with. The only other pet I had in the house was a hamster which I also did tons of research on before I pet sitted for my cousin that had to go on vacation. I know all the research on most pets tortoises, chinchillas, hamsters (all species), fish, snails, most birds, rabbits, cats, dogs, turtles, other marine animals, rats, mice, ferrets, lizards, hermit crabs, and many more. Money is not a problem my dad explained but he isn't home most of the time and I don't understand why I can't have guinea pigs or any other animal I want. My birds are from my sister who was taking care of them poorly and didn't want them and my fish are from a friend who couldn't move with them. I really want one more pet but my dad hates them 😭 I keep my room clean and everything. Nobody is involved in my pets or how I care for them I had to do it all by myself. My parents don't give me much attention and my mom is really sick. My friends don't like me and I feel lonely that is why I need a pet. I gave up trying to convince my parents they will never understand how I'm feeling. When I started getting sick they passed it off. after two years with help from my dads friend they finally took me two the doctor and they discovered I had celiac disease and he blamed it for me eating to much ice cream I rarely have it, maybe once every two weeks. Nobody understands me that is why I need a pet, because it will love me more then my parents or friends. I was put in foster care last year but got taken back because my dad lied to the government. Please if your child wants a pet and shows responsibility and has asked for months please put what you think aside and get involved and help your child care for the pet it doesn't necessarily have to be a pet they want, but something that is easy to care for. If money or something is a problem explain why they can't get a pet. For the kids reading this your parents may think your too young but ask them why you can't. I'm not saying that the girl explaining is wrong but some kids like me are mature and know what the pet needs. I have never asked my parents for a chinchilla as it is too expensive but please listen to your child. Hope all goes well and hopefully you can get a pet that is happy and healthy and right for you! ☺️

    This video is so accurate. Even some of the pets she showed in her "the best pets for kids" video are way harder to take care of then people think. Like Guinea Pigs need a good it of space to run around in which mean the store bought cages aren"t nearly enough space. Also Bunnies need lots of room to run around and stretch their legs. I'm 16 and i have a dog, 2 cats, a chinchilla (his cage is 2x3x5), a guinea pig(his cage is 2x4) and a rabbit( his hutch is 2x4 but he is free roam in my room)

But the rest of the animals are living there best lives and are totally SPOILED!

    Ok so I am a. Kid but I have to agree with you. Just judging by the thumbnail I don't think a lot of kids and sometimes an adult could take on a pet with a lot of responsibility. It requires full commitment and dedication, responsibility, and attention from their owners it's like taking care of a baby. Also pets come with pros and cons . It's hard to find the right pet for you but sometimes the animals have to pay the price because their owners are miseducated and think it is really easy but the truth is there is no easy pet , every pet comes with a cost and responsibility.but animals can bring joy into you life and have a lot of pros. I'm not trying to discriminate anyone who has a pet but all I am trying to say is that please find the right source of education on these animals and make sure you are considering the cost and commitment and etc. , But if you think you are ready to take on something like that go ahead. And if you decide you are responsible enough , you won't regret it , pets can bring you so much joy and. They will bring a smile to your face . But if you are reading this please if you are going to get an exotic pet please start off with the ideal beginner breed thank you for reading this
