I'd say, practically, Hugo vs. Gouken would be a good candidate for this video. Despite Hugo's HP and damage, he has a big ol' hitbox. Gouken has two fireball heights that hit that hitbox, so you can chip Hugo out pretty easily, and if he gets in close all you need is to Shoryupalm or throw him and the Hadoken guessing game (Heads I win, tails I lose, and if it lands on its side...I win!) begins again.

I used to main hugo and when i would fight a Gouken it would be a nightmare. Just a rain of light and medium haduken spam. cant even walk forward. that sucked so bad.

Hugo vs Gouken, Blanka, Sim, Sagat and Honda is awful

Not the first to say this, but I'm shocked Hugo/ Gouken isn't here. Hugo has to navigate this rainstorm of fireballs, no jumping allowed, and when you finally do get in you better Oki his ass right into the grave because a single hit or throw sends you full screen again. Nightmare match-up honestly.

Lily has carried the torch from T. Hawk of having a horrible matchup vs Blanka it seems. I now play Manon and it's nice to even have a chance of beating my friend's Blanka

Fun video. SF4 was my favorite game in the series and I always figured the definitive worst matchup was AE Yun vs Dhalsim but it is interesting to hear about this super niche MU of two characters that didn't have as high of a pick rate. Hearing about SF4 in [current year] is always a blast. Thawk to me didn't seem like a full character til USF4 so it's interesting to hear from someone that played in all iterations

As a former Blanka player from Europe: You're goddamn right. I have played long sets against Phenix, which is undoubtfully the best Hawk player in Europe, and I gotta say, that MU was never a 8-2. Blanka still has a slight advantage against Hawk, but once the Hawk player realises he can react and punish, and that, as you said, patience is key, Blanka players are forced to play neutral game perfectly to overcome the match. Otherwise, stupid tricks and Blanka stuff won't carry you to victory. But, surprisingly enough, I enjoy playing with Phenix a lot, and learnt a lot from him. One of the best players I have ever had the pleasure to meet (even irl on DreamHack 2014 if I remember correctly).

yoo Phenixuwu, the insanely good Belgian T.Hawk on PC right? I experienced a similar story not with Blanka but Poison. I've never had any issue with the matchup, it's supposedly in her favor, right? ...until I played some long sets with the dude and I got bopped. Reminded me for the millionth time that the moment you face a character specialist you're gonna feel the urge to throw all tier lists into the trash tbh lmao. Pretty chill guy too, much respect 👏

T hawk on release seemed to have some polarizing matchups similar to what Hugo had in Ultra. Just a little bit less time to round out a character and see how they interact with the cast can result in some very lopsided matchups. Usually DLC have the problem more than other characters. something i loved about Ultra was the edition select, so you could see how characters did compare to their earlier iterations.

Very well made video deserves more views. I would love to see a longer video going through each SF games most polarizing matchups. Interesting stuff!

as someone who only recently started to learn SF4 to prepare for 6 but always watched the game since AE this video was incredibly well made and covers some matchups I never even heard about like Yang/Blanka vs Hawk

good to know that even with so many new fighting games out you still made this very interesting video about sf4, this game totally deserves it.

I almost didn’t watch this video due to the semi-clickbaitey sounding title but ngl I def see why you went for it after watching this. The analysis is nuanced and really well done, huge props! Blanka is a character I struggle against personally and while I’m not a T. Hawk player this video definitely gives food for thought

If we're counting version select then Vanilla SF4 Sagat vs USF4 Hugo. It's at least a 9-1 matchup in favor of Sagat. Back in the days when version select just came out there was always a lot of talk about what the most interesting matchups would be across versions and one matchup I always saw very frequently discussed was Vanilla Sagat vs Ultra Hugo. Try it out if you haven't before, it sure is something.

Great video, man! I still say that the magic that sf4 delivered was never matched by sf5. I didn’t play sf5 because it never delivered that sf4 feel. This time round I’m going to play a new street fighter and give sf6 a dedicated go. Sometimes you can’t recapture lightning, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try to recreate it!

Condor Spire's old input is a holdover from Alpha 3, where it was a completely different move. Instead of a horizontal Condor Dive, Hawk would jump forward and do a downwards chop with both hands. They actually gave him this move back in Omega Mode IIRC.

Fellow Hawk player here. Something not talked about enough either is that all of the grapplers in the game have amazing sweeps in Blanka matchups. T Hawk’s especially is great since it’s much faster. I’ve beaten dozens of Blankas by draining their meter and then getting one hard knockdown, then sweeping them to oblivion since none of Blanka’s normal moves are invincible on startup. Meter for Blanka is CRUCIAL against a good grappler, even more so against Hawk since getting a knockdown on Blanka with the sweep at your disposal will permanently change the game, and making them scared of the wakeup options unless they have meter gives you the chance to start going at them again. Hawk also has a very interesting safe distance from Blanka after a heavy command grab. Do the grab, then IMMEDIATELY dash forward twice. That’s where Hawk can do literally anything far enough away from Blanka that it’s safe unless they have meter. He does a better job of staying back than Blanka does since if he gets the knockdown, it goes downhill once the other pressure is applied.

That was my first thought when I saw the title of this video, ngl.

Hugo against Gouken, Juri or Sagat if they decide to play as patient as possible and lame you out was brutal. Gouken in particular being able to tag you with his angled fireball both in the air or on the ground if Hugo was standing about midscreen was just awful. Hugo could spend all match trying to get in but even if he did get in Gouken could reset the whole situation with Tatsu or Backthrow into Ex Rush Punch/Tatsu/Ultra 1. Hell even big braining with his counter meant the guessing game could go more horribly wrong for Hugo compared to other characters because the struggle to get back in on Gouken after was insane.

Elena from what I heard is a bad matchup for Fei Long.

Adon vs Chun-Li is almost impossible, we can put Blanks here too. Why? Because Chun-Li and Blanka are the shortest characters, Adon loses his access to special cancel because most of his moves are too high for them, which leaves him super unsafe and reliant on his bad normals.

Thawk was my favorite to play against as Yang. His qcb+Fierce was so active that hawks would always run into it with every move.

Yeah, the _Super_ match-up of T. Hawk vs. Blanka *sucked* for T. Hawk *and* was boring as hell given it felt like a jab fest of attrition as someone who partly played T. Hawk at the time and then switched to other characters like the also bad Hakan just out of annoyance. So I am glad to get confirmation finally that _Ultra_ T. Hawk eventually got tools to be less oppressed by Blanka's previously completely special moves. This even if T. Hawk only got them in the same version of the game that Elena, Demon Princess of Healing existed in and dominated almost every other character effortlessly. Even as someone who basically stopped with _Super SFIV_ for various reasons, I *still* felt bad for seeing how hilariously mauled Dhalsim got by Yun when _Arcade Edition_ came out, especially since initial drop Yun was even dumber than he still ended up. Gods I hate Yun. No idea why that character has always be so obnoxiously overpowered outside of _CvS2_ when Yang can be strong without being stupid for the most part. It's to the point where Dhalsim getting destroyed doesn't even feel like it stands out as much as it should just because Yun was allowed to get away with murder against most characters like Elena later also was.

Genuinely couldn't believe how few subs you have, this was a great video, I basically live off fighting games but I've never really been at a competitive level, it's really fun to see videos like this

I'm surprised that Hugo vs Gouken wasn't even mentioned here.

I'm going to have to say Hugo Vs Juri. Due to his huge hitbox, you could keep a solid offense of diagonal fireball in combination with her horizontal fireballs, negating walk and jump forward. Up close she could continue doing 50/50s of instant air medium punch into divekick or lows. Sure he could catch a high with an air grab, but missing that would mean she could punish him with a dive kick chaser or a regular punish. They changed her close standing medium kick to not have aerial frames, but be grab invincible on startup instead. Which means if he wanted to do some weird grab or airgrab situation, she could just press that button, and if she was storing a fireball, get a combo off of it, or be positive on block if you wanted to bait her EX pinwheel.

Great video! do you have any suggestions for hawk vs vega spamming wall dive and izuna-drop? it literally beats all options i could think off. you block you get grabbed, u block the claw left and right he is safe and spams the izuna drop again, you probably get one chance for ex dp but if u miss you eat an ultra lol

The only suggestion I have is to not get knocked down without meter lol. A good Vega is a nightmare for Hawk.

Focus attack to absorb the hit and dash cancel to punish the wall dive attack. If you do the focus attack too early to absorb the hit, you'll be standing still for too long and he'll able to grab you with the izuna drop (so make sure you're moving around a bit before focusing and make sure you focus right when Vega is around your head). Alternatively you can jump back instant LP whenever Vega gets close to you with a wall jump. Its less damaging and you lose space but its pretty consistent if you practice it.

@@tekkenaddict1 I just want to add that if the Vega is doing Izuna Drop meaty on your wakeup, focus will get grabbed every time. Without meter, medium uppercut is actually your best option to just get hit and get out of the loop because it's throw invul.

@@BLOOBLAYZER If Vega is getting you with a meaty izuna drop then you can't focus it but the idea would then be to mix up your wake up timings so he can't get it meaty. Vega's wall dive can't cover all your options regardless of he scores of a hard knockdown or not. If you change you wake up timing (tech vs no tech or delay get up vs regular wakeup) the Vega is forced to guess on which wake up you're going to do and adjust their timing. They might guess right once or twice and hit you get hit by an izuna drop but you are T Hawk so you have the highest health in the game to take some hits. If you mix up your wake up timings and the Vega guessed wrong on the timing, then he's meaty grab will either hit too late or too early and you'll be able to deal with the wall dive through focus again. MP DP is okay to fight against the Izuna drop but its a bit more risky cause the Vega cause start baiting the move out and punishing you further for trying to escape.

As a t hawk main, I can confirm some of his worst opponents: Blanka Gouken Guile And sometimes bison

Bloo Blayzer is a 3-7 matchup against his own mic'

Juri vs Zangief/Hugo. Spam and store fireballs galore, keep away and poke with HK, use MK for your go to Anti-air will beat any of their air buttons 100% worse scenario u trade and can backdash. If u see zangief building meter with spd u can full screen punish with her full screen dive kick. Back away and spam fireballs again.

How about Hugo vs Gouken or Hugo vs Sagat where Hugo couldn't crouch down High Tiger Shots in earlier versions.

Riceata and Cast's take were very important despite being such a small part of the video and not really factoring into your conclusion. Blanka players never really had to actually learn the matchup because Hawk players mostly didn't make the adjustments you are talking about(that are crucial for Hawk winning). It was a very low priority matchup for Blanka players to lab because they would win almost every time regardless. The thing is here there is a whole layer of Blanka adjusting back where he stops giving Hawk free damage, and uses different moves in neutral. Cast was mostly able to make that adjustment in a single set and still win, but what if Blanka's collectively did? I think you definitely found the path to win the match as some other Hawks did like Hungbee, but ultimately I think a lot of the conclusion about the matchup being not that bad is sort of tenuous because it shows that you had an extremely large matchup knowledge advantage over essentially every Blanka you would play.

I agree, I think I would perhaps think about the matchup differently than I do now if more Blanka players made adjustments like Cast. I don't think my opinion would change much though. If you look at a similar matchup (Honda) where nothing was changed to be punishable in neutral, it's still really bad. Being able to punish ball on block and on reaction is something you can't do with Honda's headbutt and it shows in how much harder it is to play. Like I said I do think it's Blanka'a favour still (6-4) but when I compare it to his other difficult matchups (Chun, Sagat, Gouken, Honda, Juri) it is not nearly as bad as those. Btw I remember playing you online back in the day haha my tag used to be Zfilz before I changed it.

​@@BLOOBLAYZER One of my big adjustments once HP ball was nerfed was to use HK upball in neutral. It's too fast to be properly reaction dpable, and it's still safe on block(generally, some weird hurtbox shifts or hitting standing hawk very high is unsafe). Hawk's proximity block crouching hurtbox is extremely tall, so it hits from very far ranges that are unexpected for a vertical oriented move. Plus it snipes condor spire and leads to a really nice safejump+fuzzy situation. This is something I really didn't see other Blankas doing which I saw as a big way to recapture some of that neutral advantage. There are some other adjustments to be made like using st.hk and slide defensively against buffed spire is BIG as it works even from cr.mk cancel. Blanka's low damage can somewhat be made up from the fact that he has T.Hawk specific combos. Doing those vs. say a cr.mk st.lp xx ball is a pretty large difference. I think you can mostly get the matchup advantages all back to make it worse than 6-4. Blanka players autopiloting in a lot of matches tended to give up a lot of advantages for no particular reason. I remember playing you too, I didn't really travel much so a shame we didn't get to play offline. I think showing the Blanka tech side of the matchup in person might have changed your opinion a bit.

@@Veserius the hk upball was something Cast did to me quite a bit when we played and was definitely a factor in him winning the set. It allows you to then mix in more of regular blanka balls if hawk tries to focus it and then you can start dealing big burst/mental damage in neutral for sure. I would have loved to have played you offline. I like to think I would have been able to adjust to those strategies, but it's hard to tell when just talking about it. I love hearing your side and the changes you made to adjust after ultra. Who knows maybe we will be at an event in the future and there will be a setup there. Regardless we'll have to run some sets in SF6 :)

I think it really changes the dynamic of neutral and makes Hawk have to increase his mental stack past "lp dp or u2 every ball and watch out for jumps" which is important, and because of having to worry about HK upball spacing, it means you can manipulate Hawk's screen positioning better. And yeah it's easy to think about matchups a lot from the perspective of "i am doing the thing that I am supposed to do to win, and am no winning so I solved it". Sometimes matchups get really complicated, and an entire pool of players playing the character might not know how to approach it that well, which was extremely true for Blanka players. I've been able to find a lot of narrow edges in this game and others that I don't see others doing. and Lily time for SF6?

As the meta between characters evolve the matchups change in such interesting ways at a high level and each individual playing sees the game a little differently and may approach that change differently, evolving the matchup further. I love it haha :) You know it! I'm glad Hawk is back. (in spirit! Lol) Friday can't come soon enough!

Seth vs zangief was pretty fucked up.

im not gonna say the matchup is any different for dhalsim yun, dhalsim is bottom3 in this game and yun is very strong. but i do feel like there's more to that matchup, ive never seen one drill in place, play obnoxious and slide around teleport around, or yoga mummy a divekick, if you air to air with the headbutt, it juggles into ultra1 or either ex flame. it feels like anyone reasonable, saw how bad and limited dhalsim was, and then quickily moved to juri or guile, or another good character.

As a viper main, Dahlsims were always super easy to just trap in seismos. I felt so bad but fuck Dahlsim players lmao 🤣

I didn’t think t hawk yang was thaaat bad you still get punishes on condor dive with ultra 2 and regular roll kicks. I think yang vs gief was a lot worse though
