The Worst Job In New York: Immigrant America

Subscribe to VICE News here: bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News
Milking cows is a dirty, monotonous job, and as we found out in our latest episode of Immigrant America, it's not a job many unemployed Americans are willing to do. But for some reason the government doesn't give dairy farms a way to recruit foreign workers legally, so most feel forced to hire illegal immigrants. This makes the farms and their workers easy targets for immigration authorities looking to fill deportation quotas. We went to upstate New York to try to understand the cat and mouse game going on between dairy farms and immigration authorities. We found a lot of wasted taxpayer money, racial profiling, and a broken system that unnecessarily treats family farmers and hardworking immigrants like criminals.

They don't want to put the children in detention centers that's why they are separating the children and taking them to housing were children go when both parents get arrested for a crime. They are damned either way , if they don't separate the families they are bad for putting children in detention centers, if they separate the children so they don't have to be in a detention center they are bad. Trump administration did not start this whole thing , enforcing the law yeah ,but they never started it. Its proven Obama's administration deported more illegal immigrants then any other President in American history and most the pictures of the detention centers posted everywhere are from 2014 under the Obama administration. The only difference between Obama's administration and Trumps is that Trump was vocal about it when Obama did it silently.

Also the desperate illegal immigrant that comes strolling in will take a lower wage and no bennefitts and the employers know this and take advantage of it. Well provided the cow dont kick you xD Not to mention that you can get fresh quality milk and cremes before its destroyed by machinery, and you can feed the local cat... seriously, why on earth is this not a popular line of work for unemployed US citizens? Is the pay bad? I am genuinely curious because I think I can find a solution!

@@forbidden1086 Spoken like a true idiot. Why is it that all ppl who speak this ignorance are actually ignorant. Learn to spell then come back. When they had become more strict on "illegals" working these jobs, farmers were left with no workers. So then they offered to increase wages upt to over 15/hr. and americans still wouldn't take the job. If ppl are upset that they take such low wages, be mad at the owners who actually hire and maintain these low wages. Which in turn actually keep America's food cost down. If you don't want hispanics here or working, don't eat, occupy any building or home made by hispanics, etc.

Rational Thinker Yes, and if you are from Europe, it is impossible to get such a visa in Canada. On the other hand, young Canadians here are so lazy, that what farmer told you, is true. Accidentally, my husband works for dairy industry. Nobody wants to work here in BC, Canada, except Philipinos, and East Indians. It is a mystery to me, how can they get work permits and permanent residency, with mostly no English and significant lack of skills. And officially, one can get work permit only in so called skilled position, so people cheat together with their employers. And immigration knows it, governement knows it. But they will not change the rules... That is how great Canada is. For person from Europe it is incredibly hard, we get permits only for 1 year... Ironically, now we sell Canadians milking robots designed and made in Europe, so even the last workers will get out of their jobs... Country abandoned God, and He gave it up to its wicked desires....

I am not for open borders but there needs to be serious immigration reform that keeps bad people out and let people that are actual assets in. Farm workers are among the most valuable immigrants that come here from Mexico and South America. Farmers in Alabama are going out of business due to strong immigration laws and the lack of American's willing to do these jobs or even capable of doing them. It is the usual lack of action in congress to correct these problems and further proof that the Government should be widely privatized to be more productive and accountable. In politics we have to wait and hope to vote incompetent people out, in non Government run business you perform or you get replaced immediately. What a concept !

Remember when they said they have to fill the quotas in the prisons with undocumented workers... Have you heard of private prisons? It is private corps that benefit the most from the cheap labor of undocumented migrants. It is the privatization of major government sectors that has let the intention to make money and fill in in quotas the main mission in institutions that were supposed to benefit the public. Privatization is definitely not the answer.

The only reason we NEED immigrant workers is because most food comes from huge corporations, which as he said makes even family owned farms need to operate like a mill to stay competitive. If we could reverse what's happened with our food sources and stop relying on big corporations to feed us, we could go back to more smaller, local farms producing better goods. The farmers I know that still work in this way enjoy what they do. It's a life style, and they don't require mexican laborers.

They could work and grow to become better educated and have better jobs. This is neither a pro or con, just sharing an experience: I come from a large American city. Many years ago I l moved to a rural area, there are many farms...but nowhere near a boarder. I noticed that there was a large illegal population. I wondered where do they come from? How do they get here? One day when sharing some comments of co-workers with a friend. The friend said to me. If they weren't here, who would pick our vegetables? We have degrees, are you going to take that type of job? Our kids get allowances. They aren't going to do it. Even if they take a summer job they will look for something like a sales associate in a store or fast food at the very least. So again, I ask you, how would the farmers survive? How would we get affordable vegetables to eat? I just looked at my friend, thinking...he's biased cause he's a vegetarian. But later when I gave it more thought, I had no answer. I still have no answer. It's not just dairy, it's farming in general.

Somnivers Certain factors come up as to why they have difficulty learning English: - Some communities do not have adequate facilities for immigrants and recent arrivals to teach them the English language and provide services for them (e.g. job hunting, obtaining driver's licenses, child care support, etc.) - Their lack of or limited amount of documentation could cause them to pay significantly more to be educated at a community college, and with the pressure of feeding their families, they have little to no recourse but to work long hours - Their long work hours mean they do not have adequate time to be with their families or spend time reading books; instead, many keep the unending eat-work-sleep pattern every single day without a day or two to spend quality time with their children and partners And since our Congress has been way too slow, if not ignorant, on the issue of immigration reform, then people need to vote those incompetent politicians out of office in the next election. Those Congress members who are against immigration reform are the same people who continue to subsidize the oil and banking industries for their own wealth accumulation rather than helping out immigrants wanting to live better lives in the country.

Anthony Nachor Agreed, there are multiple factors ,it's a complex problem.But,16 years in US and not able to speak some basic English is just insane.I know immigrants are having a hard time and they work many hours ,I do appreciate those people who work hard jobs. But I just can't imagine living in a country so much time and not speaking some basic language,no language is that hard to learn in 16 years. To me that just shows lack of interest in the respective country's culture.

  • @Somnivers

    @Somnivers

Anthony Nachor A plausible reason for me is that most Americans don't want to do those jobs so Mexicans only interact with each other at work .Their bosses speak Spanish to them so that's that.At home they also speak Spanish ,that's normal.I've seen this before in Spain , where people who worked there for 7-8 years were not able to say anything in Spanish.

So, although skin color doesn't matter to us white guys, it is very definitely important to those with an agenda, and it helps to be able to hate one skin color (white) while bonding as another skin color, say, brown.

Misato Blushing Europe is a conquesting country. Opposite of countries that have been conquested. The long term effects of that still linger in those conquested countries, with corrupt system based on color, class and status still affect the average person. England did not pioneer world wide drug trafficking. Latin America did and in return grew so strong the government is conflicting with them and some meso systems controlled by drug cartels. Then you have American interventions which didn’t happen in Europe because US wanted to focus on neighboring countries such a starting revolutions with in Latin countries and training their military to so they may place other political figures in office that will do what The US wants and so on. Look at Nicaragua, Panama, Mexico “disposable workers” and so on to understand the long term effects of a conquested and Intervened countries and people that also has a serious issue with Gangs and Drugs.....yeah try being a hard worker there... they get overlooked by media but never take their situation for granted thus Latinos have a large handwork ethic distilled within them due to political, societal, economic, historical, and Cultural factors. Especially here in the US

30 years ago nobody thought that china would be an economic power house, you may underestimate mexico and its people but it is becoming an economic power house of its own right, look at how many manufacturing company's are moving there.

Mexico is becoming a western nation, but it doesn't have the ingredients needed for it to become an economic power house, sorry, It's population is too small, and the government is still corrupt, they elected AMLO, but he's a populist who's probably not going to get a lot done. Mexico also is starting to get into service and the tech sectors, so manufacturing might disappear as quickly as it appeared, but you couldn't know for certain.

I am all for immigrant workers. We need a vetting process and of some of these men that have been there for 10-15 years, they should have already been accepted as a citizen. At very least, they should have the paper work in the pending process.

The farmer tries to plead his case by saying it's not fair they take his illegal workers away and that he can't run a business without them. So you mean to tell me if you hired documented Americans for minimum wage your farm would go under? It wouldn't; you would just make less money and that's not okay with you. You're not fooling anyone.

@Michelle BECAUSE IT WAS LESS THEN MINIMUM WAGE. Lmao Hard to take work when someone is always willing to undercut what you need to make a living off of. Just went over your head

Hey dummy, get the fat out of your ears and listen to the video. It clearly states in America for farm work there are only seasonal visas not full year visas which is what most farms need. This was filmed in America, about American policy. How crazy is it that CANADIAN is different, almost like theyre two separate countries.

The legal immigrants and the ones with Visa don't want to work there either. So how is it that they say they are the only ones that do that job?

Americans can do those jobs. We would demand good pay and safe working conditions.
