The first issue is adhesion you have to scuff the surface with 600g scotch brite before painting and you really need a primer sealer at least. No matter what a year from now everything you coated in white will be corroded. I’ve been in body shops for 14 years and fixed dozens of home gamer style cut corner jobs like this. Just like me you gotta learn the hard way sometimes.

  • @joshuacstorlie

@@joshuacstorlie an etch primer would help with adhesion yeah but not corrosion protection if you put a single stage paint on top of it moisture will still permeate the coatings. opening the pores of the metal by scuffing and applying a sealer which is a non permeable barrier, is the best way to stop corrosion. Second best way is by applying 3 coats of a cavity wax material.

hey, speaking of insulation and condensation, I'm assuming you're planning on using this vehicle in a cold environment. It seems like there might be an issue with warm moist interior air making it through your interior paneling and insulation to the cold exterior metal where it will condensate and later mold/mildew I don't have an expert opinion, I just wanted to make sure you had that scenario in mind in your interior plan. :)

Painting it black has made it into a huge oven on wheels, black absorbs heat. That is why most campers and motorhomes have white roofs and are lighter in shades. The lighter the color the more the sun is deflected and thus less heat absorbed.

You guys do great work. There are a couple of comments you should really heed. It is without question, if you do not want issues later, that proper sanding and proper cleaning of the bare metal is essential before laying down the primer coat. Secondly, you should use the primers made for metal covering as they are chemically developed so that they react to form a bond with the metal assuring a reliable barrier and gives you peace of mind there will be no rust issues since the entire area is hidden. But then again if your just going to sell it, good to I guess. Once again enjoy watching you building your pcs of art.

IMO, orange side lights would be over the rear wheel well, at the top of the rear passenger door, then the side mirrors and then on the side of the front bumper. May be too many, but you'll be very visible, especially on those dark sections on the highway.

  • @BrianW2979

As a semi truck driver I know how important it is to have marker lights on the side that are linked to your turn signals. Because you are so long, if someone is beside you they won't see your front or rear signals if your trying to change lanes, so they may not let you merge. I would put them in the front bottom corner of the panel that is above your table slide outs. I would also put a set of roof lights on the front panel of the camper above the windows. They will be way more visible there than the angled ones at the very top that you installed.

I would suggest adding a leveling system for when parked and throw in an over cab roof area vertical slider that raises a skylight that can be vented (maybe soft sides) with panorama ceiling curtain like the new glass roof cars. More head room in the bed and ventilation, that trucks going to be an oven in black that eats power so venting the high point will help you cool it. Move the solar panels on the roof further back

Chris also before you do the interior walls you need to think about exterior lighting connected to the house battery to illumine the outside of the camper when parked or camping. It would be so much easier to do the wiring and installation now then after.

The amber marker lights on the front corner help a lot with on coming traffic. If you look on the factory bed that you guys took off the lights are facing at a 45 degree angle front and back from the tire. They are meant to be that way so that they are pointed at the on coming driver.

Before interior panelling starts to go in, have you thought about a rear view camera system? Great work by the way👍🏻

this paint problem has happened to me too. what a nightmare. I learned that tou should self etch prime with solvent based paint fist, then use the water based paint in sections leaving it to dry. Indeed the humidity caused by the paint will thin the wet paint in enclosed spaces. it sucks, but without failure we cannot learn. 😊

Wow what a comeback fr. In aerospace we protect plexiglass used on the plane with a thin coat of wax. I like the idea of being seen from the front just for the sake of making sure people know how wide you are at night. Fun thought for the OEM roof lights: rewire them to an aux switch and replace the lights with some super bright pod lights or even the rectangular ones. It is meant for exploring so why not 😅

Get the running board lights that add turn signals. Less holes in the body means there's less chance of leaks.

I think you're right about the paint because I used the same type of paint on the bottom of my Ranger to stop it from rusting, and it dried just fine with an occasional drip.

I hope you are able to fix the Raptor Liner paint contamination. In my experience, the stuff is unremovable and unreparable if it ever gets discolored, gouged in the rocks or you ever have to fix body damage. I know it goes on easy compaired to paint, but I've never understood the appeal. That said, my preference isn't worth a cent on someone else's rig. I love your builds and learn a lot from your channel. Thanks for keeping it real!

I have used black sealer primer on bedliner before. In Arizona, the sun would cook that stuff grey in a few years. Simple topcoat with the sealer, good to go for a few more years.

I would put the marker lights in the center Seam going down the side of the truck. That way, you could put one in the angle above the fuel cap. And down the side.

LOL I did this EXACT SAME THING! I know what your issue was. It was too cold when you painted. Anything under 60 degrees for something like that is going to setup right. I painted my exterior security door of my house in the winter. The metal felt cold but the house was warm. Well that cold air on the panel made the paint "sag". If you have a few little spots, they call those runs. When the entire wall seems to slide down it is a great indicator that temp was too low for the amount of paint that was applied. If that was sitting in the hot and hot as balls inside, you could do that same thing and get completely different results.

Honestly the same mistake was made on the inside that was made on the outside. Bare metal can be sanded with 180 grit, ETCHING PRIMER, then paint. I almost wish i could give Chris a crash course on this stuff so he could avoid these mistakes.

Try cleaning the paint trace line with metholated spirits (metho). Metho dissolves plastic (water based) paint. I use it for cleaning my painting ladder to remove paint spots after painting interior ceilings and walls.
